so just been told parents coming in tonight and will need to be able to login to chromebooks to access some websites. This will be after school and they are planning to just borrow the pupil's chromebooks, maybe 30 to 60 ?! I was thinking of just creating a generic account all parents can login with eg student. Would that work e.g with 60 parents all logging in as "student@our-google-domain" on individual chromebooks at the same time ?! What would be the "proper" way to do this ?

Only got one physical host server here (it runs a hyper-v DC) so I guess veam is not an option, unless it could go on a PC? We want to backup the hyper-v DC and some office 365 teams / onedrive Any suggestions ? Only real requirement is we must have an offline copy. edit: @jamoritch were you not happy with redstor ?

yeah that last link is about allowing popups. Sounds like you are on windows on chromebooks just seems weird you have to install the app for the domain then also add it to an allowlist also the permissions for sketchup seem quite extensive, is this similar with other apps ?

Hi, we've used sketchup before on chromebooks but it has stopped working Looks like it wants more permissions granted. Also noticed it wants "See, edit, create, and delete all of your Google Drive files" is it "normal" for apps to want all these permissions, esp. delete !? I removed sketchup and installed again for the domain (Admin Install) Still not working, bit of googling later: allowed popups and cookies for edu.sketchup.com Still not working. Noticed we had "Don’t allow users to install and run apps from the Marketplace" Changed it to "Allow users to install and run only selected apps from the Marketplace" and added sketchup to allow list. Finally working! Is this how to do it now, e.g. you need to install for the domain and add to the allow list ?

If I go ahead with my plan of one raid 10 virtual disk OS on C:, VMs on D: would it be possible to "migrate" OS to a new raid at a later date, i.e when I get some budget to buy another couple disks ? separate question: could I just buy a couple of cheap ssds off amazon or would that void my dell hardware/support warranty i.e. do I have to buy dell approved disks from dell ? I'm assuming I'm allowed to add disks without voiding warranty !

so you mean ideally buy another 2 disks and create a new virtual disk (eg raid 1) for the host OS server 2022 then use my existing four as Raid 10 for the VMs ? The Raid controller is a PERC H755, would that work e.g. can you have several virtual disks with different Raid levels on same controller ? If you did only have the 4 discs to play with how would you do it?

mmm, lots to think about here (as usual ) out of interest how large do you have your OS / C partition on the hyper-v host? is 100GB enough ? Like I said I was thinking of one virtual disk raid 10 (with my 4 ssds) then putting on Server 2022 in a 100GB C: partition, created during the OS install Then after OS installed create a new partition D: (using all remaining space) for the hyper-v VMs. (edit not sure I have budget to buy any more disks right now)

just setting up a new dell server as a hyper-v host. It's Raid 10 with 4 x 2TB SSD drives Are the defaults ok for read / write /stripe i.e. : stripe element size: 256KB read policy: read ahead write policy: write back

thanks all, I was just concerned that having two print servers with printers using the same "ports" e.g. might cause issues but thinking about it I guess thats how TCP/IP works! ie it can handle multiple clients connecting to on port 9100 I noticed we had a lot of ports that didn't seem to be used like _1 _2 _3 etc so I thought I'd tidy up by deleting them. This seemed to cause the printers to disappear from the control panel: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers Caused a minor panic last night but luckily they are still showing under the print management tool / snap in and everything still seems to be working

you have a good memory ! it's "export printers to a file" so you think its ok to have two print servers with same printers (which will be the situation after I import the file on new server)? e.g. as I can see the Port Description is "Standard TCP/IP Port" and seem to be several for each printer e.g. named _1 _2 note we only have only "Type 3 - User Mode" drivers think these we're added manually by the MFD company's engineer via the old control panel: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers rather than the server's print management tool

Hi, we have one DC 2012R2 which has the print services role and shared printers deployed via a user GPO I want to move printing to a VM (member server 2016) in the safest way possible. My plan was to add the print service role to the 2016 server, add the existing printers manually, share them out and deploy via a new GPO to some test users. If all tests ok then apply new GPO to all users and set old GPO to delete the printers shared on the DC. Then unshare printers on DC and remove print services role. How does that sound ? I seem to remember a thread about exporting printers from "print management" (and import on new server?) but can't find it. But like I said want to do this in safest way possible so would want to test the any new config first

if I remember the mappings are not "recursive" ? e.g. if you map the /students OU to Students group it would not work for students in a child OU e.g. /students/Year11 you need an explicit mapping for each OU (I think ?)

Hi, we have a microsoft 365 team, teachers open the team via outlook web app in chrome browser, then from the "Files tab" they Open in Sharepoint and then they Sync the root folder (Documents). Then Onedrive does the sync to create a local copy so teacher can work with files in windows File Explorer rather than in the browser. They are also logged in to office/word and in onedrive settings have "use office applications to sync office files that I open" ticked I think this is a valid way of working, though open to any suggestions of a better workflow (as this is a manual process) ! Anyway been investigating several file sync issues, e.g. sync errors, files not opening, and just today had a hunch that might be because of long path names e.g. one problem file has a full path of 280 characters e.g. C:\users\teacher\School\Team - Documents\very long path\lots of sub folders\file.notebook could this be the cause ? For this particular file it appears to have synced locally (on windows 10) but on opening smart notebook throws an error. If I copy file to desktop, copy works and I can open the file ok. I guess if it is "long paths issue" there's no easy fix other than re-organizing folder structure and then move files to new structure (would have to do in teams e.g. in browser tab?) Would be quite a big manual job

also when an ipad is plugged into your Mac via usb you can share your internet connection (ipad USB) so that might help ? (i.e. to push out correct settings over wired usb)

thanks, yes my ipads are in DEP (apple school manager) and have been assigned to jamf then in jamf I've assigned the "Automated Device Enrollment Profile" to the devices I'm preparing them in apple configurator as I figured that was quickest way to set them up ? I have the mac sharing it's internet "ipad usb" (thanks to @RLR for that tip) so no need to connect to wifi or add a wifi profile / blueprint just connect to mac then prepare, leave as "automated enrollment" and its just a couple of mouse clicks. If i was to just give an ipad to a teacher in the box and let them go through setup assistant and connect it to wifi manually I guess it would enroll into Jamf but would it be supervised without being prepared in apple configurator ? so far jamf looks pretty good, slight confusing when you google for help as there seem to be different versions jamf school (we have this) jamf pro, jamf now, and the email support not great, e.g. emailed them asking how to fix iMovie asks to: sign in to App Store and their reply /solution was "Apple has to use an Apple ID for its pre-installed Apps" !

how do you "hide" the apps ? is looking like wiping ipad is going to be easiest way to remove garageband, imovie etc (can't trust students to delete them!) so they don't ask user to sign in. Bit annoying as I will probably have to redeploy a few like garageband/imovie actually just done a test with a brand new unboxed ipad: connect to mac via usb Apple Configurator 2, right-click the device and navigate to Advanced > Erase all Content and Settings. (so removes Pre-Installed Apple Apps) then prepare seems to work ok so not too bad after all wonder how many apple configurator can do at once, e.g. a trolley of 30 ?

Agh, didn't see that lockscreen payload, thanks, not sure I fancy erasing all the ipads just to get rid of imovie, pages etc, maybe a manual remove job for some kids like you say what about all the "internal apps" like Photo Booth, there are loads of them! Suppose not doing too much harm but just a distraction / untidy.

just finding my way with jamf school: I've created a static device group Students with some profiles (for wifi, certs, restrictions) and apps and added the ipads. So far so good but now I'd like to tweak a few things: What is best way to remove apps like Photo Booth (jamf lists these under "internal apps") ? GarageBand won't start as it asks me to sign in (these are not shared ipads) jamf lists these (pages, imovie etc) as "user installed" ? Finally how to I add the ipad name to the lock screen ?

having some issues with this. in web filter log I put in denied for category and I'm seeing this is this because app doesn't like "decrypt and inspect" ? Should I add edshed.com to a category and set "do not filter" in web filter and/or do not inspect in HTTPS inspection policies ? edit: tempted to add a "do not filter" and a "do not inspect" for whole Education and Reference category or is that a bit rash ?
