We tried blocking cortana but it caused the start button to freeze - cortana seems to be too embedded.I gave up and made sure applocker/SRP's were in place to block these files even though they can browse to them, but 10 is a bit of a turd to manage in this sense

I have to admit, with our Hive the heating bills are the same as before - but we pretty much had the schedule the same anyway!

We switched to Hive last year, mainly because the wireless thermostat packed in (on our crappy Worcester boiler - never buying one of those again!) £150 for their thermostat or £199 to install Hive and have the app controlled heating. Its worked well and we tend to just set the schedule and forget it - we have occasionally upped the temperature on the way home to make it nice and toasty.We've also just got some of the power adaptors so we have lights on a schedule as well. They seem to work well.

Ahh now you mention it, I did ask them whilst wearing a pencil moustache and wrapped in a swastika flag, do you think that may have influenced their answer?

Well I thought maybe it was just me (judging by the replies on here) but a straw poll at work (from ages 20-50) and EVERYONE said they same thing really when asked what they though of it, and that was SS was immediately associated with the nazis

I built gpos from scratch for 10 and gradually deployed. I did that same from 2000 to xp and xp to 7 so I’m happy I did things the best way. I wanted to like 10 as it was better than 8 and did appear to be better than 7 but core things still cause problems such as updates and printers. I like to find out the new ways of doing things, but with 10 it seems there’s just no workaround for some things, such as printers. Just look at all,the threads with printer problems! I currently have printers deployed using 4 different methods and that’s only getting me a 90% success rate. Fix the basics Microsoft and I might change my mind, otherwise I think 10 is a mess and judging by the various MS cockups over the last couple of years I think they’ve lost the plot.

After much trying I’m finally coming to realise 10 isn’t the way forward. 1:1 devices will ultimately become the norm and although 10 is designed more for that it’s still crap (updates,printers etc) so I can see more chrome book and apple devices in my future. Thanks MS I’ve had a great couple of decades supporting windows but you’ve cocked this one right up in my view by concentrating on the fluff that no one wants and not providing a rock solid os like MacOS has become.

Definitely this, if it’s the 5400rpm drive then they are absolute dogs! I put an ssd in a 2014 mini with the original 4gb ram and it was a different machine.

I’m using the speedof.me site to measure the access. All traffic goes out through a router on an 80mb line. The wireless connection speeds reports as 450mbps in the connection info, and the lan is 100mbps as it goes through a powerlan adaptor. I know there’s a few factors in there, but the windows 7 and Mac wireless speeds tally up, with the windows 7 lan being the same. Just the Mac lan drops down quite a lot! It’s odd, I’m just using the WiFi at the moment but that’s usually the opposite of what you’d do!

Yeah it’s 100mb switch, so my point is that both the Mac and the w7 laptop should show the same test speed, like they both do over WiFi. The Mac and laptop both have gigabit lan so the Mac should really match the laptop. Wireless results are pretty much identical.

The ISP speed is a max of 80, so getting 60 is about right. However, I would have expected the same speed on LAN as Wifi - which is the case on the Windows 7 laptop, just not the mac mini

I've set up a Mac Mini recently, and when connect to the wifi (450Mbps connection speed) an internet speed test consistently shows around the 60Mpbs mark, however with the wifi turned off and the 100Mbps LAN connection on, the speed test consistently shows around 25-35Mbps! If anything I would have expected it to be the other way around - plugging a Windows 7 laptop into the same LAN port and running the same test brings results of 60Mpbs which makes sense! Its running Mojave, but it was doing the same with Sierra before. Is there a known issue with 2012 Minis gigabit lan ports?

I think LTSC is my only remaining option. I've spent the last year or more faffing about trying to get printers to install in a dozen different ways, from 1607 to 1809 and the results are always variable. Its always the same error "Group Policy was unable to add per computer connection. Error code 0x57" but different users/printers/PCs etc. Never had so many issues with an OS and its peed me off so much I've ditched my Windows PC at home and actually swapped to a mac, this OS has made the job a pain - umpteen messages a day about missing printers and I can't offer them a solution, despite trying the many options posted on here.

Ah cheers found it now - it wasn't there when I set this up a few months ago, but its now appeared on the second page, I just an error when trying to activate so time to contact MS I guess!

That's where I'm stuck, nowhere in my VLSC seems to give me the option to activate the O365 ProPlus I have showing in the License summary? Where do you find it, or it is something that you have to contact MS to add?

Found it - powershell to disable self sign in: Set-MsolCompanySettings -AllowEmailVerifiedUsers $false Now I just need to find why my OVS O365 ProPlus for Faculty isn't showing up in the O365 domain (its showing as A1 Plus) as this was the whole reason I set this up, so staff and students could download Office at home via our OVS agreement.

It looks like they've been signing up through this email activation method: https://products.office.com/en-gb/student/office-in-education That gives them OneDrive and sharepoint by default. I didn't want them signing up until I'd had a chance to properly sort the 365 domain, as its only really been setup recently - everyone should be using GSuite which is AD synched. It doesn't look like I can disable the self sign up option anywhere either.

Is that something that is enabled by default? Ideally I don't want it enabled just yet

Bit of a 365 noob question here, as we use GSuite, but we have a A1 Plus faculty domain (mainly because we have OVS and this allows office apps downloads at home) but it isn't used for email etc. Its not synched with AD or anything, yet we have a dozen or so users who have accounts in there (using the GSuite domain email address) My question is, how have users managed to create their accounts? I can't see how they can create their logins, and I'm the only admin!

I'm sick to the back teeth of W10 and printing, its utterly hopeless and unreliable! We even had situations where the printers appear in Word etc, but not in the control panel!

@Arthur - that worked a treat, thank you for the detailed info! I'd tried the compatibility toolkit a few years ago with something else and didn't have much luck. I updated the ADK and went through it again and they run without any prompts!

I must admit I haven't tried con2prt, we use in our primary schools but I've avoided it here.
