shared start menus that only pupils get thru group policy and only administrators and system has write access to. icons disappear and sometimes end up pointing at some random computer instead of c:\ used to happen with word or ie but has been happening a lot recenltly with dreamweaver. is it the system user causing this? can I remove system rights? ~Andy

ive been playing lord of the rings online, dare I say it, I like it almost as much as warcraft. on Snowborn with a 42 hobbit burg called Ferdwolf I think I might not go back to wow to till the next expansion. :-o :-D

ive got a couple of scripts that runs as scheduled tasks that uses down from LS Tools Freeware at 4pm del loggedin.txt for /f %%a in ('type comp.log') do ( for /f %%b in ('net view ^| find "\\%%a" /I ') do ( if exist %%b\c$ ( pslist %%b | find "explorer" /I && echo %%b >> loggedin.txt if errorlevel 1 down %%b /P /Q))) run and shutsdown any machine not logged on. comp.log is a list of computername prefixes we use at 6pm for /f %%a in ('type loggedin.txt') do ( down %%a /P /F /Q ) blat loggedin.txt -to andy@domain -server exchange -f academic\administrator -q -s "forced these computers to shutdown at 6pm" runs and forces any machines that were previously logged on off and emails me the list

no actually im considering replacing 4 x 512 with 2 x 1gb. my reasoning being 4 sticks seems to generate a lot of heat. when i only had 2 sticks being dual channel they were much further apart. my case has temp sensors wires which i have stuck between my pairs of ram. normal running temp is around 37C which rises upto 45C when i play games. Obviously they're being utilized a lot more. lord of the rings online for instance makes ram usage go up to at least 1.4gb. before i bought a one of these Scythe Karma bay fan to get more air in towards my ram (its open space between this and my ram) the memory temp would get upto 50. past 50 things started crashing. and yet my other system temps seem pretty good (idleish ~ web browsing) 30C CPU 25C SYS 38C PWM 36C Graphics card 28C HD0 22C HD1 its possibly that I need faster fans. All my fans are quiet 800rpm. I have now 3 case fans 2 (air in) on the front and 1 (air out) on the back. the other thing im considering is replacing the stock fan on the scythe with a 1600rpm one. that should make more difference.

my mobo uses pc3200 memory (DDR400/333). which is rapidly becoming obsolete and double the price of slightly newer more available memory. Can i put newer types of memory in that are cheaper? will DDR2, which seems to be the next step up, work with a DDR mobo?

that annoys me too. that smacks of projects being directed by non-technical managers and coded by programmers that have never worked in a school or had to install anything more than 1 at a time. and prob think we have like 10 computers each. its good business to find out your customers needs.... oh wait are we really their customers, or the government. we're just the poor saps that get to figure a way out of this mess.

my first pc games were F19 stealth fighter by microprose released in 1988 my parents didnt and to a degree still dont believe in computers as entertainment devices. There were no consoles for us growing up as kids. My dad only relented and got an amstrad PC2086 (Intel 8086 CPU, 8 MHz, 640 KB RAM, VGA Graphics) when he needed to do stuff for work. we had to run windows off floppy disks!!

I started doing that but when i set the permissions in the permiss bit if kept coming up with mycomputername\users and refused to let me use any domain\group things. so i wasnt sure i could trust that actually tried it today and it let me add domain\users gonna trial it tomorrow with some kids with the different methods.
-
normal users, pupils, dont have write rights to the c:\prog files. so either we go and change the permissions on each computer or we give the user account elevated permissions.

seems a bit stupid that we cant have a test account. How are we supposed to know its working properly beforehand? First time we set it up, we made a mistake somewhere and 100 kids had to abandon their tests. here's what I've done, I think it'll work, cant see any flaws created an account esm with domain admin rights. placed it in a OU beneath normal kids (ie heavily restricted) changed the shell to be the promissor software this should mean normal restrictions apply (no desktop icons etc) but they have rights to write to promissor folder (domain admin rights) but no explorer shell to breach network with task man already disabled in ctrl alt del dialog (so no loading explorer) usb sticks dont seem to work either. we're gonna room at a time logon thru abtutor software. so they wont know the password. how does this sound?

tried different make cdr's. they dont work properly in the laptop afterwards either. mp3 data cdrs work fine. we took off nero and didnt put it back on. using media player to burn. thats a thought. aspi. we uninstalled nero v7 and didnt put it back on but it still kept happening in media player. I havent been able to look at event viewer cos I havent had direct access to the laptop yet. no other burning software. another thought to check if bought audio cds work or not. also try disabling imapi xp burning service
-
I updated some stuff a few weeks ago on my gf's laptop and recently its stopped burning audio cds correctly. naturally the finger points at me. Im in trouble. We've tried everything I can think of to no avail. it seems to be something underlying. its a compaq r3000 intel laptop the problem: mp3 > audio cds burn without errors but they dont playback properly. choppy sound on the laptop and dont work at all in a stereo. Worked fine a few months ago. this happened with both nero and windows media. mp3 data works fine. tried: (in no particular order) uninstalled nero 7 reinstall windows media 11 reinstall k-lite codec pack removed wireless drivers I installed b4 reinstalled sound drivers updated cdrw firmware tried different cd-rs checked DMA on IDE controllers cant remember anything else....anyone got any other ideas I can try? thx

make sure you get a specific 'cable' router as adsl ones wont work.
-
my answer is that kerberos v5 in IE7 is incompatible with ISA2004. In order to stop all the anonymous connections you have to disable "Enabled Windows Integrated Authentication" but that option is omitted from group policy but i found an adm file here: http://www.pragmaticutopia.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=90 this thread details the issue more: http://forums.isaserver.org/Proxy_authentication_problem/m_2002033963/tm.htm

i think its a side effect of this: if ISA Server is unable to authenticate the user for whatever reason, that means that no credentials at all are presented to the ISA Server, then any request from that user will be denied by the first rule requiring user authentication regardless of whether its an allow or deny rule
-
the 1st rule (banned) wasnt an anonymous access rule.
-
(sp3) I've got random users appearing as anonymous. It happens on win xp clients and not on 2k clients furthermore my first rule is a "banned rule" that denies access to members of an arbitrary security group. for NO APPARENT REASON, anonymous matches this rule. require all users to authenticate has to be off in order for anonymous to work disabling banned rule causes anonymous to find the rule (#9) I want it to use.

nevermind i installed a completely different one, copied the settings from squid from that broke box and it all magically works. Im quite surprised tbh. :-)
-
on the workstation putting it in a workgroup and then back on the domain fixes it.
-
Ive been asked to ask why 3 or 4 computers a day are randomly falling off the domain, for no apparent reasons..... this happened to anyone else?
-
what about a cheap broadband router, would that work?
-
i cant see my boss going for that at all. too expensive. we dont want to route appletalk, just internet access to an open proxy we have on the windows network. if its going to be as 'hard' as linux might as well use that. I can install debian, ok although im not sure about having 2 network cards. I have trouble making things with a million options in a config file like (squid) work. my methods of randomly changing stuff until it works tends not work too well on those kinds of software But i think Id rather not make a mess of something costing a grand. :-S can we do this sort of thing with smoothwall?
-
cool. checking....hmm how easy are they to set up? as hard as linux stuff? there seems to be like 30 different models which dont all seem to have firewalls...
