A member of staff is trying to print a 209Kb, 8-page publisher document 20 times. They tell publisher to print 20 copies, and the printer queue shows 600+Mb of data. There's an image on page 1, but uncompressed it takes only 1.5Mb. Anyone have any theories?

Tried opening it in Notepad?

Can you test it with a different laptop HDD?

This is what Microsoft says about it: Error message when you start a Windows Vista-based computer: "STOP: 0x00000050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" With just that error message I would've said your RAM was dodgy, but since you say plugging the HDD into your own laptop BSOD's, it's could be some dodgy cache on the HDD. Test the laptop RAM with Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool If it's dodgy, you should see some red text. Also, try and find and run a HDD diagnostic boot disk from the manufacturer. If it's a Toshiba HDD your unlikely to find one... Just for kicks, if the RAM is ok, try booting a Linux Live CD Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu

Well, I've just tried ConvertXtoDVD and DVDFlick on my work PC to see if there was any difference to my home PC. Both times I had other apps running while the AVI->DVD process was going on. With DVDFlick audio was still out-of-sync a tiny fraction, but ConvertXtoDVD appeared to be perfect. Quite detailed DVD-related stuff it can do too and easier to use. £35 a bit steep IMO, because I could buy Pinnacle Studio 14 HD for around £31 GBP which will edit my MP4, and create a DVD...
-
That's basically what happens with DVDFlick - it encodes video and audio, combines them, creates the DVD structure, then uses ImgBurn to create an ISO or burn straight to DVD. I created an ISO then mounted with Gizmo to test. The audio was a fraction out of sync. After changing the MP4 to an Xvid AVI with Mediacoder, sync was fine. It's the actual DVD creation that has the problem. Mattx: I'd forgotten about mp4cam2avi, I'll give it a go tonight - see how fast it is.

I've recently bought this from Pinnacle: Digital video transfer made easy with the Pinnacle Video Transfer Great if you want to watch from PC or mobile device, but having difficulty tranferring to DVD (and editing). It saves files as MP4 (H.264/AAC) and not many freeware apps work well with it. Those that do, I find audio sync to be a problem. Then when I finally sorted it out (by transcoding into an AVI), I tried to create an iso image with DVD Flick/DVDStyler, and the audio was out-of-sync again. Anyone got any good suggestions for software? Willing to buy something if it can handle MP4 well.

It also looks similar to leads Dell used for their laptop powerpacks a while back...

PE Builder: Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD PeToUSB: GoCoding.Com First create a PE environment with PE Builder – no need to create an ISO or burn to CD. Create a FAT Primary Partition (maximum 512Mb I believe) on the HDD you are going to use. The rest can be NTFS or FAT32 Logical Partition. You may want to turn off System Restore on the larger partition(s). Start PeToUSB and use the settings shown in the attachment. Click “Start” and allow program to format and continue. It will make the primary partition bootable and install Bart’s PE environment. You should now be able to boot into Bart PE from this HDD.

Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD Take one HDD Create at least 2 partitions: 1 has to be a 512Mb bootable (try searching Google) Install Bart PE on the 512Mb partition Add Ghost (optional: add it to Bart PE's menu system) Viola! If I remember at work tomorrow, I'll search for the more detailed instructions I wrote...

A recent issue of PC Format had an article about the Windows swap file. They saw that with 6Gb of RAM there was hardly any swap activity which leads to much quicker response/loading times. I have a dual-channel mobo so 2x3Gb or 2x4Gb matched pairs aren't very common at the moment

Turned out problem was caused by incorrect system date. I hadn't noticed it was out by a month and didn't think to check because Firefox had no problems

Vista Home Premium and IE8 installed on a laptop. When the user tries to access their Orange Webmail account from the Orange homepage it just takes them to a dedicated webmail log-in page and then keeps returning to it every time they enter their details. They can access webmail fine on another of their PC's (with XP and IE6). After trying to "reset" IE8, disabling add-ons and starting in "safe mode" without any luck, I tried Firefox. Works fine so problem is IE related somewhere. I've tried rolling back IE8 to version 7 - still no luck - and back to IE8 again - still won't work. McAfee Security Center is installed but I doubt it's causing the problem as it should also affect Firefox? I don't want to uninstall as it's owned by one of our college governers. Any help much appreciated. P.S. They'd prefer to keep using IE

I haven't tested this, I thought I'd have to keep the data in the same format...
-
I'd rather not use regedit to export the data. I think I've narrowed the problem down to the way I handle the data types. I think using "strValue" for each data type isn't going to work, I think I need to do some conversion to and from Long/Hex/Binary...

Here you go. Please be aware it's still "rough" and needs tidying up. I have quite a few debug message boxes in there and some comments to myself. I still need to implement some error checking and a restore subroutine, and I may also split some code off from the "BackupProfile" subroutine into their own subs for reusability... The idea is to be able to backup and restore local profiles without staff being present - until we get them onto network storage that is. To do that I need to get some info out of some registry keys (thanks to srochford for telling me which keys and which info is needed). I thought I'd try and automate it all in one script... <br /> ' Ignore any errors<br /> On Error Resume Next<br /> <br /> ' define some constants<br /> Const HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE = &H80000002<br /> I'm trying to read registry entries and append them to a text file (from a HTA app). I'd prefer not to call an external program (regedit or cmd). I'm having problems getting some of the extracted values to match. This is one of the keys I am trying to extract: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-1885954632-1506356648-996637233-11986] "ProfileImagePath"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,44,00,72,\ 00,69,00,76,00,65,00,25,00,5c,00,44,00,6f,00,63,00,75,00,6d,00,65,00,6e,00,\ 74,00,73,00,20,00,61,00,6e,00,64,00,20,00,53,00,65,00,74,00,74,00,69,00,6e,\ 00,67,00,73,00,5c,00,73,00,77,00,69,00,6e,00,73,00,74,00,61,00,6c,00,6c,00,\ 00,00 "Sid"=hex:01,05,00,00,00,00,00,05,15,00,00,00,48,62,69,70,a8,2d,c9,59,31,7a,67,\ 3b,d2,2e,00,00 "Flags"=dword:00000000 "State"=dword:00000100 "CentralProfile"="" "ProfileLoadTimeLow"=dword:dcd1fad3 "ProfileLoadTimeHigh"=dword:01c9e828 "Guid"="{7af97ce6-1ae2-49ce-8c84-ab4b503b16e3}" "RefCount"=dword:00000000 And this is how it looks after my extraction: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\[s-1-5-21-1885954632-1506356648-996637233-11986] "ProfileImagePath"=hex(2): "Sid"=hex: "Flags"=dword:0 "State"=dword:256 "CentralProfile"="" "ProfileLoadTimeLow"=dword:-590218541 "ProfileLoadTimeHigh"=dword:30009384 "Guid"="{7af97ce6-1ae2-49ce-8c84-ab4b503b16e3}" "RefCount"=dword:0 As you can see most of the values have been mangled. The "ProfileImagePath" and "Sid" are blank because the script returns a "Type Mismatch" error so I commented the code out. I'm not very proficient with VBS/HTA and have mostly hacked my script together with a lot of help from Google so far. My problem is with extracting and appending registry value types properly. This is my code: objRegistry.EnumValues HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, strKeyPath, arrValueNames, arrValueTypes For i=0 To UBound(arrValueNames) objRegFile.Write """" & arrValueNames(i) & """=" Select Case arrValueTypes(i) Case REG_SZ objRegistry.GetStringValue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, strKeyPath, arrValueNames(i), strValue objRegFile.WriteLine """" & strValue & """" Case REG_EXPAND_SZ ' AKA hex(2) 'objRegistry.GetExpandedStringValue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, strKeyPath, arrValueNames(i), strValue ' Type mismatch here objRegFile.WriteLine "hex(2):" & strValue Case REG_BINARY ' AKA hex 'objRegistry.GetBinaryValue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, strKeyPath, arrValueNames(i), strValue ' Type mismatch here objRegFile.WriteLine "hex:" & strValue Case REG_DWORD objRegistry.GetDWORDValue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, strKeyPath, arrValueNames(i), strValue objRegFile.WriteLine "dword:" & strValue Case REG_MULTI_SZ ' AKA hex(7) objRegistry.GetMultiStringValue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, strKeyPath, arrValueNames(i), strValue objRegFile.WriteLine "hex(7):" & strValue End Select Next Any help much appreciated.

Not sure what the "proper" method to stop it is, but I would search the hard drive for images then delete the snake picture. Should sort it out.

I think the name of the 3D system they use is "RealD 3D". Saw a box full of 3D glasses at the cinema yesterday, but when I examined them they appeared to be a bit like sunglasses. I think they use polarization... Edit: or maybe not. A quick scan of the Wikipedia entry says it only requires 1 projector...

Eventually the college will have to use it, but I was thinking more for home use as after October (probably January...) Windows 7 will be on new PC's. We're mainly looking for feedback from the staff. The only thing that's really aimed at college use in the near future will be Office 2007 as we're doing the switch this summer.
