I assume I am. The serial cable came with a Cisco SG300-52 switch but I assume it would work. Is there anyway to tell the difference between the two types? The connectors on both ends of the cable are female.

Tried pressing Enter as I've read that could help but it doesnt. Also tried the 19200 baud speed, it wants 9800 though. Rebooting doesn't help either. I've tried Hyperterminal, LogmeTT and SecureCRT

We've got a Managed switch which is currently acting as just a switch but 1 of the 2 uplink ports is mated to an SFP port that isn't in use so I need to change it back to the copper port as currently it does work but only at 100Mbps, instead of 1000Mbps. The Switch is an Allied Telesyn AT-8350GB the manual says its also got a web interface but without knowing the IP address I've no way of logging into that. We got the switch second hand and I assume it was never restored to factory defaults. So my question is how can I log into the switch to configure it? I've tried via serial using various telnet programs and using the settings from the manual. But the programs just appear to connect but I don't get any login screen, just a flashing "I" bar. We also have an AT-8326GB with the same problem.

We have just bought 32 handsets and 4 slates I've setup 2 of the slates on a pc to test them out. However do I need to register all 4 slates on all 9 of our boards? This will be very time consuming if I have to! Even more so with the handsets! Are the lecturers on their limited accounts able to use the wireless dongle and register devices?

I use a combination of Smoothwall (we are a small organisation but its worth it) and OpenDNS. The two work well together and so far have not conflicted. The only OpenDNS options I've got on are Porn filter and Proxy filter. Smoothwall takes care of the rest of the categories as its much more flexible.

I think slow logons are the bain of IT technicians around the world. When the system was first introduced were the logons fast? Try taking a PC out of the domain and then putting it back in. That usually works for me for a while. Also take a look at the Event Logs of said PC's and Server see if there are any problems logged at the same time.

What If I shrink the FAT32 (X: ) partition and make an NTFS partition in the space called (Z: ) then copy the contents of (X: ) to (Z: ) and then delete (X: ) and put the space into (Z: ) if you follow lol... I dont have the time to start again with the server even with the backups I've got. Its all the settings that I dont have backups for, hence wanting to use WSB. I have a NAS drive that I use for backups.

I think I'm going to have to do some testing before I dive in. I'll setup Win2k8 on a spare desktop and see whats what. Cheers for the help! EDIT Yeah I'll try and get you a screen shot.

The server is installed on NTFS. The boot partition is FAT32 at least I think its the boot partition its 2GB. A Google reveals lots of other people who have the same problem. The problem is when I installed it I installed it like any other OS I've installed a million times before so how do I know its not going to create this FAT32 partition again?

Its odd. The actual OS I think is NTFS (C:) but this is a hidden partition that says (OS) and I think it contains the startup files To think about formatting it I had to assign it a drive letter. The server is a Dell T410 and the OS was downloaded from Microsofts website via my IT supplier. I only found out about the partition when I came to use Windows Server Backup and it listed the partition. It won't let me do a bare metal recovery as it doesnt support FAT32. If the partition does only include startup files, does the cluster size matter? The (OS) parition contains the following files. Boot (Folder with language folders and the file bootmgr.exe.mui in each folder) Recycle Bin Bootmgr - system file BOOTSECT.BAK I'm actually not sure, I think its software (onboard controller) Device manager says: Dell VIRTUAL DISK SCSI Disk Device

I think we are talking about the same tool from cmd prompt... "CONVERT X: /FS:NTFS" The server is in RAID1, how would it affect the raid?

Has anyone used Convert.exe to convert a FAT32 parition to NTFS? I will be doing so next Monday and I just want to know if anyone has had any problems using it. I need to format the OS partition on my Windows Server 2008 R2 to NTFS in order to use Windows Server Backup. I've made a backup of the partition but just I was wondering if there was anything else to expect. The server is in production but we'll have some downtime during the day so I need to sieze the moment. Cheers.

Great thread! Just thought I'd throw my two pence worth in. I've got a Cisco SG-300 as my main and only switch (small operation) and its fantastic. Highly configurable for a "budget switch" However in this instance I wouldn't recommend it as a core switch. For that you need something with a bit more of a punch like a Cisco 2900, 3500 or 3700 series something that is 10gig compatable for the future if not now. A stacked switch array will work out quite well for you. Its always better to get quality over quantity.

You can get filtering on Draytek routers. OpenDNS is also good and I would assume free for charities. Although I can't find any info on their site to back that up.

I'm trying to use WSB for the first time and when I try to do a full backup (server data, applications, system state) it says "One of the specified source volumes has an invalid format and cannot be protected using Windows Server Backup. Only volumes formatted with NTFS can be protected" There are 2 volumes in storage manager. (OS) (fat32) (C:\) NTFS I get the same error even if I don't select the OS

I've distributed this to all our PC's and it seems pretty stable. Is the computer going through a proxy/firewall?
