oh is that the valid user / admin user bit? at the moment its valid user = andy admin user = root
-
just a standard user I made when i installed. and if i make that a secondary member of www-data that should work?
-
yeah there's a www-data group. the permissions on www are root root I think I see now. i need to change them to root www-data

i had wu-ftpd before but i had the same problem. in the end i just made it so i could ftp in with root but samba share mapped to a drive is better. I dont get why the groups thing didnt work.

im sure this is simple but i cant find any instructions that explain it, simply enough, or at all. If this was windows it'd be a 2 second job.... Ive set up samba & shared /var/www for my windows user. connected in windows, mapped the drive. thats all working. the share is set to writeable and browseable. cept i cant write. Im fairly certain it's because my corresponding user on the debian etch doesnt have permission to write in /var/www i've tried adding myself to the root or www-data secondary group in webmin but thats not working. I dont really know what Im doing here. thx for any help

i've figured out the problem. we've always, in the past installed sims using simsinst.exe and everything worked. what i realise is the need to run simsinfrastructure setup beforehand nowadays.

same here, but we have a NM who does purchasing, strategy, interfacing with teacher management

I can't help thinking that the teachers laptop seemed faster before I made 2.5gb/5000 userarea files available offline.... anyone else noticed this phenomenon?

we using an fully patched sp2 windows xp on parallels desktop on a macbook. added to domain, installed office 2003, installed sims, sims works ok but lesson monitor complains about msinet.ocx being missing which is seems to be. where does this file come from? I download this and comdlg32.ocx from a random website stuck them in system32, registered them. it gets as far as synchronise "writing options to SQL server" but errors with requested operation could not be performed.

i dont know how good that would be, the trouble is its an installer to delete files. different machines may need different files deleting...
-
afaik there's the windows components, the fonts and a program to delete pre dot net components. the first two bits are ok. but the pre dot net stuff. I think we might have some laptops/workstations that had pre dot net sims on, but im not prepared to check all 100ish of them just to find a few. there must be another way to do this. if there are some files I can check for in the login script I can automake a list of computers that need doing. incidently what happens if the files dont get removed?

I can do that its only dual channel pc3200 bout 40ish quid for a gb.

Sent it back got a new one. Works great now. got wow in high res. I notice it tends to jerk a bit when the frame rate drops. 1GB ram not enough now?

anyone ever used proper anti-vandal keyboards in schools? we've seen some shiny ones u can bolt down with unremovable keys on the net but they looked jolly expensive. cheers

cool thx. however ive simplified it somewhat. strip.vbs Set objArgs = WScript.Arguments WScript.Echo trim(cstr(objArgs(0))) in login script bat rem log mac addresses del \\backup\logs$\lapmacs\%computername%.log /q >nul for /f "tokens=2 delims=:" %%a in ('ipconfig /all ^| find "physical" /i ') do ( for /f %%b in ('cscript //nologo \\server1\netlogon\strip.vbs %%a') do ( echo %computername% > \\backup\logs$\lapmacs\%%b.log echo %%b >> \\backup\logs$\lapmacs\%computername%.log ) )

we have fujitsu computers with weak front panelling. (they've changed the design now) our tech department makes us replacement (stronger) panels on their laser cutting machine that we glue back on. we replace a fair number of mice & keyboards, mostly kbs. generally its supply teachers and certain other teachers it happens to more often.

i just got a new his x1950pro graphics card as a replacement for a died x850xt (they dont make it anymore) when i put it in it complains before the post screen about the pci power cable not being plugged in. tried both my pci-e power cables and the power adapter that comes with the card to no avail. i notice the card manual states a 450 watt psu with 30 amps on the 12v rail. I have a 480w psu but to my horror according to the gumfp on the side of the psu the output is only 28a on the 12v rail. (ive discovered on a website the old x850xt uses upto 25a on the 12v hmm) is this a likely explanation as to why the card seems not to work? cheers

cool that seems to be the way forward.
