Just felt compelled to post to the forum that I am now well on the road to recovery but to make others aware that this flu can strike anyone completely unaware. Just after Christmas (about the 27th) I started feeling unwell with 'man flu'. Days later I was in hospital very, very unwell with pneumonia, c-difficile and a couple of "unspecified" viruses to top things off. Several days of some very strong antibiotics, a lot of love and care from my family and an excellent health-care team, I started to improve. I make no bones that I was told I was very unwell and possibly at one point, only a few hours from not making it. Fortunately, the condition was diagnosed quickly, and the right drugs were administered in a timely manner. I'm out of hospital now, feeling a lot better, but have a bit of a haul to get back to health. I am still coming to terms with what happened, and am completely knocked over as to how fatigued I am. Even brushing my teeth in the morning takes it out of me. I would urge you all to get yourself vaccinated. I am a 46 year old bloke, generally in good health, I'm not the picture of fitness, but I'm not someone you would consider "at risk" either. Maybe I was unlucky, feeling a bit run down at the wrong time of year, but I'm going to ensure I am vaccinated every year from now. Thank you for reading and I can honestly say how pleased I am to be amongst you still. I wish you all health and well-being.

No, I'm definitely asking about replication.

I had two new machines to add to our domain/network. They had slightly different names to the machines they were replacing, in that they had a hyphen in the name; I disconnected the old machines, deleted their names from AD, plugged in the new machines, renamed them to the names the old machines had, restarted them and then checked AD again to see if all was well. The 'new' machines with the correct names were showing (as I'd previously deleted the 'old' names, I presumed that the fact that they were again showing was proof the new machines had succesfully joined with their revised names?) Hope that makes sense? Is that all I needed to do? Someone here said something about replicating but I thought AD did that automagically? How can I check it replicated?

So, let me get this straight, if I pay circa £300, I get full versions of the software I want to use for 'evaluation' purposes? In truth, I guess, I am not 'evaluating' the software per se, I will be using it for 'personal progression' and would want it to do what it would otherwise do in a production/enterprise environment, but at home, and on an ongoing basis at that! So long as I keep up a Technet subscription, I presume it is OK to continue in this way?

To be honest, I'm not really interested in exams and certification as by the time I'm ready to use it, there'll have been something new in place and my qualification will mean jack. No, this is for personal progression only, merely with a view to understanding MS Server and associated software better for whatever I go on to do with said knowledge.

I presume full life span versions are expensive as eval versions keep getting mentioned? Apologies, know nothing about the cost of these things at this stage. I do wonder how an individual would go about 'training' yourself over a period of a few months if you only get a short evaluation time.

Thanks for the replies folks, just a couple of things. 1. I would like full versions of the software - cheapest way to get this is? Technet? 2. Would prefer to not involve employer as there is a always a prerequisite to that sort of arrangement, I'd rather go it alone, obviously if the cost isn't prohibitive.

According to that article, users can still change their desktop pictures, albeit a log out/login will reset it back to what it should be. The method I linked to means that despite what a user does, they cannot change the picture no matter what. We found that if the users could change their background, they would, and kids were wasting lesson time searching out suitable pictures to do so, in turn storing nonsensensical pictures in their userspace, taking up space. Preventing them from changing the picture initially saw as much time wasted trying to figure out how to do it, but once it was realised they couldn't, they gave up.

I want to get myself up to speed with Server 2008 R2, but it will have to be at a personal level as I don't think anyone is going to pay for me to go on course and the like! So, as an individual, how could I go about this? In essence, I want to set up my own network/domain (I have the kit to do this at home) and then learn how to configure the server, administer Active Directory (GPO's etc) and perhaps Exchange. I know jack about setting up an outfit in this way, so I am asking here how I might go about it. As I say, I have the kit at home to be able to do it (fairly hefty tower PC, couple of laptops I can log into the domain on), but no other resources such as software, manuals etc. Licensing? Advice, guidance, help!

I don't normally pick up on spelling errors, as I realise we all make typos, however, "cources" [sic] is spelt 'courses'. Would hate for you to be rejected for an application onto a course or even a job application in which you mentioned various courses you'd been on because your spelling came under scrutiny.

Thanks folks, it appears it was the PSU. Changed it over and bench tested the machine which has been stable for a good 48 hours now. Some good reminders of troubleshooting methods though, pleased to say it all came flooding back!

I've found out a bit more info - the reason thus far that we have been unable to use it, is because the 64bit version doesn't support some of our older printers, i.e. Laserjet 4 Plus (yes, I know...) So we need a driver that runs under a modern 64bit OS that supports somewhat older printers....

We are looking to move our TS from 2003 to 2008, but one thing is holding us back. A universal driver for HP printers that will run under 2008. HP apparently don't support such, so I'm told. Unless someone out there knows different?

It's been a long time since I built/troubleshooted a PC as I've moved into different areas of responsibility which has taken me away from the basics, so I'm just looking for a troubleshooting memory jog on this one. Have a new built PC here, keeps restarting itself at random intervals. Most likely cause? PSU, mainboard or something else?

We are being asked to survey our site for wi-fi (we have limited wi-fi at present as the school is served very well via cable). One phrase that is being bantered about is "meshed wi-fi", and whilst I've looked up the terminology on Wiki, I'm not sure I fully undertsand the principle. Off the back of that, can anyone suggest what sort of hardware would form such a network? Are we talking basic access points, or more sophisticated hardware? Thanks.

It's the pedestrians who often get it when the car goes round a corner at any speed. 6 inches of snow sliding off a car roof straight into pedestrians standing kerbside waiting to cross. Not funny, potentially dangerous if said snow is solid ice.

Nothing to really speak about at 5pm last night when I drew the curtains - went to pick up my wife from work at 7:20pm, walked out the front door to be greeted by a good 2" of snow on the car! Doesn't look like much has fallen overnight here, but we are forecast a lot more later today. Temperature is due to hit -9 or -10 on Friday night, with a daytime swing of 17 degrees to +8 on Saturday. We were just saying, imagine if it was +2 or +3 degrees here now, and we had the same shift in temperature, we'd all be getting out shorts out as we'd be hitting the high teens! The weather is mad.
