I have a Windows Server 2008 enterprise 32bit, it used to be a DC then was demoted. All good so far, it is now a file server the problem is I cant remove roles or services, it remove them reboots and says reverting back. It then tries to remove the role again and follows the same path, it does this 3 times then say it can not do it again and reboots. Also I cant update the server all updates fail, cant install software etc. The server runs people can access there files fine. Is there anyway of doing a system repair, to check files are present and correct folders have correct permissions etc, I dont really want to do fresh install if I can help it.

We have an exchange server version 2010 which is joined to a 2003 R2 DC. the problem is and its my fault I deleted the computer name in users/Computers. I readed it no problem but the exchange server say it cant find and domain controllers. What I want to know is when you right click the name of the exchange computer and go to member of what should I expect to see in there. What should it be a member of.

Ok I have now installed Server 2012, I have installed Hyper-v and setup and replicated a 2003 DC. Is there anyway of testing the new server before I dcpromo the old one for good so to speak. The school is still running off the old server, but the new 2012 DC seems to have replicated over users computers etc. I need to see if I can login to the new server and drive mapping is ok and programs run.

I have in school 2 DC's, these are old and full of problems, so I have bought a new server for the school. What I want to do is install a new Server new name etc, the have 2 DC to replace the old servers I will not replicate the servers but copy over users computers etc. So my question is how? I have created a new forest on the 2012 server with a name xxx.int, so now I want to add DC1 and DC2 but I cant figure how to do this there seems to be no option for add DC to exsisting forest etc. Please help kind people.

Thanks all, the company that was supposed to have resolved the DNS issues are on-line as I type so hopefully they will resolve that part, thanks for now.

How to I get it to replicate if I cant upgrade to a DC.

Get some DNS issues, which was supposed to be fixed by an engineer yesterday.

Let me explain again may have put it wrong. We have a DC running 2003 R2 server standard, this server is 7 years old now so I have bought a new HP Server installed Server 2012 on this box, joined it to the 2003 domain all good so far. I then added role AD DC on the 2012 server, it then asks to promote this server to a domain controller, this is when I hit the problem. In the end this will be the new DC server the old one will be trashed.

Yes I want to replace the 2003 server with this one so it will become the new DC. The 2003 server is already at 2003 functionality both Domain and Forest level. when I try and raise the 2012 server I get this error. Verification of replica failed, An active directory domain controller for the domain xxxxxxxxx cannot be contacted. Even though I have joined this domain already, with this server.

Log on to the schema master as a member of the Enterprise Admins, Schema Admins, and Domain Admins groups. Insert the Windows Server 2008 DVD into the CD/DVD drive. Copy the content of the \sources\adprep folder to an Adprep folder on the schema master. Open a command prompt, and then change directories to the Adprep folder. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: adprep /forestprep (Optional) If you plan to install a read-only domain controller (RODC) in any domain in the forest, type the following command, and then press ENTER: adprep /rodcprep Allow the operation to complete, and then allow the changes to replicate throughout the forest before you prepare any domains for a domain controller that runs Windows Server 2008. Domain Schema preparation After you prepare the forest, you need to prepare any domain for which you plan to install a domain controller that runs Windows Server 2008. yes its when I type in the ip address of the server it can't find it, it does if i put in the server name.

Ok I removed DNS re installed but it brought back all the old records, so its in the same state.

Because if I do nslookup for that server then it says it does not exist.

We have 2 Dcs both have DNS, 1 is messed up. What is the best way to remove the DNS service and re setup from scratch. Is it by manage server remove DNS role?
