  1. so basically, if you are installing the latest release of windows 11 then server 2025 should be ok. otherwise stick to server 2022
  2. i just gotta figure out what 23H2 means lol.. I'd be installing the latest release on microsoft ovs portal! 1 DC 100 clients.. server 2025 SHOULD be ok hopefully?
  3. I can only imagine the stress. Lucky we only have sims on local desktops.... no offsite sims business.
  4. What are people using which is GDPR compliant? I just want a full backup offsite say 2tb including daily SQL backups offsite. If the school loses 1 weeks of data after a disaster has happened that will be acceptable I think!
  5. TBH I had sims running on server 2019. Solus local. Every workstation did the solus update perfectly. Patches on the sims server were flawless. The app itself has issues - we all know this but running locally it was fine. How much more are people paying for the cloud hosting? - guessing some put that in their TCO when comparing cloud / local install. Have SIMS given a date as to when schools MUST move to cloud hosting?
  6. Hi, sorry to ask this question on this thread. I am looking at setting up a new DC for a school. Are we still saying server 2025 is still in beta? Best to avoid? Remember this will be a new DC, going to start afresh with policies etc. Do let me know. Kind regards 5nowman
  7. This is SOOO right! Let them lead the internal discussion. You just make it technically happen. Head > Dept. Heads> Leadership > Staff.
  8. Your point is exactly why I am here. There is no one solution that fits all and I appreciate your view. I gotta look at Interactive board resources, what applications they use and PCs / Laptops. Lots to consider. Thank you and all though for this thread.
  9. Dell all the way. Just remember to check the size of the cabinet! Network cabinets are not Server Cabinets lol. Check the depth too. The biggest pain about Dell servers and TBH the only pain are the installation of the server rails! As with all Dell Servers.. install the Dell open manage and always go for the PSU redundency regardless what server you go with. Good Luck!
  10. This is a good answer and thank you for taking the time out. I was thinking of a weekly SQL offsite backup along with all data from the school to google drive on the school domain. The school do have an active ESS license. I was thinking about a possible GDPR fiasco... What do ESS recomment as a compliant backup solution?
  11. 1 form entry primary school. wireless is ruckus with controller. do you need 2 servers now?!?! is it not good enough to backup the vm - say hyperv V M?
  12. Ah even for SIMS ? I am getting different answers from different people. I have been told that for WONDE.. even if SIMS is in the cloud you still need a a machine to run the local stuff.
  13. Please correct me if I am wrong. SIMS runs on the free version of SQL no? Wonde needs a dedicated machine. door entry systems that link to net2 need a local version of software installed. Ideally running on a server Windows AD if running locally - inc. Group policies etc. server file storage. Would it not become more expensive to have all cloud AND server of some kind locally instead of a local server more beefed up? This is a curious post not like an argument or anything as I am open to cloud if cost justifies it 5nowman
  14. Hi, This is an interesting topic as I have found... cloud MIS costs more annually and in the end local server versions work out cheaper in the long run. I won't mention companies but one is charging an extra over £700 a year extra plus a certain amount per pupil. That is over £900 a year, over 5 years £4500 alone. On top you still need a form of a server to store admin files, pupil files, staff files. Databases for say door entry systems. So you still need a server in a form. All these add up and in the end (IMHO) I am finding it cheaper to not go cloud. Are there any other views on this?
  15. Hi Hope you are all well. I just found out you can sync folders in synology to the cloud! specifically Google Drive? Before this is done.. 1. Are you all ok storing files to Google Drive? e.g. say sims and FMS SQL databases? 2. Did you need to get anything signed off regarding GDPR? 3.Can anyone give any advice on the above? e.g rsync to google drive - encryption? is it safe? uk data laws allow it to be ok? Any thoughts welcome. Thank you.. Kind regards 5nowman
  16. ok so windows 10 on something less than 8th gen passes CE Windows 11 on anything less than 8th gen will not pass CE ? How does it work if you do the rufus bypass.. and windows 11 installs... does this pass the CE ?
  17. Straight from microsoft. This has really stumped me. Hopefully others have had the same issue. Any advice would be kindly appreciated. Kind regards. 5nowman
  18. All, Hope you are all well. Had some mad issues this week and wanted to see if anyone else have had them. 1. Machines stuck on windows updates. configuring update... for AGES. Hard shutdown... same message. Take the Network cable out, percentages go up and machines gets to logon screen. Need to put cable back in, in order to login to domain. Reboot with NIC in and machines gets stuck with clock, and cannot do anything else. Mouse moves. Any ideas?? I am stumped. Not nic drivers. Not bios. Nothing trackable in event viewer. It is happening to about 10 machines out of 60. No model / OS link. OS = Windows 10 LTSC - has been perfect until the recent windows updates... or crashing during. Kind regards 5nowman
  19. Hi, Primary school. We have a visitor panel that records staff in. How are you all doing registers for pupils? What if one left at 10am and a drill happened at 11.30 ? How do you know which pupils are in without having to go into sims? does your visitor system record pupils that are in? I just want to get a feel on what others are doing? Do let me know please. Any info / insights would be very grateful. Kind regards. 5nowman
  20. Hi, Hope you are all well. I have a quick question about the smartnotebook license. we have paid for premium licenses. Does that mean we can use it on any interactive board not necessarily smart interactive panels? Any info would be cool. Have a good day all. Kind regards. 5nowman
  21. Cisco switch never showed any port up port down or anything. I figured out the problem! Pin 5 seems to have broken along the way. The netgear switch still sees this.. cisco ones says "get lost" and doesn't even show a green light which is odd.. Anyone seen this before?
  22. I traced it back. The cable connects to a gigabit managed switch. When plugged into the new switch no green light. Unmanaged 10/100 switch and you get the green light.. no need for a cross over no uplink port on the switch.
  23. The cable from the building to the netgear. I put a crossover at the end of the cable and plugged it into the cisco No light Plugged cable into cisco direct... no event log eg port connected. Why is there no light on the cisco but there is on the netgear.
  24. My apologies.. cable is copper. I will get cisco error tomorrow when I check again. A computer connected to the new switch lit up ok.. it was just the cable that comes in from another building. Copper all the way in that building too. Seems really odd. Thank you for replying!
  25. Hi, Hope you are all well. We have a network cable coming in from building A to building B. In building B it connects to port one of an unmanaged negear 10/100 poe switch We have a cisco 250x poe switch gigabit. When I connect that cable to any port on the cisco switch no green lights come on yet they do on the netgear. Regardless of what vlans are setup on the managed switch.. the green light should come on right to show data coming in? Any ideas anyone? Please help as this does not make sense to me. Many thanks and kind regards. 5nowman
