We are looking for a system for SMS notification of any network alerts we get. Our system has monitoring solutions on/in it, but these only display via a screen to let us know if (for example) an access point isn't responding. Great whilst we are here... What we need is an SMS alerter for out of hours, that costs nothing to run or implement Or as near as. Any ideas please? Just as a footnote, we have ruled out being notified via email due to some staff not being able to receive email on their mobiles.

oh gawd, sorry fellas, didn't mean to rub it in, but it was a pleasant bit of news after my last place which 'commanded' you take time off and took it out of your entitlement, and made me take owed holiday as part of my notice period.

Just found out that my new employer gives me Christmas off without it being taken from my annual leave entitlement! Means I have an extra 3 days leave which I can carry over to next year. Add that to my already generous leave allowance, and the extended school holidays that we get in private education, and I'm a happy bunny. Thank you very much nicely!

Does anyone know of a utility such as HP Jetadmin for Dell network printers? I have a few 1320 printers on the network I would like to 'manage' in the same way as my HP's, or can Jetadmin look after the Dell's as well? TIA

They are a mix of HP and random non-specific towers. What were you thinking?

We have remote sites here which are using 2X to connect back to our Windows Server 2003 R2 terminal servers. We have separate issues with our TS's in that they are locking up (memory issues) which is causing the thinclients to lose connection to the farm. This entails us having to go out to the remote sites and re-connect the machines. Is there anything in the configuration of our thinclients that we can 'tweak' to enable automatic re-connection when our TS's go down? We are still using ThinclientOS 6.0 (we can't upgrade due to hardware constraints). Ideally of course, we need to sort out our TS's - an upgrade to Server 2008 R2 would be good, but the problem is, HP don't have a printer driver which a) supports all our quite old printers b) is 64bit, so we are at stalemate with that route. My first priority is to find a way to auto re-connect our thinclient machines in the event the servers go down. Anyone?

Indeed, the side (or electronic paddle type keys) are seemingly far more accurate, as the timing is usually spot on; dits are spaced apart correctly and dahs are all the same length. Obviously, this relies on the operator accuracy too! He said he got the watch off eBay. It is also retro in design, having a blank face which displays red numerals on the press of a button.

Looking for some sub-£100 toner and probe recommendations, and mainstream suppliers! Looked on CPC, but found nothing suitable. Just need something fairly basic to tone cables when tracing where they go. Any ideas folks?

One of our course tutors said that decoding morse becomes something you listen to rather than write down (although the latter is something you do initially of course!) and he hears whole words rather than letters now, as he recognises the 'rhythym'. He even has a wristwatch which beeps the time in Morse! I now have to get the cost of a decent morse key past Senior Management (a.k.a the wife)! One thing I didn't realise, is that a lot of Morse heard in films, is actually nonsense, and only there for effect.

There is a program installed on the Mac that deals with Keychain problems. The user will need admin access to run it. I can't for the life of me remember where it is, or what it is called though (sorry) but you will find it in a sub folder of your 'programs' folder, maybe called "utilities"? I think it is simply called "Keychain"... ? As that user, you access it, and remove the relevant keychain entry. The problem you describe is often caused by the login password being changed by someone other than the user, i.e a network admin changing the password when the password has been forgotten. There is info about this on Google. Just search for "change user keychain" or similar.

Quickest way I find, is to simply disconnect all your mapped network drives, then insert the USB drive. Usually find a mapped drive has taken the drive allocation, and the USB stick therefore cannot be assigned a drive letter (as someone else pointed out further up). If you can get the stick recognised this way, then you can simply assign it a new drive letter, reconnect all your drives, and off you go. 3rd party software such as USBDLM is great for the longer term though.

Foundation Level isn't hard - it's not walk off the street and pass though, you do need to know your beans! I did a 2 day course at a radio club an hours drive each way from me, so I was defintely committed to it! Got all the kit, ready to go, just got to play around with a couple of hundred feet of wire now!

Got to wait a few days for the result (got 24 out of 25 questions correct on the exam) to filter through from the Examiner to the RSGB to OFCOM. You apply for your callsign online these days, and can choose your own if the one you want is still available. Got all the kit, and the mic has now been connected to the rig as it was hanging on a hook 'teasing' me up till now!

I passed my Radio Amatuer exam at Foundation Level yesterday, realising a 20+ year 'dream' of becoming a licensed 'ham' Just blowing my trumpet here in the hope someone appreciates the level of effort etc that has to be put in, as I received nothing but blank stares when I shared my good news in the office this morning! Philastines. Going to start learning Morse Code next, for the challenge if nothing else
