Hi The main reason for looking at his now is a) to look and see what the best way forward is, and b) plan the budget to make it happen. so far I have had what I have asked for (but then again I haven't been unreasonable in my requests! Steve

Hi sorry if i didn't make it clear, we have all moved onto one site so there is no need for replication any more, many of the issues I am facing is because there still are some remnants of the DFS somewhere (don't know where exactly), hence the decision to start again Steve

We share a 100mb broadband link with the secondary and primary schools on our campus, but we are on one site now! the network has GB backbone and fibre between buildings. Steve

Hi We are a special school that has just moved into a new building from 2 separate sites, each site had its own DC and we had one exchange box hosted on one of the site. Shared areas and users who worked across both sites had their work replicated but this broke down some time before the move onto one site Having moved onto one site we are still seeing lots of issues where users are not actually seeing the correct home directory etc. The server were originally setup by county but later the management of this was taken over by myself, the documentation of the setup is minimal / sketchy at least, so I find it pretty impossible to see what is happening. The servers are 5 years old next Summer and I'm thinking the time is right to replace them and start again from scratch. I would likely move to office 365 for mail , but the questions I have are: Should we go virtual or stay as we are with dedicated servers? how would I go about moving people's work, i think I would want to recreate the users but transfer the files? At the minute we have 2x 2012r2 servers which act as file servers, one is DC we have one 2008r2 server which hosts exchange 2010 We use a lot of video / photographic evidence being a special school so wee do use a lot of storage any suggestions / tips? thanks Steve

Genee G-Touch Interactive Touchscreens / Televisions
Stevecee replied to abers's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Hi Another thumbs up for Genee from me! We have just had Genee supply and fit their boards in our new school (last Easter), having gone trough the process that you are now undertaking. I too was looking at a choice between Clevertouch and Genee, we went for Genee in the end because of the software. The fitters were efficient, friendly and best of all tidy! whatever (very small amount) of aftersales support we have needed has been dealt with swiftly. PM me if you want me to talk further about our experience Steve -
No its a flat network, we checked out=r Aruba controller and all should be fine - but isn't Steve

Hi we are generally running ios9 but it did the same under ios8 - BTW it also isn't visible form an OSX machine on a wired connection Steve

Hi Not sure but I'm asking the question! I have been testing and it seems that the queue is visible for about 20 mins then goes! Cheers Steve

Hi I have a queue named 'iPad Printing' that sits on an OSX server (this is a virtual queue for papercut and prints to whichever copier the person releases it from). when on the ipad this queue should be visible on the list of available printers in the print dialogue, it is visible for a short while then goes missing! HTH Steve

Hi we are using built in printing on the iPad (which is airprint) that prints to a virtual queue on an OSX server, which in turn is controlled by Papercut on our Primary server
-
Hi We use Papercut Successfully at school and have a secondary server set up on an OSX server so that our pupils and staff can print from their iPads, the problem is that despite the energy setting being set to never let the hard drives go to sleep and the sharing setting set to 'wake on LAN' it still keeps going offline and not broadcasting across to the iPads. any ideas please? Thanks Guys!! -
Hi We recently moved our 2 sites into a new school building, one of my holiday jobs is to make our network shares etc reflect that we are now all on one site. Each site had their own DC and the sites were connected over the county WAN. The 2 sites were originally 2 different schools and both had primary and secondary pupils (we're a Special School). I would like to move the Staff from being Site 1 staff or Staff 2 staff to being Primary staff or Secondary staff. I want to create new shares for their Home Directories and redirect their Docs etc there. The problem I am having is that if I move a member of staff to their new group which has the right GP to redirect their docs to the new share, I am still not seeing their network share (ie. as "Documents" when I log in as them. also is there a script that will create the new home directories without having the staff (who obviously are not here) log in? We dont want to change passwords etc as this will mean the staff will not get their emails etc. Steve

What MDM do you use?
Stevecee replied to dan_at_smoothwall's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Hi we are using Meraki at the moment but are in the process of moving to CASPAR, meraki was fine but we had an issue and they wanted megabucks to support us through it. CASPAR seems to have some good education features too! Steve- 7 replies

Looking For Apple MDM Solution Recommendation
Stevecee replied to Fazza's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Sorry I was trying to answer the question about MDMs I have just finished doing quite a bit of research on MDMs, The free version of Meraki come with no support and is a enterprise solution. Lightspeed and Casper are built for education and have many more features that would help me in an educational environment. We have just moved into our new school (from 2 different sites), and I'm having a little bit of trouble getting our pac file right so we can see our internal print and Foldr servers. We are looking to host our Smoothwall locally as I am looking to use the Global Proxy settings on the iPads so we are filtering internet use off site. We have over 400 devices on site and really we do not experience many issues, and wouldn't look to change! Steve -

Hi We use Meraki at the moment as it's free, however there is no support. We have been looking at Lightspeed and Caspar Suite recently who are both priced similarly at just under £5 per year. Casper needs an onsite box at the moment in this country and has a one-off setup of £1750. WE have Foldr to access our network and we use Papercut for printing (this is a big issue for us at the moment as to get the iPads to take Proxy server exception is through using a PAc fils and this seems as clear as mud). we going to host our own Smoothwall on-site (rather than county), and this should allow the setting up of transparent proxies! HTH Steve -
Hi We have about 60 staff ipads, when we gave them out we gave them a instruction booklet giving step by stpe instructions on how to set them up (we had already done some pre setup work in Configurator). The instructions took them step by step setting up their work email and also setting up an Apple ID with their work email, The Meraki profile was added in configurator and we invited them to join our VPP at that time. Once done we can send / remove apps but they can also add their own apps, this allows them to research apps etc. but we didn't restrict use to this as we wanted to encourage their use and therefore the staff skills! Hi I have been looking at using LightSpeed for our MDM and web filtering solution, however this won't be a cheap solution for us as we have over 400 devices at the moment. I am interested in using it to set a Global Proxy and filtering the devices when off site. County also offers Smoothwall at a reduced cost and I understand that Smoothwall can do a similar thing. Has anyone had experience of using Smoothwall to do this and how well did it work with iPads? Feedback appreciated! Cheers Steve

Hi we are in the middle of a 200 ipad roll out we are using AT Computers and are more than happy with the service. Have used Toucan before when I worked in London and was happy with them too! Steve

Hi I would rate the Griffin Survivor cases as well, we have only had one casualty but that was thrown from a first floor window onto tarmac! You can get the Parotec cases cut out for the cases, (something to watch out for as taking the cases off to sync is a real pain). A cheaper option might be a Mac Mini - the server option would cost less than a MacBook. At this stage you need to look at how you will maintain these, if you are likely to add many more then its worth considering a MDM which will push out apps over the internet. If you want to PM me then I ma happy t talk through how we do this Steve
