  1. might be useful for IT/computing lessons: you can legally download episodes of an american computing show called "computer chronicles". some of the episodes are like 20 years old! http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Acomputerchronicles&sort=-%2Freviews%2Finfo%2Favg_rating%3B-%2Freviews%2Finfo%2Fnum_reviews e.g. this one

  4. our lea were supposed to consolidating technican pay across the county, since september, but nothing seems to have happened. I'm basically senior technican being the only 'do-er' to have stayed for so long(11 years or so). however on paper i'm still the same as the technican who joined 6 months ago. i can never remember my scale, but i work pro rata having refused full time. now i get 1k in my bank per month, which probably equates to about £14k full time.
  5. i'd have preferred to be using something more usual like a NAS or arcserver but no one wanted to buy such a thing. i expect i'd still be doing it manually if i hadnt thought up such a cunning system.
  6. cmdline driven winrar and some big hard drives in a standalone server. we use a fujitsu p4 workstation and rar user areas into individual archvies that are differential backups. scheduled to run everynight. sends me an email with the results. other backups are put on this server too. when we want to do our offsite backup we just copy the contents of the drive to a usb exernal harddrive.
  7. you should try and get it published as "comment" in IT Week. It would fit right i I reckon.
  8. not as far as I can see. a computer set can contain either, a computer ip address, an ip range or a subnet. our uncatered scenario is surely shortsightedness on the part of microsoft. on the other hand if someone clever could make a plugin for isa that allowed easy room management a vast amount of money could be made
  9. i use a csv file created from sims, modified and a vbscript i wrote myself. I had to rewrite it last year to add to active directory, which was quite troublesome.
  10. i dont know about isa 2000 but in 2004 access on a per computer basis is purely based on ipaddress. which obviously wouldnt work with dhcp :-\
  11. final fantasy xi. i've been playing since january. it's only about £7 / month and you can get the main game and the 2 expansions off amazon for about £22 total. it's huge. what with updates. it's taking up about 6gb now! There there are about 11 jobs u can have. you can change between them whenever you like and if you get 1 to level 18 you can have two at once. some of the jobs are advanced ones which you can only get at level 30 and often u need high level help (e.g. lvl75). Anyway the bottom line is that even if you do a job for a bit and decide you'd rather try something else the time spent isnt wasted. you may find you need that job again later. Some jobs go together better than others. I like the partying mechanics too. Once you get to level 12 or so. experience becomes very slow. the only way round this is to join a party and fight much harder monsters for up to 6 or 7 times the experience. Joining a party is relatively easy. u just put up a "flag" which makes you appear on a list of people searching for parties. You dont have to beg and you dont have to know loads of people. people pick you, anonymously.
  12. i had an idea on how you can control internet access when using DHCP. it's sort of an extension to the scripts i've written for controlling our own access in isa 2004. we only use dhcp on laptops. make a hidden share on the isaserver, say logs$ in the login script make a line: ipconfig | find "IP Address" > \\isaproxy\logs$\%computername%.txt this will mean everytime someone logs on a file will be created containing the ip address. unfortunately what i've thought up isnt foolproof and will own work if the class is logged on. basically combine the room management script i made in the scripts forum with the individual pc management. i.e. when you turn a room on, the script will have to add machines to a computerset dynamically before the computerset is added to the rule. You can find the machine names from the names of the log files if you use standard prefixes for machinenames. and then go thru the list and get the ipaddresses. add the computers to the set and add the set to the rule. it's a bit of a nightmare tbh and you could never do it manually. but asfaras i can see it's the only way. it could be made a bit easier if you can interrogate the dns server thru vbscript. it would be more foolproof then and no need to bother about log files. i expect it's possible somehow but i dont know.
  13. the ip log files are created from a line in the login script that says: ipconfig | find "IP Address" > \\isaproxy\logs$\ips\%computername%.txt this script is called from a previous page in the form rooms.asp?room= where is a computer name prefix. Some knowledge of asp would be needed to alter this for other use. <% Const ForReading = 1 dim root set root = CreateObject("FPC.Root") set arrayx = root.GetContainingArray set computersets = arrayx.RuleElements.ComputerSets set bannedpcset = computersets.item("DeniedComputers") set bannedpcsetcomputers = bannedpcset.computers if isempty(request.querystring("room")) then passedvar=split(request.querystring("pc"),"-") tobemanaged=passedvar(0) else tobemanaged=request.querystring("room") end if 'response.write(bannedpcsetcomputers.count) if not isempty(request.querystring("submit")) then if (request.querystring("submit") = "ban") then for each itemx in request.querystring("pc") ipaddress=lookupipaddress(itemx) ipaddress = Replace(ipaddress, vbCr, " ") trimmedip = rtrim(ltrim(ipaddress)) ref=bannedpcsetcomputers.add(itemx,trimmedip) next else ' remove from banned for each itemx in request.querystring("pc") ref=bannedpcsetcomputers.remove(itemx) next end if arrayx.save end if dim fso, f,fc folderspec="e:\logs\ips" set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set f = fso.GetFolder(folderspec) set fc = f.files banned = "" Unbanned = "" for each f1 in fc pcname=split(f1.name,".") if left(pcname(0), len(tobemanaged))= tobemanaged then if bannedlookup(pcname(0)) then banned = banned & "," & pcname(0) else unbanned = unbanned & "," & pcname(0) end if end if next function bannedlookup(lookupname) for each itemz in bannedpcsetcomputers if itemz.name = lookupname then bannedlookup = true exit function end if next bannedlookup= false end function function lookupipaddress(pcnamez) set gso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") filepath="e:\logs\ips\" & pcnamez & ".txt" set myfile = gso.opentextfile(filepath, forreading) ipaddressline=myfile.readline tempx=split(ipaddressline,":") lookupipaddress=tempx(1) end function %> <br /> <!--<br /> .style6 {<br /> font-size: 36px;<br /> font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;<br /> color: #003300;<br /> font-weight: bold;<br /> }<br /> .style7 {font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif}<br /> --><br /> PC Internet control Fine Room Management for <% response.write (tobemanaged) %> </pre><table border="1" width="100%"> Unbanned <% unbanned=split(unbanned,",") for each item in unbanned response.write "" & item & " " next %> Banned <% banned=split(banned,",") for each item in banned response.write "" & item & " " next %> </
  14. i had an idea about doing that but we havent got around to trying it yet. basically a webpage that writes instructions into a folder on the website and an application on our network that watches the folder for instructions and uploads/downloads files accordingy. You could allow people to download/upload files without them having direct access to their user area and keeping authentication. it wouldnt be very fast i expect but thats not necessarily a bad thing.
  15. indeed. didnt notice that one here.
  16. also i have a scheduled vbs script that removes all the computer sets from the pupil rule at the end of lessons and after lunch sub controlcomputers() dim root set root = CreateObject("FPC.Root") dim array dim policyrules dim computersets dim pupilrule set array = root.GetContainingArray set policyrules = array.ArrayPolicy.PolicyRules set pupilrule = policyrules.item("Pupil Access") set computersets = pupilrule.SourceSelectionIPs.ComputerSets for each blag in computersets wscript.echo blag.Name pupilrule.SourceSelectionIPs.computersets.removespecified blag.Name next pupilrule.save CheckError wscript.echo "Done!" end sub sub CheckError() if Err.Number <> 0 then wscript.echo "An error occurred: 0x" & hex(err.number) & " " & err.Description err.clear end if end sub controlcomputers
  17. this works if you have computer sets for rooms. (need static ip addresses this to work) been making these for a while. just got them working. to combat lost time from taking phone calls to turn the internet on/off. The idea being the teachers do it themselves. You have to give them admin rights on the isa server. Not an ideal solution but as long as they dont go near the actual pc will be fine. NB: this applies to a rule called pupil access which only applies to individuals (pupils) which have restricted access. index.asp enumerates the names of all the possible computer sets into a form. if len(blag.name) < 6 then excludes the builtin sets. anything you dont want appearing on the form you can just make the name longer than 6 chars. Any set currently set to 'on' has a ticked box. <% sub controlcomputers() dim root set root = CreateObject("FPC.Root") dim array dim policyrules dim computersets dim pupilrule set array = root.GetContainingArray set policyrules = array.ArrayPolicy.PolicyRules set pupilrule = policyrules.item("Pupil Access") set computersets = array.RuleElements.ComputerSets dim onsets set onsets = pupilrule.SourceSelectionIPs.ComputerSets dim found,tmp for each blag in computersets if len(blag.name) < 6 then found = false 'tmp = if setlookup(blag.name,onsets) then Response.write "" & blag.name & " " else Response.write "" & blag.name & " " end if end if next pupilrule.save CheckError 'wscript.echo "Done!" end sub sub CheckError() if Err.Number <> 0 then Response.write "An error occurred: 0x" & hex(err.number) & " " & err.Description err.clear end if end sub function setlookup(lookupname,lookinto) 'response.write "function start" & lookupname & " " for each item in lookinto if item.name=lookupname then 'response.write item.name & " true " setlookup = true exit function end if 'response.write item.name & " false " next setlookup = false end function %> <br /> <!--<br /> .style6 {<br /> font-size: 36px;<br /> font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;<br /> color: #003300;<br /> font-weight: bold;<br /> }<br /> .style7 {font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif}<br /> --><br /> Internet Room Management Ticked = Internet allowed in that room </pre><form action="process.asp" method="get"> <% controlcomputers %> </for process.asp removes everything and then adds the ticked boxes passed from the previous page. re-asks what is 'on' and lists the results. if you have a set that contains pcs that are always 'on' its easier to put it on a separate rule. <% sub processform() dim root set root = CreateObject("FPC.Root") dim array dim policyrules dim computersets dim pupilrule set array = root.GetContainingArray set policyrules = array.ArrayPolicy.PolicyRules set pupilrule = policyrules.item("Pupil Access") set computersets = pupilrule.SourceSelectionIPs.ComputerSets for each blag in computersets 'response.write blag.Name pupilrule.SourceSelectionIPs.computersets.removespecified blag.Name next for each itemx in request.querystring("room") pupilrule.SourceSelectionIPs.computersets.add itemx, fpcinclude 'response.write itemx next pupilrule.save CheckError response.write "Validating...access allowed at: " for each blagx in computersets response.write blagx.Name & " " next end sub sub CheckError() if Err.Number <> 0 then Response.write "An error occurred: 0x" & hex(err.number) & " " & err.Description err.clear end if end sub %> <br /> <!--<br /> .style6 {<br /> font-size: 36px;<br /> font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;<br /> color: #003300;<br /> font-weight: bold;<br /> }<br /> .style7 {font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif}<br /> --><br /> Internet Room Management Processed Ticked = Internet allowed in that room <% processform %>

  19. i've got mediawiki for inhouse documentation. pretty easy to set up... if i can do it.
