Hmmm...from what I can see that seems to be a setting on the DHCP scope on a Windows server running that role? We don't have DHCP run by the Windows server, it is run on the CISCO switches. Access is limited but I have picked up a thing or two over the years so it might be possible to at least change a variable in a line of code, plus I can ask the company who support it if I really need to (if anyone can tell me this is definitely what's happening) although they are on a break/fix support contract an any config changes are chargeable. Not sure I want to dump managing DHCP into my lap just yet as well as everything else, it has actually worked fine this way for over 10 years and factory resetting the core switch I think would come with a whole heap of trouble as my knowledge certainly isn't up to recreating the whole network from scratch (VLANs, ACLs, I.P. reservations etc.).

Ok, so I'm going to ask some really basic questions in this post (possibly more so than usual), but please bear with me as I haven't even had to look at this in over 10 years.... I inherited a strange hybrid DNS/DHCP set-up and now I'm looking to move servers onto Hyper-V, I need to look at the DNS. I'm researching how to move DNS so I can get it done over the summer, but I'm a bit stuck on the DHCP part. DNS is done through the servers (which I can try to deal with), but DHCP is done through the CISCO switches (which I have limited access to)... I'm just thinking that the DHCP will carry on as usual through the switches no problem, but how are DNS servers advertised/updated? I was somehow under the impression that this was done through DHCP (as it is in the same section as - I.P. address/subnet mask/default gateway)... and if that is correct, how do I get the 'new' DNS servers out to all the clients? As this is a first time thing for me, I am looking to make it as simple as possible. I haven't had to look at 'how' these things work as I either enter all the details manually for a static, or set to 'obtain automatically' and it all gets magically filled in...

Has anybody ever found a way to do this without doing it manually or completely wiping the iPad? We use Meraki, but I can't see any other option...

Just wondering if there is any quick and simple way to do this as an admin...? Students will not need to carry any of their work forward into next year (small Junior School), so while it isn't a major problem it's pointless to leave it sitting there.

I have recently migrated my WSUS to a VM and this time round made some changes. I cleaned up our WSUS and chose to have updates delivered by WU instead of hosting the update files locally. I installed the WSUS role on the Hyper-V machine and set it to be a downstream server of our main WSUS and let it sync overnight (not sure how long it took but it was irrelevant), then changed it after the sync to be a main WSUS server. Changed the GPOs (we use item level targeting) to point to the new WSUS and am just waiting for the last few computers to register before removing the old WSUS instance (though not really necessary). This means there is minimal impact to the server in terms of storage and as I will be releasing updates manually (no auto-approval due to the last few messed up CUs) I can release to certain OUs to ensure the network isn't swamped (small school so I doubt that would happen anyway). As far as I can tell now, the only benefit WUfB has, is being able to deliver updates outside of the school network (which although tempting isn't really an issue) and although it has been mentioned elsewhere about WUfB being able to detect driver issues once fully paired with creating an Azure and using Update Compliance etc. I wasn't really up for doing all that just to go WUfB but I felt I need more control than just a few GPOs to manage it so I remained with WSUS.

We do... and we did... but there would be no point ripping it all out now and buying something else, as it seems that it's not because of a Huawei type 'security' concern, or even a no 'profit for X regime' as such (broadly speaking*), then it's 'just' a moral question...? Because it's not so much just about it being 'Chinese' though is it? It's 2 companies so far (due to being allegedly complicit somehow in crimes by the state against a ethnic group of their population), but how far will that go...? Are we banning ALL products manufactured in China, are we banning ALL products manufactured in Russia...? Or just those that are deemed to benefit a particular regime? *Because if it is... as others have said, what does that mean for practically all other tech produced in any small part in China (not entirely sure on the % of equipment).

I know, I know, but I have to wonder what Xi would want with thousands of hours of video of Year 3 running around the playground...

So, not like the Huawei/Chinese Govt. is 'using this technology to spy on us and has possibly loaded something in the firmware to execute on a given day and take over all our systems' type thing then...

Our SIMS person has just emailed to say they are getting an error whilst importing new users for next year. "The URN XXXXXX in the CTF is different from the one on the Other School details - XXXXXX" Checking on the .Gov site it would appear the 'Other School Details' number is from when it was an Infant School (closed) and the new number is an Academy (must have changed since last year). How do I get SIMS to accept it is the 'same' school and update the details to allow the CTF to import (hopefully without breaking anything or destroying any historic data), or do I have to create another one?

Can't help much but a couple of weeks ago our FSRM alerted that a pupil had tried to save 'Wave Browser.exe' to their user area... I Googled it and saw the first few hits were malware related, so emailed the teacher (same as you the alert was a bit late so couldn't catch them on the machine to look through recent history). But I emailed the teacher anyway to have a word and basically remind them 'Big Brother is watching you'... The pupil in question denied everything of course... I guess I should have looked through the filtering logs to see if I could find out where it came from, but FSRM did its job and it hasn't happened before or since so I let it go. Maybe it's the latest 'thing' for the kids and they're sharing it around as a way to 'Hack the System'?

I'd just started noticing this being pushed as a channel in Prime (I think) and thought I might be tempted for Halo and Strange New Worlds, so good timing... Do they have the latest season of Discovery...?

Thanks, only 2 issues... It seems to actually open the share in a finder window as well as showing a shortcut on the desktop, not really a deal breaker (I think), but a bit annoying. I have no idea what this means, but it seems to do OK without it. It might be a permissions issue on the share as there is one Staff share (open to everyone) that reappears no matter what even when not in 'Login Items', the other two (Admin and SLT) seem to need it as they have stricter permissions... Also I may have worked around it anyway as when I connected I dragged the shortcut to the dock instead (I also put them in Login Items' just in case, but ticked 'Hidden').

Hi yes thanks, that part is ok as it then seems to put a 'shortcut' to the share on the desktop. However if you then reboot the Mac it doesn't reconnect and the 'shortcut' has disappeared.

The Headteacher has a Mac...

Did a similar thing by removing it from 'Start-Up' items and then just a shortcut on the desktop if I ever need it (which I always do as mine doesn't seem to show the video feeds without it). EDIT: Which I thought I had replied earlier... but I can't see my post, so I guess I only thought about it and then went off to do something else...

Can you not block all and then make exceptions for Computing?

Yeah, I agree in principal, but in practise I have to do what I can. I've seen the GPOs for WUfB, but how do you manage it all (see who has installed what update, approve/remove etc.)? I've seen 'Update Compliance' but: Update Compliance is a Windows service hosted in Azure

Made some space on the server last night to accommodate the VMs, shrunk one volume and without thinking decided I would tidy up and give the old volume a new Drive letter. Ignored the 'programs won't work if they rely on the drive letter' warning, as nothing uses it by drive letter anyway (or so I thought).... Difficult to say really (probably why you haven't got many replies)... and with no budget to work with... As it appears you had a good relationship, if it was to be something personal only you know them best. If it was to be something generic, think about what you'd like to receive? Small things: Some sort of official looking School Headed mock certificate detailing accomplishments, even made up ones like 'making the best cup of coffee', 'not losing your temper at the 100 password resets in a week' etc. Of course something humorous like a signed photo of their colleagues that they can look back on with fond memories... or their workstation/office/server room for when they miss it (unlikely but you never know). I am notoriously difficult to buy for (ask my OH), but the usual 'Official Computer Whizz' coffee mug and '1960s style laptop' (a notebook and pen), plus some other bizarre things have been 'Secret Santa' presents... I stopped partaking after the 'floating boobs' bath plug incident... Actually something personal, useful and memorable...? Personalised coffee mug or something similar?

Might be worth ringing around a few install companies and asking what they use, or ask a few friendly companies on here to ask their installers. Sounds like a bit of a unique piece of kit so will be £££'s and the thing is if installing them is part of their core business they will pay those £££s for the kit (and will not tell you, just ask if they can quote for the job)!

Yeah you'd need a strap or something all the way round, but you're right 80Kg would be pushing the limit on most. Are these actually smart boards at that weight, or are they Interactive TV installs? Do you do a lot of them? If so it is probably worth the cost of the other lifters.

Yeah, but the thing is they don't... because, well... teachers! It probably goes like this (for the teachers that actually do shut down every night, the others just go straight to 30), 10 Just about to leave, go to shutdown... 20 uh-oh... 'Install Updates and shutdown' that could take a while... 30 I'll just close the lid and ignore it... 40 goto 10 Then after a week of doing this, it restarts in the middle of training/meeting/Zoom call with parents... and I get the blame. It just doesn't seem that they can make the connection, like they should just be able to ignore it forever!
