Oops - I did mean audacity sorry, - think I wrote that post while trying to track down a version of knoppix with a working antivirus (as f-prot's site was down) to clean up a bit of a mess somebody had made!

I wouldn't trust Knoppix as the one and only recording of a one-off performance! I've never found it to be stable enough for that.

We've stopped using IT Index having got fed up with the pushy calls, and we found other suppliers more competitive.

The individual numbers are those which you send a text to to update your status, rather than from which texts are sent. I gather most of Europe has been using a +44 number, one which purports to be UK number but turns out to be in the Isle of Man, so when you text it you get charged rather than it coming out of your free text allowance.

They've just announced that they can't afford to send texts to users in the UK any more. Shame that, I was planning to play with the twitter API to set up a quick a dirty "some pillock's unplugged the server and it's on UPS" notification system.

I run a Power Mac G5 (dual 1.8GHz with OSX Client version) as a very capable and reliable AMP server.

Windows Media Encoder will let you stream the PC output - if the latency that streamed video has would be acceptable.

Following comments from our student council, the powers that be decided that student PCs should be upgraded to Office 2007 for the forthcoming year. Which comprehensively screws up the summer of anybody who has to teach with it next year as they'll have to learn the new version and update all of the materials. But what the hell, it ticks the box for "we act on student's wishes". I have the student council minutes to hand ready for the returning students next year who will complain that they don't know how to use the new version... (My own views, not those of my employer - if it wasn't obvious!)

Depends what you're generating the plasma display with, but maybe do something clever with the RSS feed to present it in a more interesting way?

If you have a VLE you may be able to handle blogs through that. We use Journal LX within Blackboard.

That's what I'm seeing Ben, but it seems to force 16 bit colour on you, no "you can run it in 32-bit if you want, but it might not perform too well, we did warn you" option.

If you're doing that amount it might be cheaper to send it to a friendly print shop rather than do it on an inkjet.

Not sure if I'm missing something here, I'm using ActivStudio in anger for the first time, and it seems that if I paste in or import (via the resource library) photographs, the colour depth is dropping to 16bit, and making my nice sharp images look a bit rubbish. Is there a setting that I've overlooked, or is this just a limitation of the Promethean kit?

My mysql instance is on a Mac, so this is the Unix variant, but it should be similar/identical mysqldump -u username --password=password --all-databases > path-to-file.sql The main gotcha is to make sure the username and password you supply have sufficient rights to be able to read everything, but not too many rights that you would be uncomfortable putting the password in plain text, ie don't use root!

The command line mysqldump.exe will let you dump the whole lot to a text file, and that can called from a batch file and run as a scheduled task

The PTB have decided that we're moving some of our machines to Office 2007 for next academic year. Can anyone recommend a training package for somebody proficient with 2003 to get to grips with 2007? I'm looking for something self paced, probably online or CD/DVD based, rather than a certification, as it's going to be a "when I've got half an hour to spare" thing. I don't use Office in anger that much for "just play with it" to be effective.

Back in the good old days (!) it was common to use servers as routers. Our Netware servers had about 4 network cards - on 10-Base-2 with BNC connectors. One NIC handled the incoming network uplink, and the others had long chains of PCs hanging off them.

Anything involving printers rarely turns out to be a good thing. Cleaning keyboards is a bit tedious too.

I do something similar in one of our IT Labs (dunno why we call suites labs in HE). The room is a bit too big for people at the back to be able to see the IWB, so I run a VNC server (not as a service) on the lecturer PC, and a listening client on student PCs which are too far back to be able to see. Then the lecturer PC has a couple of batch files - one to start the VNC server and add the machines with the client, one to kill the server. They're labelled "start broadcasting" and "stop broadcasting" so even teaching staff can understand what they mean Seems to have gone down well with those who have tried it out.

I'm appalled by this thread, I hadn't realised schools paid so poorly for the people who keep the place running. I work in one of the Schools of a University. Much of the infrastrucure (network, domain etc) is handled centrally so we deal with supporting users in our area and providing specific bits of infrastructure that just our area need. The lowest paid member of our team in the School is on Grade 5 which is between £18-21k depending on how long you've been collecting annual increments. So I'm amazed at how little NMs with so much more responsibility are paid. Compare ths job spec (not from my institution) with that of an NM Newcastle University: AV/IT Technician I just don't know how schools can justify such poor pay.
