Ah I see, forgot to do a search... Do you know if your users or those from @kennysarmy are using Chrome then or another browser, because it doesn't appear to be OWA either as it DOES open in IE with a double click once you allow pop-ups.

I've been asked by our admin lady why when she double clicks on an email message (using OWA in Chrome) it doesn't expand... I think I've managed to establish that she means it doesn't pop out into a 'new window' with the email in it as it does in IE once you allow pop-ups, which makes me think it's a Chrome issue (but it doesn't even ask). So I thought it was a pop-up block in the settings, but I've just tried it on mine with no restrictions and it doesn't work either. I've tried allowing 'ht tps://outlook.office.com/' in the 'pop-ups and redirects section in Chrome and turning off the protection entirely, but still no joy. I don't think it's a setting in OWA (or at least not that I can see) and I'm going round in circles researching on the internet. I don't use OWA so I'm not sure of its expected behaviour, but the user swears it used to work like that...

Interestingly, as this has piqued my interest again I have sent a message from the 'alias' to my personal account on our other 3rd party email provider and the 'generic' IT Support email account I created (with the same provider). The email to my personal named account came through OK, but the email to the Support email account was classified as junk... It says it was "marked as spam using a junk filter other than the Outlook Junk E-Mail filter", so that means it wasn't anything on my end that put it into the junk folder, but the same filter on the 3rd party provider that is used for my personal account (which let the email through)... EDIT: Anyway I've classified it as 'not junk' in Outlook, and now it is delivered to the inbox, but this doesn't help with external suppliers or support contractors who have email filters that seem to be getting triggered...

I'd forgotten all about this really... I came up with two issues that I couldn't surmount: 1. I can't delete the erroneous 'alias' account within Outlook as it tells me it is the 'Primary' account, I did a bit of internet research but didn't come up with anything (other than deleting all the other accounts first, or completely uninstalling outlook). 2. There is the option of 'send as' but if I choose the 'proper' LGfL account to 'send as' in the dropdown box, the email is undeliverable... "This message could not be sent. Try sending the message again later, or contact your network administrator. You do not have the permission to send the message on behalf of the specified user. Error is [0x80070005-0x0004dc-0x000524]." So what you said about SPF records makes sense, but also not (to me anyway, as I'm no email expert), considering the 'alias' is an alias of an LGfL email account... In any case, I decided to create a different email account with our other 3rd party email provider as part of changing everything to a generic IT Support account (in case I ever leave).

I drink 'a lot' of milk (normally milky coffee - which is pretty much all I drink) and was a little concerned when I overheard this briefly on the news, thinking that they were doing away with dates completely (how do I know how long it has been sitting on the shelf?). But honestly I feel it is a bit of a non-story as I'm not sure what Morrisons are trying to achieve... and a little bit concerned over who this is actually going to impact. I am going to digress a little here (but hopefully not encourage off-topic posts and derail the thread as this is relevant to the subject) as over the weekend I read an article about Veganuary and the fact that animals are being produced for the food chain regardless of whether you are eating meat or not for a month... In it the author referenced milking cows as a relatable example (as in the cows already exist and need to be milked - I know that in a greater more expansive discussion that they exist at all is precisely some people's issue, but that's not the point of this discussion) so I don't want to get into any ethical discussion on the rights or wrongs of the cows being farmed for milk... So, that being said: 10 Cows produce milk and they need to be milked (obviously). 20 Farmer sells milk to Morrisons (at a ludicrously small profit - or not at all sometimes). 30 Morrisons sell milk to consumers (profit for Morrisons). 40 Consumer throws milk away and hopefully recycles the container. 50 GOTO 10 If the consumer doesn't throw the milk away (and therefore goes to buy some more) who benefits exactly?

From my own personal experience I found it vast... but as with most things it was a bit trial and error. We had a teacher's OH who used it in another school, so luckily a lot of the 'Classroom' stuff was dealt with amongst the teachers and SLT. But as usual it comes down to the tech to know everything about everything and get the whole admin part set-up and working (and configured correctly and safely) while at home during the first lockdown! Mostly finding out I hadn't configured a setting because quite frankly I didn't know it even existed... only after reading something on here and going in to check our platform did I realise I should have a particular setting on (or off)! Like realising someone had linked their 'OnlyFans' account (among other things) to their Google Workspace account... Restriciting YouTube, Gmail (if you are using it), who can access what 'app' and who can share what and with whom (and securing Domain only sharing etc.) OUs, Groups... Luckily for me we aren't an all-in Google school and only use it sparingly (mostly for remote learning in the lockdown and for some homework) so I didn't go for the whole having to learn GAM thing thankfully, but it still needs a fair amount of effort to configure and thought on who is using what parts of it and how.

We have a teacher who loves using a big timer up on the board especially for tests etc. They used the one built into SMART on their IWB, then when the Flash thing hit I was asked for alternatives (I didn't put a lot of effort into it though), Google seemed the easiest, so they went with that. Now we've moved onto a newer version of SMART but I think they still use Google. I'm guessing 'non-internet connected' devices (if you have any) would benefit from a standalone timer though?

Not really a Wii-U thing as such but really retro gaming in general... I have tried resurrecting my old C-64, which worked well but as with you, the frustration of waiting for the game to load (tape) and the games/gameplay/graphics on a large modern TV being nowhere near as exciting as I remember (of course this was in my teenage years). I also pulled out my Playstation 1 from the loft and managed to load up Tomb Raider (forgetting how pointy Lara Croft was and how frustrating the jumps were to get the correct angle and do it at the right time)... my other favourite was Tekken but honestly the graphics just look so blocky and glitchy now (even the change in quality to Tekken 2 was remarkable). Then there is the Wii, but pointing the controller at the screen seems really a skill to learn in itself... plus I don't think I really have any of the games that I would really want to invest time in playing or money buying extra equipment for (really a first person shooter kind of guy - so something like Counterstrike with a gun type Wii controller)... Instead I have got Just Dance and Wii Sports/Fit which is basically what it came with. I guess some of these things are the appeal of retro gaming, but I don't really get any time to game full stop, let alone faff about with waiting for things to load and relearning all the quirks...

How are they opening the files? Are they browsing a shared drive and clicking on a filename in an explorer window or are they navigating to it/opening it from within the application itself whilst open? When this happens do they have the same problem if they try to open a local file on their computer?

Well, I've sent the email and had a surprisingly positive response from SLT... How it goes in practise will be another thing I'm sure! Just have to decide if Sophos can do everything I need or whether to start mucking about with GPOs and then testing everything that can be plugged in... and if I should actually allow read access (but then need a whole other set of things to deny nasties) for the Theatre Troupe that turns up with all their music on USB or the Youth Group the Family Workers have arranged with their PowerPoint presentation on a USB or....

Thanks, this is what I was getting at... If 'read' is allowed then there needs to be some sort of mechanism to ensure what is being read isn't potentially dangerous such as a script or program (and also a way to block the execution of files such as virus/malware)? Also, an SD card is just as able to have a dodgy file on it as a USB stick (I have used them as such in certain situations). Unfortunately the 'quick fix' of moving OU and rebooting/gpupdate won't be workable if I'm not on site or not contactable?

I have tried to have this discussion with SLT a few times, but failed to really gather any support. With a few quotes from this thread I am going to make another effort, but can already see a few issues. What do you do with visitors, external educators, music/choir teachers, trainers etc. These all seem to have their documents/presentations on a USB stick... I'm sure some of you say tough luck to them, but that isn't going to help me sell this. It won't work in the real world scenario of being called to the hall in front of a whole assembly full of children and teachers to be faced with a visitor who nobody knew needed a USB to do the presentation (yes I know they could have emailed it or something, but I can practically guarantee that won't happen). Also, how is it best to do this GPO or Anti-Virus (we use Sophos), for if it needs to be reversed on individual machines on the fly. Which devices need to be allowed and how is it done, iPads, cameras, smartboards, visualisers, phones etc. Is any method granular enough to know which is which? It seems to me there are a few versions of this issue and I'm not sure what I'm trying to achieve in each scenario: Writing to USB - this is to stop resources (and potentially sensitive data) being saved to USB storage. Reading from USB - this is to stop resources being brought in on USB storage Executing from USB - potential virus/malware route. Then I would need to look into blocking all other forms of cloud storage (to stop personal accounts on Dropbox etc.) except those used by the school (Google Drive).

Actually I have to admit I didn't wait... it took 10 seconds for the page to refresh with all the downloads, but... ... when it did it only had the very bare minimum of what we are 'licensed' for, doesn't appear to be any 'extras' in there at all (all Desktop/Server OS, SQL and Office downloads). By contrast the old log-in has all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff available to download...

Yeah good shout, it doesn't happen here so I'm just shooting in the dark. Just tried it with one of ours and it seems they don't get shared drives, desktop wallpaper and a few other things but they can obviously get around a lot of things that are usually locked down with GPOs - luckily internet access is still filtered as that's at an ISP level. I'd go with the file check script then (and cable ties) and a word to the teachers/SLT.

100% agree it is a classroom management issue but... Along with this wasn't there some sort of script that could check for a network connection and shut down the machine if it didn't detect one? Also good old cable ties (not sure on your machines but ours have a airflow grille at the back that allows me to loop one round the cable and then put the ends into the machine to secure tightly)!

I had the same problem with recently renewing and viewing with an account that just has the new agreement (long story short - had to create a new account and have it linked due to changing reseller and them not really understanding it should just be continuous)... nothing in that list in the link (admin centre). Log-in with the previous account and there is a full list of goodies (possibly from old agreements?)! Also, is there HEIC as well as HEVC, I seem to remember they had to be done separately?

Any Outlook gurus out there...? Long story short, I have a 'personal' LGfL email account ([email protected] - which is a bit of a mouthful) to which I added a shorter alias ([email protected] - we own domain.org.uk) through the LGfL admin settings on their support site. This alias now seems to be detected a spam (a couple of suppliers and support companies haven't received recent emails and found them in the spam folder). Unfortunately a long time ago (I can't remember exactly), when I set up Outlook on my PC I think I chose the 'alias' as the account name and it sends mail as this (but obviously all mail goes through the LGfL account). So, two questions really as I'm not an Outlook expert: 1. Is there anyway to stop my 'alias' being classified as spam by external mail servers..? or 2. Can I somehow change the way Outlook has set-up the account with the alias to actually use the LGfL mail account without deleting the account and mail..? or 3. If I just delete the account in Outlook, am I right in thinking that if I add in the LGfL account and also get it to open the 'alias' account mailbox I will still receive all the mail for both, but not be able to send as the 'alias'. I'm a bit confused because Outlook seems to know it is just an alias, looking at the .OST it is actually named with the LGfL account (so I can't add the LGfL account in seperately because it already exists).

Ah I see.... Yes, I think I am going to be one of those that will be disappointed! I was hoping they were just going to fix 'it' (whatever 'it' is).... What I can't actually get my head around (and what annoys me the most out of all of it), is that I can't seem to find anywhere that MS publicly acknowledges that they have actually broken printing.... and how they have broken it. I mean I guess it makes sense that they don't want everyone to know the actual detail of what they've coded to prevent the exploits, but ever since the 'Print Nightmare' whatever they've tried to fix just breaks something else. If they say well we have made it admin only to deploy printers, then ok we know the simple reg hack for that... if they say we've raised the security priv level, then ok we know the simple reg hack for that, etc... But for the last couple of updates (Nov and now it appears Dec), none of that even seems to work for us and I can't find out what they've done to even find a workaround that doesn't include rolling back dlls or 'feature overrides'...
