If you configure switches correctly this won’t happen. This is the prime reason you should never use the native VLAN ( default VLAN 1). It’s surprising how many people do this. I have seen accidentally VLAN hopping when someone placed a DHCP server in the native VLAN. It dished out IP addresses to all other VLANS. That was fun! Dynamic ARP Inspection is quite good for ARP attacks. If there is anything other that the IP and MAC the device should have it will shutdown the port. You should be careful with this as some software (such as LanSchool) spoof the MAC address of devices.

By default Cisco (and I think every other vendor) allows unrestricted communication between Layer 3 VLANS. 9 / 10 times this is what people desire. To stop this you can do 2 things 1. Place an Access Control List on the VLAN to prevent access to anything that has a private IPv4 address. You can add exceptions for things like DHCP & DNS. I use public DNS on guest networks so you don’t reveal IP addresses of internal devices. This assumes that you’re not using public IP addresses on internal devices. 2. Use a layer 2 VLAN and terminate this straight onto your firewall. The traffic isn’t routed at all on the switch. You can also do some access restrictions on some WIFI systems. This is a little hit and miss.

Can you expand on this please? On a network setup properly you cannot just hop between a guest and main production VLAN.

To have assets of that value generally means you have large quantities of cash. If all else fails they can fall back on IAG. They will bail them out.

They do this in Australia and we can get 100meg + on a pair of copper (providing DSL is retired on the cabinet). Something I have noted. In Australia if you want an old school phone line you use VOIP connected via the router. In the UK you can still connect a PSTN phone via the wall jack.

Why is the UK FTTC slow compared to Australia? Is in the connection between the exchange and cabinet or between the cabinet and the premises?

Hello, Our network is predominantly laptops and its a 24x7 operation. As a result there really isn't a way to enforce a shutdown without causing user problems. Is there some software to remind users to reboot / shutdown if they haven't done within a specified time period please? Will help getting fully compliant with things like Windows Updates. Thanks

I’m confused as to what the expenses was? What did you need to pay for if you had been provided drives? Just out of curiosity, did you keep the SAN and drives firmware up to date?

I’m pretty sure there is an option to turn off this power saving sleep. We had this (quite some years ago) and it drove the users crazy.

Does the MAC address randomise multiple times on the same SSID? Or does the same Mac Address stay static on a particular SSID? The Apple website says it’s per network. But that could be subnet rather than SSID?

I wondered that. Since Office 2007 - out of the box XLS is the default. 2 things come to mind. 1. Their computer system is set to save as XLS as default instead of XLSX. This was common when Office 2003 and below was still on production. Maybe it was never switched back or they still have Office 2003 and below in service? 2. They copied and pasted an old template and adapted it.

Surely they should have backups of the original data and they could then import it again?

It does seem a lot got 1 host. Is the host still in warranty? If not I would look at a replacement solution.
