  1. Got exactly the same thing here, paxton net2 and we use uniflow print management with card readers. Most systems read the two hidden digits off the START of the card while net2 does not. This is really annoying becuase uniflow allows me to do code conversion and chop that number down to as many or as few numbers on the card as i wish for it to read, but it can only chop the numbers off the end and not the start. Personally i scan everything into both systems but I have asked them to update uniflow to be able to ignore the first X amount of digits opposed to the end. No idea when or if that will happen though
  2. We'll have to agree to disagree there then, personally i can't see why teachers and students have need for anything more than 100mb, providing 1Gb is just driving up costs not only of the switches required on the edge but also the cost of the infrastructure to support it, and that's where it gets expensive! I mean we've got photography students working with huge pictures in photoshop, media students working in adobe premiere pro cs6 and there has never been a need to even consider 1Gb to the desktop for those uses and i can't imagine many tasks that would be any more intensive than that. I imagine some schools may consider it if they have a disgustingly inefficient roaming profile setup but then thats more a failing of implementation than the need to chuck more speed at it. By all means feel free to inform of other areas that may need it though...
  3. So you want 1Gb to the desktop? It's not worth it. Go back to 100mb to the desktop, you're just putting more stress on your network for tiny, mostly unnoticable gains in end user performance. The only users i could ever imagine actually noticing a difference would be media users working with big videos, but again they'll be stressing your storage alot with the extra bandwidth you're giving them. Not worth it.
  4. I've got a contact there but the only number they were able to give me was the one that went through to the apple care line with the talking robot Managed to find an email for the VPP for education system though so i've tried that but I could still do with a number. Problem is that my macbook for apple configurator died, and now i've got codes that say they've been redeemed when they haven't because the ipads have been wiped, and devices which say they're synced with another device and won't give me access to anything >_<
  5. Does anyone have a number for apple where i don't need to go through some stupid talking phone system? Any education specific numbers for dealing with the VPP?
  6. Just remember that the simple cost of the ipads themselves isn't the final cost of purchasing them...there's the apps, you need a mac to use apple configurator to manage them, you might want to add MDM later, you need to securely store them (as lets be honest they're prime theif target right now) ... lots to consider.
  7. Well...what a day, the macbook i use apple configurator with died. Had to take it home in order to reinstall OSX because it simply wouldn't accept any proxy settings i gave the recovery console...managed to briefly get it to work via 3G but that would have taken forever. Currently sat here at 8:40pm with it infront of me redownloading all the apps and setting up the profile again, so next questions: 1. I've imported the xls sheets that had the VPP codes on, but now thye only have one code on, and I'm fairly certain that the iPads don't have the apps on at present becuase i was in the process of wiping them back to fresh. I'll find out tomorrow but if i can't get the codes do i just need to call apple to sort that? 2. why does itunes insist on trying to download 45 copies of pages for example when we've bought 45 codes for it?! I ONLY WANT IT ONCE! Can i stop it doing this? 3. What steps can i take to ensure i don't have to do this all again in the future? Is there any easy backup solution to a mac that i can do? @TechieWils We have some strange timing, the post you've just submitted has appeared just as i've got to the end of this one, and last night i came on here 2 minutes after you'd posted at silly o'clock Will give it a read now and edit this post below this line with any questions or comments EDIT: Cheers, will try that tomorrow then. Really frustrating as it COULD be sooo much more straight forward but apple seem to have designed this in such a backward fashion.
  8. EDIT: removed what i put here originally, i was wrong: you can deploy endpoint protection standalone without the need for SCCM. I'd say SCCM is overkill for the amount of PCs you're talking here though, but if you feel it's worth it then by all means.... SCSM you don't need, that's like an organisational central management system, separate to what you're after.
  9. Thanks Simon, wonderful to hear that webdav support is coming to MBC, and i think i'm starting to get more of a grasp on what MDM can do now Can't wait to get our lightspeed setup in place, just going through the various phases of the setup with @SchoolsBroadband at the moment, fingers crossed we'll have it all available to us within the next 2 months.
  10. @TechieWils could you give me a few screenshots of your apple configurator so i can get a good idea of what you've got set? I just tried to test this but i must have done something wrong because they all started telling me i didn't have permission...out of the 30 only 2 started installing things properly, very strange.
  11. Someone else had this problem yesterday, restore your backup pre-patch and try again, if it still fails then i'd get on to sims support.
  12. Group Policy Objects / Templates not replicating since adding Server 2012 DC to domain. Worth giving it a go, just ensure you've backed up the data on the side which is up to date, just incase. As always with DFSR, much like DNS, patience is required after changing settings, so be sure to give a good amount of time for it to do its thing after any settings you change Also worth a read: http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2012/07/23/understanding-dfsr-dirty-unexpected-shutdown-recovery.aspx
  13. Thanks TechiWils, will have a good look into your suggestion for point 1 tomorrow, sounds like the sort of thing I'm after
  14. Installed this patch at lunchtime today and i've noticed our cpu load to be signifcantly lower than it was this morning....only a rough test though so will have to see over the next week or so. Be interesting to see if vmware flags up any CPU usage warnings as it has done every day for the past few weeks on the particular host SQL is on.
  15. Right I've got a few problems at the moment, i'll put the most important issue at the top and work to the least.. 1. At the moment students take pictures of themselves, make themselves the default background, leave pictures and videos all over them and the only sure fire way of clearing them off is to unsupervise and resupervise them. Upon doing this the first user is then asked to select the language settings, accept the terms and conditions etc which is a pain in the rear. 2. I'm awaiting a trial of Foldr but are there any other suggestions for easy network folder access? Our PE department seem to take huge videos then attempt to upload them, which is slow on wireless and too big to upload via HAP. At the moment we're just telling people to email themselves any work they do on them but we disallow emails greater than 10mb. 3. Printing....not sure if many of you have run into problems here but personally all our printers are on a separate vlan and the iPads can't see them unless they're on the same vlan. Also we only have one airprint compatible printer (copier) in the whole school. I've found an app that seems to be able to broadcast all the printers but i've not really looked into it in detail yet, any suggestions here? 4. This one isn't a problem, more a request for information...what exactly do most MDM solutions offer over the basic apple configurator settings? Specifically if anyone here has used it the lightspeed MDM solution? we've only had these a few weeks and I'm sick to death of them already, got more than enough to do without these damn things....
  16. Using WASP v6 here, started with v5.5, with a windows mobile PDA. I wouldn't personally recommend it for a school, it's not great, quite clunky and the PDA is dreadful.
  17. I'm considering upgrading all our PCs to office 2013 this summer, seeing as the vast majority are going to be reimaged anyway....does sims support for it come out with the summer release? We're already on 2010 so the interface is relatively well known to our staff now, when will you guys be upgrading?
  18. The "procurve" name covers everything HP from high end to low end, it's not a brand name for a specific price range. The V1910 is a rebranded 3com which sits in the low end, but there's also rebranded 3coms that sit in the mid and highend, when HP took over 3com they discontinued a lot of 3coms switch models and just slotted their most popular/suitable models into their current range where required (i think, don't quote me on that).
  19. Depends on your current level of expertise and the equipment you're working with really. The main ones though: CCNA (or whichever is the one before that) is never a bad idea Microsoft certifications focused towards the direction you wish to go in your career in IT are recognised world wide etc. Depending on what you've got to work with: VMware VCP is also very good Those alone should keep you busy for a while and will only improve a CV
  20. Have a look at uniflow, quite complex to setup the workflows but their tech guys seem to be able to make it do everything except make the tea!
  21. Just be thankful you've been given the option....when our head noticed he had £10k in a budget that was free to be used on anything he went out and dumped a load of iPads on us that we didn't want....no research went into their use, never asked us a single question :/
  22. Try 2013! Resetting the WMI Repository just fixed the issue i was having on one PC, an office PC where sims and office are pretty much the only apps ever used so luckily that was a nice easy fix, thank you!
  23. Updated my vcenter, hosts and tools on all my vms to this yesterday and i've encountered a very strange issue... It doesn't actually cause any ill effects but I'm getting a licensing capacity alarm and in the licensing reports one out of my 4 licenses shows a vRAM entitlement of 0GB o_O
  24. So it is! I actually looked at that but i was being an idiot and thought today was a different date haha cheers
  25. Two more feature requests both for the booking sheet: 1. Could you add in a system for static bookings where by you can add a start and expiry date for static bookings? So if a teacher needs a room for 10 weeks, we can recur that booking for 10 weeks? (only from an admin side of things though, wouldn't want the teachers doing it) 2. Could do with a way of seeing old bookings from past days. When we get damage in an IT room we'd like to be able to go back and see who was in that room the day the damage took place. Do those two sound likely possibilities?
