If Microsoft still recommend Office x86 why bother with x64? Surely this must have changed now? I thought they were gearing everything up toward x64? I haven't seen or can find anything from SIMS.net about the support for Office 2013. You'd hope that by the summer they would have support... ?

Could anyone tell me when Office 2013 x64 may be supported? I am planning a summer roll out of Windows 7 x64 with Office 2013 x64. Or would I be better off with Office 2013 32 bit?

Decision time - any V3700 users care to comment before I buy the Dell?

I just thought the servers have a way of detecting drive types and if it detects it is a SSD and doesnt have a specific firmware version or something the server is looking for it won't initialize the drive. Similar to putting a SSD into any form of SAN from Dell / HP / IBM? Or have I made that up in my sleep?

Has anyone purchased the V3700 yet from IBM? If so i'd be interested to know what your thoughts on it are and how it compares to what you had previously. I am currently at the point of having to decide between the IBM V3700 and the Dell MD3620. Neither will be a bad decision I am sure but am having trouble justifying one over another.

Bump! I have scoured the internet all night yesterday trying to find an answer if it will work in a dell R720 or IBM x3650 M4. Don't suppose anyone has bought some of these Intel DC S3700 SSD's? If so what have you tried them in?

You'd think so wouldn't you....? But I've searched and searched and cannot find anything online to say they'd work in a R720 or IBM x3650 m4 for example.

IBM or Dell? I have a project coming up for a VMware implementation which will have 3 hosts direct attached to a SAN via 8GB fibre. Question is: I have been given pricing for a like for like comparison between IBM and Dell. The pricing includes: 3 hosts (IBM x3650 M4 or Dell R720) each with: 192GB RAM, 2 six core processors, 2 HBA etc. IBM V3700 with expansion shelf with 48 x 600GB 10k SAS OR Dell MD3620 with same capacity of disks Putting price completely aside for now, which of the two solutions would people suggest I invest in? Anybody with experience of both SAN's? If not anyone got any experience with one or the other - good or bad? My thought is with them being like for like there probably isn't anything between them. There is no direct comparison online - storage reviews seem to be few and far between. The kit will house the usual school infrastructure from: SIMS, exchange, SQL, file, SCCM, share point, app-v etc. For a school that has 1400 on roll and 1100 devices. Thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Well it may be very expensive if we wanted to implement another Cisco solution onsite as we are being advised that the licenses we purchased originally with the phones are not transferable to the school... So any supplier is trying to quote for a solution including all the necessary licenses to run 130 extensions! We have had quotes from £8k to £18k with or without licenses!

Do I understand with the asterisk solution that we could continue to use our existing Cisco phones? Are you dealing with a UK based company for asterisk? Also why the decision to go with asterisk? Just curious to know whether you think its the best solution out there for integrating the existing Cisco handsets.

Hi all, I am after some suggestions to help me move forward with the schools VoIP solution. The current situation is the school as a Cisco VoIP solution put in my a managed ICT service provider years ago. The contract with the managed ICT provider ends this year. When that contract ends the school will lose connectivity to the call manager solution hosted off site. At this point the 130 extensions (Cisco 7911's) will cease to work. Onsite other than the phones is a Cisco 2851 voice gateway, an ISDN2 connection and a decent internet connection for possibly routing calls over SIP? Can I ask what people would do if in a similar position? Would you look at putting back onsite a call manager express solution or a business edition 6000 by cisco? Or would you look at converting the handsets to SIP handsets and going down the open source route? The school will just want to make sure that which ever provision they go with it is a robust and reliable solution. The only fear with the open source route is the lack of support and the fear of loosing phone connectivity if something were to go wrong with no backup. I'd be really interested to see what people suggest, thank you.

I am in exactly the same boat, however I don't see it initially as a problem. I am planning on putting in 3 hosts of more than adequate spec. I really cannot see the need for a 4th host in the future - usually the only reason to add an additional host is if the first 3 are not able to be upgraded (RAM limit reached for example). A typical secondary environment needs no more than 3 hosts with say 128GB RAM per host. Dell, HP, IBM hosts these days all support way in excess of 128GB of RAM. If the hosts have 2 quad or six core processors they will be more than sufficient for a typical environment. Upshot - I wouldn't worry about it if you buy the right hosts to begin with.

Problem is the 15" retina version is well over £1000.

Hi All, I am after a decent laptop that I can use as my workstation. Ideally it would be dockable to save me time plugging cables in every time etc. It will need to be up to the job of running VMware workstation so I can work on a couple of virtual machines at a time. Therefore it could do with at least 8GB RAM and a decent enough CPU (i5 or i7). What ever I get I would look at adding a SSD and replacing the HDD that comes with it if not already a SSD. Weight and size - doesn't really matter, I am not adverse to a larger screen and therefore a heavier laptop. Win 7/8 - I'll install windows 7 x64 onto what ever I get. Touchscreen - not bothered to be honest. Budget wise upto £1000. Any good suggestions as to what you suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks dhicks for the suggestion. I hadn't thought about esata connection, I did want to make it a little less home made though. I didn't want to cobble something together as its going to be connected to DPM - not the only backup but it'll need to be robust and reliable. Having put some more thought into your answer I could get a smaller 5 or 6 bay device from QNAP or Synology and connect it via the external esata connection.

Hi all, I'm thinking of using something like the 8 bay Synology DS1812 to connect directly via gig nic to my DPM server via iSCSI to give my DPM server more space. Seems a cheaper alternative than something like a direct attached storage from someone like HP or Dell. Does anyone have any experience of doing something similar? If so has it worked out OK? Or are there any caveats to this kind of setup that I hadn't thought about? Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated.

Shame about Jessops! I got serveral items from them including my D800 and 70-200VR2. With quidco discount made them the cheapest around at the time. Sad to see them go, will be keeping an eye on the website to see if there will be anything worth having in the clearance, doubtful though - never is.
