Local profiles. It displays the message for all new users but not the next time they login. Its one of those problems that whilst it's not that vital I've spent all day fiddling around with it!

This is driving me crazy! Some but not all of our latest computers and laptops are displaying the really annoying 'a program on your computer has corrupted the default search provider it's been reset to Bing' or words to that effect. I've exported reg files for search scopes both in Current user and local user from machines that don't have the problem, this has worked in the past but not this time. I have GPOs set for don't display search bar and prevent users from changing search providers, I've enabled and disabled these to no avail. Anyone got a solution to this?

Been asked to investigate Espresso, is anyone using it successfully in a junior school (7 - 11). I understand it's not cheap, prices not advertised on their website, so we are wondering if it's worth the outlay. Pm me if you prefer.

Thanks will do when I'm back in on Monday.

Where's the best place to source replacement laptop batteries? Ones I don't have to worry that they'll spontaneously burst into flames?

I've got it to work, only use windows 7 32bit though. Go through the install let it tell you the program isn't compatible, when the compatilibilty utility starts then choose xp sp2 as the os that the program works with.

We keep having random internet prolems within school, either none at all or very slow page loading. Our internet is provided by the LEA via a point to point system on our roof, apparently fibre was too expensive so the LEA have set up a complicated mix of fibre to some schools then point to point to nearby schools. Admin and curriculum are seperate with the only common ground being the switches and the point to point 'gubbins'. So I've ruled out my new server and dns problems, but the LEA are convinced it's our network, maybe a loop. I've experienced a network loop before and it threw the entire network, couldn't access the server shares and the lights on the switches were going crazy. Is there anyway I can check the network with some free software and does anyone have any other ideas as to what might be causing the internet problems.

Got myself a bit confused with this! The head wants me to put weekly homework on the school website, some of which will just be in pdf format for the pupils to read and use their homework books to complete the work. She would also like the option of word/openoffice docs to be completed at home and emailed back to school. This is all quite straightforward but I'm trying to think of an easier way than emailing work back to school. Although I'm not sure how other schools do online homework. We also have a moodle site that I set up to satisfy the VLE requirements. It's hosted externally and as yet there are no logons. How do you use moodle for homework? If I hosted the site on a spare server within school would that give me the facility for pupils to save work without the need to email it back to themselves at school?

I change my insurance company almost every year and have never been asked for my driving licence (neither have my sons). The DVLA have all the details required including, I would imagine, any points etc. Have you had a change of address recently? Or moved around alot? I would contact the insurance company direct and ask them the reason, might be a request from the broker only.

[windows software] XP downgrade discs on Win7 machines
chrbb replied to SimpleSi's topic in Licensing Questions
Sounds as though you have roaming profiles then or mandatory with redirected My Documents ! To check if they are mandatory - locate the profiles on the server to see if they NTUSER.dat or NTUSER.man files. Then do a search on Edugeek for setting up W7 profiles, there should be lots of threads! My printers are setup with logon scripts, make sure you have windows 7 drivers on the server for the printers, I did find that I had to authorise the printer driver at the very first logon as administrator, after that no problems -
[windows software] XP downgrade discs on Win7 machines
chrbb replied to SimpleSi's topic in Licensing Questions
I had windows 7 running on server 2003 without any problems, I took the plunge with W7 by starting off with a couple of staff laptops, we now have half the suite XP and half with W7, the children are very adaptable. (Junior school btw) Give us some info on your setup and p'haps we can help with makig W7 useable within your network. -
Has anyone set this up and using it in a primary school environment?

Recommission used laptop for another member of staff
chrbb replied to chrbb's topic in How do you do....it?
I think I'm just being neurotic after a stressful day! It should only be school stuff on the laptops and if a member of staff was determined to recover the previous owners data they'd do no matter what I do to the hard drive, except if I physically destroyed it. The deleted profile will be written over in time by the new owners data eventually, I think! I don't use imaging, I'm in a primary school with not an emormous amount of computers, we buy equipment with oem windows then I have a script that installs most of my software, so actually doesn't take much time to set up new equipment at all. -
Recommission used laptop for another member of staff
chrbb replied to chrbb's topic in How do you do....it?
I don't have imaging software so I suppose it would be a case of formating the drive and reinstalling windows and software. I've wondered if something like cc cleaner to write over the free space would suffice. I don't think for one moment that staff would be able to recover deleted profiles of other users some struggle to logon, but it's just for my peice of mind. -
What do you all do when you change ownership of a staff laptop? We have a steady stream of pregnant staff leaving and then returning, I don't reimage laptops just take off ex teacher's documents, store them on an external hard drive, delprof their profile, copy returning member of staff's documents to laptop and issue. But today I had to use recuva to retrieve a users favourites folder from their newly deleted profile and all their documents were recoverable. I'm now wondering if I should be more diligent in deleting data from laptops that other staff are taking over.

This driving me mad............. I've downloaded and extracted the msi for Google Earth v6, done the language transform, installed - all good until a new user attempts to use the program. A box pops up to advise that Google Earth could not write to the current cache or myplaces file location. I've set this version up and installed it in exactly the same way as the previous version, which didn't display the same error. Is it possible to change the location of the cache using Orca?

I got round this by disabling the 'found new hardware alert'. Having said that the board is only interactive when it feels like it. It's a ten year old board with a serial connection that's then got a 10 yard run of cable to the computer, I just put it down to it's age and signal degredation.

Yeah mine are Win 7 32 bit.

It does work in Win 7, it's a faff but it will work. Start the install as normal it will then tell you it's not compatible and run the compatibilty troubleshooter, select XP and needs administrator rights. I haven't installed it for a while but I seem to remember it takes two attempts at this point! It will then install and work as normal.

When we were looking for first cars for our sons, we didn't go for standard small, starter cars, we looked at something a bit more substanstial. No 1 had a megane scenic, no 2 an astra. Both cars had double air bags and enough oomp to pull away from a junction safely!
