Hello all, I'm setting out SRP up to stop the little darlings from running exes etc from their home drives. I have searched for an answer to the query I'm about to pose but didn't find an answer. So, my question is: If I implement a 'path' restriction, eg: \\fileserver\%username% - will that restrict everything in that path that's in the 'file types' properties (I assume it does) Can I - for peace of mind - also restrict just one type, and if so, would this work: \\fileserver\\*.exe ?? Can I use this to restrict just .exe's and zip's from that share? Or is that overkill given the file types cover .exe and more? Sorry - probably a v silly question, but one I need reassurance on!

Hmmm, I'm sat by the board now, and there's no Serial number on or by the control unit. I've pulled the board forward away from the wall, and there's a white sticker with an FCC ID on it - is this the sticker with the serial number?? Because of the way the board is attached to the wall (at the top) I get at maximum about a 5cm gap to get my head close to against the wall to look at this sticker. If it's not the FCC ID I need - can anyone 'loan' me one of theirs so I can get the software down, or send me a copy of the software please??

We've got one of these (I can't even find a model number so I don't know what it is) and I need the 'Starboard' software - as someone's managed to lose the original discs... It appears that on the Hitachi website, you need a serial number to be able to upgrade an existing installation, but I can't find anywhere that has the software. Can anyone help? Also, can they tell me how these boards work? There's a panel on the right hand side behind the screen which has the USB connection, with a switch that is currently off. Naturally, when I plug the USB into the machine nothing's recognised, so I guess I have to flick this switch to 'on' to get USB recognition? TIA

I have an AS Rock motherboard on my PC at home. It's 4 years old (yeah ok, so I'm behind with technology, but my Athlon's plenty for home use), not a jotting problem in all those four years. Benchmarked pretty well too, IIRC. Built the father-in-law a PC and picked up another AS Rock, despite his best efforts that too is still going strong...

OK, I'll disclose. Of course I'm planning to leave a handover for my replacement, I started writing it four months ago, it's pretty much the bible of information that the school needs (as nothing's on paper anyway). Yesterday, my NM flew out to India for a week and a half. Needless to say, Wednesday night came - I got: "see ya in a couple of weeks, I'm going on holiday, byeeeeeee" as he ran out of the door. Yesterday morning, I had three separate teachers arrive in my office and say: "H was supposed to do X for me and he promised me that he'd have it done by Friday"... an all too common occurrence, and three things I didn't know that he'd been promising people. Hence my thoughts that at the very least a verbal handover would've been nice, let alone a written one. I wondered if I was asking too much - hence the poll!
-
As I'm from an 'industry' background, I always prepare a handover, written or email. It's just the one thing that I think is important - not keeping colleagues appraised of your work is, IMO, unfair on them. The last thing I would want is someone to be busy and something to land on their desk that they didn't know about or haven't dealt with before (but I had). (and in my situation, that can sometimes happen).
-
Even if not required to leave a handover, I usually drop an email across, informing my NM what's outstanding and who might nag him for something in my absence (eg if I've not managed to get something done). I don't do it because I have to, I do it out of politeness. I guess this brings another question: is it OK to drop everything like a stone and expect your colleagues to pick it up? (specifically relating to holidays here)...
-
Just a quick straw poll from you guys really. When you're going away on holiday, or even when you leave a place, do you provide a handover, and if so - to what extent?

Even eBuyer can help you out here: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/cat/Motherboards-Intel/subcat/Socket-478-Intel-Pentium-4

Bluepoint (http://www.bluepoint.net) who are based in MK - and we use for peripherals - have some on their site. They're due some AS Rock Skt-478 P4I65G boards in shortly, but at £29.65 (+VAT) they're not cheap... Or maybe 29.65 is cheap: I should also add that they do Intel D845GERG2 Socket-478 boards at a whopping £57.95 a pop!

I don't intend to roll it out to student machines for the exact reason contink mentions - abuse by the kids. However, for the minor problems and queries we get from Support Staff, I think I may trial it on some PCs. Certainly, from a "home" perspective, it'll solve the problems that I get with my parents not paying attention to popups, or paying too much attention to them......
-
Anyone seen this?? I'm certainly going to install this one on my parents' machine (for those frustrating weekends of "there's a message that's popped up"), and I am considering installing it on the numpty, sorry, less able users (teachers and support staff) in the school. Too many times I am interrupted with "I've just had a message pop up but I didn't see what it said". This might change that: http://www.panicbutton.org.uk/?page_id=4 The idea - * User sees an error message or something else weird on screen. * All they have to do is click the icon in the system tray. * A popup box asks them to describe the problem * You get sent an email with a screenshot and the description (or it's saved to a network location)

We've got two 3Com Wireless 7760's sat on the side about to be installed into ours. I have absolutely no idea whether they are any good, but they've got to be better than the one Netgear cr@ppy thing that was sat in there before...

In Outlook, under Tools - Options - Mail Format, a user has set their own signature files up and has selected them to be both for replies and new messages. However each day that option resets itself back to 'none', and the user has to go in and manually change it. It's applied to the correct account but I can't see why it keeps resetting itself, unless I'm missing a tickbox somewhere that stops signatures. Any ideas please??

Advice please network manager - technician struggle

You're in a similar situation to me (in fact if I didn't know better I'd say that you'd just described my daily battles!). Bit by bit, I have retrieved the information I need to know. Like Stewart says - get everything down that you can regarding the network, get down everything you know into documents (as there's two of you it lessens the workload). Keep these separate - preferably password-protected - and away from prying eyes. Every time you have to do something, write it down - that's my main way of learning a setup. I don't think you fully know how a network hangs together until you've been in a role for at least a year - there's always little bits that keep appearing to surprise you. I also keep a 'diary' of incidents (such as rudeness to staff, refusal to do certain jobs, etc). I won't do anything with the diary - it's there to back me up if anything blew up (which it won't because I would have to instigate it), but I wonder if it would be worthwhile doing something like that yourself in case of any grievance procedures the NM may try to bring against the school and you two... -
Before you all jump at me and say "The GIMP, The GIMP!", I've already asked my graphics teacher to evaluate The GIMP and give me his opinion. In the meantime, I need to get some prices for Adobe Photoshop. Has anyone bought this recently, and if so, can you recommend a supplier and give me an idea of price? What version did you get? (9? CS2?) I'm hoping to go back with the best price possible, only for the teacher to say "nah, we'll stick with The GIMP". Let's hope!!

Thank you - I know that staff will come to me in a few months' time, asking if I know where they can download the Creative Archive stuff... Am pulling it down bit by bit now... I'll pre-empt such questions

If that happens to me, I promise to donate to Edugeek half of the proceeds of the media money from selling our story. "Madam, was it Divine Intervention do you believe that caused this pregnancy?" "Oh no Sir, my partner is a member on the Edugeek forum..." It's like having one of those pregnancy stones that infertile women rub and are supposed to fall pregnant... do you think clicking 'submit' does the same thing?

I would love to think that I could add value to the learning experience. Certainly, when I'm in a room and a class is going on, I'm happy to help out with the little things that teachers often miss. For example I'd say that it's more useful knowing the ALT-TAB command to flick between screens* than it is to know whether a touch screen monitor is an input/output device, or both. However... I am loathe to get involved because as a techie my job description does not cover that. On top of that, I'm also finding that more and more of my time is being spent tidying up after the little s*ds as they seem set to destroy their own teaching and learning environments by making my job harder. I will only add value to the teaching and learning experience when the teachers learn to add value to the support function. In this instance, value to me is for the teachers to learn to control a class and respond to IT Support so that when we say "please stop your little darlings from ripping the faceplates off the walls" - they heed our requests and do it. So, for me, it'll be a two-way thing - I'll give value if I think teachers are prepared to give value back to me, and at the moment the thing I value the most is my time, energy and money (budgetwise). Until that's valued and appreciated by others, I can't spend the time increasing the learning experience for the students. Simple. *Hmm, but usually seen in practice when the pupils are playing games....

Well, this might be an obvious one, but I had trouble with Google Mail last week - it suddenly stopped showing in anything but 'basic HTML' mode (and would hang on login until I forced it into basic HTML mode). I cleared my cache, and deleted all cookies, and hey presto, everything's fine again.

Ooooh, nice... good way to obtain more donations too :-) My next donation will be on receipt of my first paypacket in new job, but that might be too late for BETT at this rate :-(

I was afraid that you were going to say Dragon....... I've just had a real laugh with the built-in Microsoft speech recognition tool... demonstrated it to a staff member and she was horrified!

I've been asked by a member of my Learning Support Unit whether we have any Voice Recognition software. In short, we don't - but do any of you use it in school? What do you use, and do you recommend it?
