Are you using standard roaming profiles or mandatory or domain default? If it's a mandatory profile are the permissions set correctly on the share/files and user hive?

My experience of hosted SIMS was many years ago, so may have changed dramatically. But I found the performance to be much slower than an onsite installation. I seem to remember there was a site-to-site VPN in place to provide connectivity - users used the locally installed SIMS.net client. Have you considered site-to-site connectivity for your primaries and hosting SIMS on a single virtual SQL box? (Not sure if this is a supported configuration, but I don't see why not as it's how a lot of LEAs do it...)

Can you plug a keyboard, mouse and monitor into your smoothwall box? Not sure if the appliances have this as I've always run it on HP tin or VM. If so - then you'll be able to see if it can ping other devices - it may be that it's got upset and lost some of its config.

Ok - in that case it's probably worth upgrading to EFSW (or whatever it's called!) - I've read that it's a lot better behaved on Windows Servers, specifically it should automatically exclude certain system files based on the roles that the server has.

Hmm... fair enough - thought it was worth checking! Are you running NOD32 or is it the newer ESET File Security for Microsoft Windows Server? I think the latter is supposed to be friendlier.

How's ESET configured? Is it set to scan inside ZIP/archive files? I've sometimes seen fileservers take a big performance hit because of this.

Are all computers on the same switch? If not - do you have spanning-tree enabled?

That's comparing Apples with oranges (pun intended). Macs can make a lot of sense in a business environment, assuming the higher initial capital investment isn't off-putting. If you just have the requirement for portable devices with good battery life and a very small software footprint (maybe Office and a few other apps) - then Mac management is pretty straightforward and yes, I can believe that the TCO in these circumstances is probably pretty good. Blah blah blah, school environment, blah blah blah, SIMS, blah blah blah, weird and wonderful software. etc.

I've used Survey Monkey and SharePoint for this before. Both worked well. Paid version of Survey Monkey is better for stats.

Absolutely. The cheapest option is perceived as being of lesser quality... thus the compromise of the middle choice. In reality though - the products are probably very similar bar the profit margin!

I find this sort of psychology fascinating - it's similar to the way that you'll often find some items on restaurant menus that are far more pricey than all of the others... people then think that the middle priced meal (or bottle of wine, etc.) is good value. It's all relative.

What was the last release before 9.6.2.0? You probably need to downgrade sequentially I think! They're a bit picky about how they downgrade. Also - make sure that you've got a backup of your config - or at least have it really well documented. I've seen them revert to factory settings after a downgrade.
