  1. I've had a couple of members of staff come to me with a disc full of Powerpoints that they want to teach with, but when they view the powerpoints, they show up black... Which isn't helpful when the text is in black also, when I open the powerpoints on my computer they appear normal and have white backgrounds... Is there a setting somewhere in Office/Powerpoint that changes the default background colour when viewing a presentation? I know that the computers the staff are using won't be up to spec to run a newer version of Office... And at the moment I don't have the budget to get some new ones...
  2. I've got a network with a handful of Linksys SRW2024 Business Series switches, I didn't build this network and I'm now having a couple of problems... Is there anywhere out there a utility that can identify the different switches on the network so that I can log into them and see where my problem lies?
  3. @%1;, the range to the wireless is pretty good (as in through a floor/celing), and the walls aren't mine to drill holes it (let alone have anyone actually trust me with a drill in the first place!)... The way that I was planning to set it up was to have the wired devices fairly close to the bridge device so huge amounts of cabling wouldn't be needed, just a few short ones..! @SYNACK, I've never really been a big fan of the ethanet over power since I was given a demonstration of how easy it is to get into by someone I worked with when we went to PC World one lunch break... But thanks for the idea, I'd not actually thought about that one..!
  4. I have been given a simple problem that has turned into a not so simple headache... The task is to add a handful of wired network devices (network printer, NAS, etc) to a wireless network. So I'm not allowed to drill holes through walls to run cable, and white trunking is a bit of an eyesore... I am slowly running out of ideas... First was to attach the wired devices to a switch and wire that to an AP or Router which can be configured as a bridge device but I can't figure out options that are needed? I've got one of each mentioned wireless devices and not a lot else, I don't really want to break the budget that's been set aside for other things, but I'm starting to lean towards getting a bridge device already configured for the task... HELP!
  5. I've had this before, managed to resolve it by having the SMART tools load in the startup bit in the start menu. I believe that there's a feature to have that happen when the software is installed. I have also spoken to SMART about the problem before and they told me to have SMART 10 installed and make sure that the board soft/firmware is up to date... Hope that helps!
  6. I have to say that it wasn't the ending that I thought it'd be but it was well worth the repetitive game play to get to! Haven't tried LA Noire yet... It's on my rent list being as I'm getting mixed responses for it...!
  7. I was wondering if anyone has used/got a VoIP system in their school..? I'm new to my current school and I've had all the ideas people have had stored up dumped on me in the last few days!! I helped set up the handsets on a "private sector" job a good number of years back, but I have no idea what will be involved in getting my school set up...

    VLE

In my experience I've found that lots of people like to use the Moodle VLE, it's pretty simple to use for both staff and students... There's also lots of free resources out there for it...
  9. Hello! I've just started at a new school and ready for Monday I've been in for two days to see what the system is like. I've been asked by a number of teachers if there's a way to clean up the printer's list on ALL the computers... There has been a large number of support contractors in before they hired me and print servers have come and gone, but the traces of the printers attached to their names haven't... Is there a script that will just remove every printer on the list, I've seen a couple that requires knowing the name and location of the printer/share... I can then set the system to remove printers on log in for a few weeks at the start of term and get a printer deployment sorted out to help tidy up...
  10. We have it... And yes it does..!
  11. If you create a Questionnaire as a resource then go down to the Response Options and set the Respondent Type to fullname you'll be able to review the answers by student...
  12. I'd agree, if it doesn't work at all it's dead (even after X number of reboots, etc). You could try plugging in a USB keyboard to make sure that it's the keyboard and not the mainboard... Don't want to go spending money on a new keyboard to find that it's not actually the keyboard...
  13. Not done it myself, but looking through MSDN I did find this and it doesn't look too complicated... Click Here Looks like you can do a deployment through a GPO that places a file in a location on the local machine etc...

That's simple enough, thank you very much!

    AirPort Question

Most likely, though I know only a few brands work with the print feature on the iPad... I gave it a shot with my iPhone a little after the update was deployed... I'm also going with the "suggestions" given by the SMT that want this to work for them... So if they want AirPorts, who am I to argue with them...

    AirPort Question

Having had a few of the SMT now have iPads to play with, they want to use the print feature in the OS updates from not too long ago... "Why can't we print normally like we do through any other computer on the network?" one of them has asked... So the question is now getting my head around the workings of AirPort... Am I right in understanding from what I've read on the Apple website that I could get an AirPort box and get it to function as an AP...? So have it attached to the network so that the iPads can talk to it and send their printing to a network printer either in the office or in another SMT office...? I did read about being able to simply plug in a printer via USB on the AirPort box and letting that function as a print server, I just get the funny feeling that it won't get singed off as an option... HELP!
  20. In that case.... I don't even look at those boards... couldn't tell you..!
  21. I did take to printing out labels that couldn't be pealed off with "DO NOT WRITE ON THIS BOARD" written on and stuck them to the tops of all the IWBs in the school... They got the hint when I'd taken to hiding their marker pens... or gutting the ones that they thought they'd hidden well from me..!
  22. The way it works is that the "Profile" folder is inside the "My Documents" folder that already sits on the server, everything inside the profiles folder is hidden so that they can't see it. We just want to have a way to stop them adding to this folder or set of folders if they have some on their desktop already... We're having the whole system changed over the summer holidays and the file structure is being changed... So we're trying to make things as easy as possible...

  24. That's what we had been talking about before, but we're looking for a way to make the staff tidy up their desktops... and thought that changing things so that they can't save to their desktops with the files that are already there would make them think a little more about what's going on...
  25. I'm looking for a way to make a logon script run to change the permissions to a folder in all staff user areas... In simple terms, our users profiles are stored in the same place as their saved files and the SMT want us to disable their ability to save to their desktops... I'd of thought that a script to change the folder permissions at logon would let us achieve this, then we can send a mail around to all staff telling them that if they don't remove work from their desktop it will be removed for them... This script method or any other method would be very helpful... I hope that makes sense
