We have Microsoft TMG so have the ability to filter, however I dont think there is an unfiltered connection on offer at the moment (we'd still have to go via their proxy server farm), I think they were investigating it last time I asked.

Broadband : Comparison Chart - not quite an SLA but it does state 1:1. I just wanted to get a feel from other schools in the Lancashire area on how theirs was performing (CLEO schools). Its not about being fast enough, its supposed to be 1:1 100mbit/100mbit, during the school day I've seen around 20-50mbit at most. Thats less than 50%! Cant even achieve full speeds when most of the network is inactive during the holidays.

Two tests today: 80Mb down 49Mb up 55Mb down 66Mb up Ran within a few minutes of each other, still quite poor considering its easter break.

Worse today. 10-20Mb down, 3-15Mb up (including school traffic)

Has anyone noticed poor performance recently? Im consistantly getting 20-40Mbit out of a possible 100Mbit during the day, after 4pm im seeing closer to 80Mbit, still not maximum but much better, On the whole webpages are sluggish to load. Poulton area, Lancashire. Anyone else find this?

@andy_nic I used psexec remotely to run the command, exited with error code 0 (successful) then did a remote restart. I think I mustnt have waited long enough (a good 5 or 10 minutes wasnt enough!). Since rearming those 29 machines, they have actually activated along with the other 'non-rearmed' ones in other rooms. Dont know why It needed a rearm to start it off and not on the remaining machines! Maybe If 1 was not in the xml I wouldnt have encountered this problem. Either way it appears to be solved! Thanks

@SYNACK Sysprep ran fine when I did it, no errors. @andy_nic im just trying slmgr.vbs /rearm on 29 of them now (followed by a reboot) see what happens. EDIT: its only give them the standard 30-days additional time, no activation.

Starting to rollout windows 7 enterprise across the site. Finished the image and getting activation problems on all clients. Hi All, I realise folder redirection has been discussed alot, but cant seem to find this particular answer. How have you all re-arraged (if at all) your home folder structure? Windows XP had \\server\share\USERNAME as H: and also my documents redirected to the same path, My videos/pictures etc within that folder - easy. With Windows 7 with now have alot more folders within the profile folder (not within my documents). C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData C:\Users\USERNAME\Contacts C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents C:\Users\USERNAME\Downloads C:\Users\USERNAME\Favorites C:\Users\USERNAME\Links C:\Users\USERNAME\Music C:\Users\USERNAME\Pictures C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games C:\Users\USERNAME\Searches C:\Users\USERNAME\Start Menu C:\Users\USERNAME\Videos These are all redirectable with group policy assuming you have updated/upgraded. Assuming most people redirect the desktop and start menu to a shared location, what did you do to the rest of the redirects when moving to windows 7? Did you leave all the redirections alone and just point "Documents" to \\server\share\username? Did you recreate their folder structure to match windows 7? \\server\share\USERNAME\AppData \\server\share\USERNAME\Contacts \\server\share\USERNAME\Documents Etc.. Did you do it another way? Did you only redirect a select few? If so why? If you didnt redirect them all did you encounter any problems? Example: People downloading something to the default download folder, c:\users\username\downloads, then not finding it later when they moved computers) Video editing (media maker/adobe) trying to use the video folder by default and not their my home drive (again not saving to the network path)? Im guessing the older software would still look for 'my documents' and find the new 'documents' rather than using 'Videos' but as time goes on I could see the software being updated to reflect the profile changes. Hi, If your user folders are the same spelling as the usernames you can use this batch file (drop it into the same folder where all the user folders are eg e:\users\students or e:\users\students\intake-year) @echo off for /f "delims=" %%a in ('dir *.* /b /a:d') do ( cacls %%a /E /T /G %%a:F ) This will give the user '07testuser' full access, sub-folders/files too, to folder '07testuser'.

Dont mean to dig up an old thread, but! Im currently looking at 'load balancing' the students. Having added up all our students surnames, its split 65% A-M and 35% N-Z. As you can see doing A-M Surnames on 1 server and N-Z on another would not work out very well. As far as I know there isnt an inteligent way of doing this with current budgets/setups (someone please correct me!). I have decided to do the following: All Staff on server 1, first child in each year group on server 2, second child on server 3, third on server 2, forth on server 3, etc. This can be done quite quickly using Excel and WiseSoft's "Bulk AD Users" - great tool! Using DFS im probably going to have something like: \\domain.local\Users\Staff -> server1\Staff \\domain.local\Users\Students1 -> server2\Students \\domain.local\Users\Students2 -> server3\Students To answer the OP: you cannot have the contents of 2 servers listed from one DFS. When you browse to the DFS root, the workstation chooses one of the 2 targets to view and sticks with it until it becomes inaccessible or the workstation is logged off/restarted. Hope that helps!

Are there any schools in the Lancashire area running either of these extensively? Id like to visit 2 schools with our head of ICT, one running google and one running ms, to see how they compare, whats missing from each of the services, office integration etc. Specifically we would like to see moodle integration/single sign on and see how far you have pushed it. If we take one of these 2 routes, I can imagine we will be testing the limits and always trying the next step, so it would be useful to visit a school with a similar approach. Thanks

New(ish) firmware on HPs website, dated 13th December 2010. Anyone tried it? HP LaserJet P2055 Printer series*-* HP LaserJet Firmware Update Utility - HP Business Support Center (P2055dn) On a side note, im getting another weird problem with these printers. Every so often when a print is sent, nothing happens, when you try to print later, the previous document comes out instead? Switching on/off sorts it out, tried replacing the drivers on our print server but no joy.

H: is specified in the AD account for their home drive, pointing to \\server\users\students\intakeyear\username, this maps fine and works as a drive. My Documents is currently redirecting to the UNC path via group policy - this works fine. However, im still having the problem on my test user, H: not being mapped/ready when the redirection of my documents (via group policy) to H: takes place during logon. You say that it should already be prioritised before that and should work - is there anything that could be slowing it down or interferring? There is a logon script that maps some other drives, but it doesnt touch H:. The only other option I can think of is to replace all the Default User's with a 'my documents' thats already set to H:\, turning off the redirect and wiping all the exisiting local user profiles from pcs/laptops

Clients XP SP3 DCs 2003 (not R2) Im trying to get a test user to have their My Documents redirected to H: The reason for this, rather than UNC, is that ive read some programs (Adobe Premiere in particular) work better with a drive letter rather than UNC. When the user logs in, I get an error in event logs "Failed to perform redirection...the system cannot find the specified path" which I think is happening because the drive is not being mapped before the rediction happens, sometimes (the drive is mapped in my computer when fully logged in) Updating the Shell Folders in registry after logon doesnt actually redirect the My Documents live (guessing it would work after another logon but thats no good). Any ideas how to prioritise the mapped drive before the redirection or a workaround?

Just bought 3 P2055dn's (£230 + £80 cashback!) and already have another thats got this issue, although it wasnt being reported by staff until recently :S I take it the firmware here (march 2010) doesnt fix it? Any ideas how long has this one been in beta? Is it purely to fix this problem? Thanks

Doh! Seems a switch reboot solved it :mad: Only once everything else had been exhausted! Double check Windows Updates - any recent ones causing the problem? Nope TCP registry mods, specifically New registry entry for controlling the TCP Acknowledgment (ACK) behavior in Windows XP and in Windows Server 2003 and the above tip from Jon. Various driver versions Different locations in school Different switches Different cables Firmware update on core + workstation switches - this obviously fixed it since a reboot is needed after updating, but I just had a thought while one was updating, ill try rebooting another and it worked! Not too sure what actually caused the slow down, as switches arent my forté but annoyed I didnt try one of the simpler things that you always tell other people to try first! Lesson learnt.

EDIT: Could someone rename the thread to Slow file copy from Server 2003 SP2 to XP SP3, thanks Hi, Having a bit of trouble finding out the cause of this, here is the background info: XP SP3 Clients (latest intel network driver - PRO 100 VE onto LAN) Server 2003 SP2 (Intel 1000 MT onto SAN, Broadcom NetXtreme 1000 onto LAN) On the XP Client, browse to server share \\server\share\ and copy file.exe (nvidia drivers, around 75MB) from the share to local desktop hard drive, copies 75MB in a few seconds - great. Rename the file on the XP machine to avoid duplication, try to copy the file back to same file share and it takes 8-10minutes. On the server, if I make a copy of the file within the SAN drive itself, it copies instantly, so no trouble here. If I also log into the server and browse to \\server\share from itself, its all near instant. Copying from the server share to my workstation (gigabit) results in the file being copied in about 2seconds. So clearly not a sending problem from the servers point of view. Why is it taking a few seconds to read from the file share and 10minutes to copy back to a machine on 100Mbit? Ive tried updating drivers, disabling Large Send Offload on the server (as directed elsewhere), removing network teams, server & client restarts, none of this has worked. Network switches are all recently replaced, HP Procurve's, takes 10minutes if the school is full with 500 PCs and laptops in use and is taking 10minutes today with just one or two people in school. This is duplicated across all our 2003 servers (all SP2) All things seem to point to OS/driver related, but im not sure what is the culprit! Help?

Another way is to extract IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe (or IE8-WindowsServer2003-x86-ENU.exe) with winrar/7zip to a folder where you will find inetres.adm. You can then add this to group policy via the usual 'add template' method.
