There is no such thing as the perfect image. It's starts with a great image.. then becomes an image with something a teacher hasn't informed you that they needed.. then theres software updates.. then it's out of date. We had an issue with FoxIT Reader with fonts. Some fonts wouldn't render correctly.

For starters - Everyone should not have FULL CONTROL over any directory, at most it should be R/W/M. Do you have groups split as 'Teachers' and 'Students' ?

Depends on what this server hosts and how much load is being produced. Work the theory the opposite direction - ping from the server to another device (router, switch or printer) and see whether it drops packets. Wiresharking the server won't help you with diagnosing if a switch is your issue. You need to view the logs of the device.

Wireshark will capture every packet, either sent or received from the server. There should be millions of packets travelling back and forth every day. To filter through them all is a long and arduous task. Log into the web interface of the switches and check their ARP tables. Most switches will give you statistics and LOGS of what the device has been doing. You can trend what's happening from there.

Check the AHCI settings in BIOS. If you've reset it to factory defaults you may find that it doesn't have SATA enabled by default.

You can't eliminate it. The ARP cache is like the 'directory' of what's connected to the switch and any other switch. You can reduce it by creating VLAN's or buying a higher grade switch with a larger ARP table.

Group Policies can halt during replication for any number of reasons. You can, however, manually copy them into the 2003's SYSVOL and all should be peachy.

You may find that you're switches are being overloaded with ARP traffic, which will force the switch to clear the cache giving the symptoms you've described.

When you're assigning 'Apply Policy' rights to a user.. are you using: Council\Authorised User OR council.gov.uk\Authorised User ?

Does COUNCIL resolve as domain.gov.uk ?

The invalid namespace leads to a DNS issue. Check the GPO and make sure that the domain is referenced correctly, use FQDN where possible. What client OS are you running?

Have you checked your cross domain trusts are still working ? Can your client computers resolve the 'COUNCIL' domain ?
