  3. Hi All, I need to move/copy all students home folder data from \\server\student data\intakeyear\username1 to \\server\student data\Yearx\username2 due to changing username from a mishmash to sims Id all data setup in csv file (Oldusername = Column A, newusername 2 Column B) Any idea how I can get a script to do this and move to the next line of the csv once one is complete etc ? Many thanks as always!
  4. Hi All, Does have a copy of AUM (The Free Active user management tool) I can have please I can't find a working download link Many thanks

  6. Hi all, Do you know of a way to set the default font & size in Excel and word 2010 ? All users have roaming profiles so need a way of putting in in all profiles I think? I have the adm templates for group policy but cant see anywhere to set this ? as always help much appreciated Many thanks
  7. Hi All, hope someone can turn my vision into life simply and quickly ! i want to point users to an rdp session which points to a group of VM's say for instance staffvm-01 going to staffvm-20 but how can i get this to happen... user1 sits at pc enters rdp session which points to say staffvm-01 logs in and starts working, user 2 sits down enters rdp session which also points to staffvm-01 can a script be run to see if someone is logged into vm1 and if so direct them to vm2 etc i.e. check to find the next available vm ? and log them into that one? hope this makes sense! many thanks in advance Ps i would envisage this type of workflow: if vm1 is logged in then call vm2 if vm2 logged in goto vm3 etc script needs to run every time someone attempts login.
  8. Hi everyone, this one is puzzling me so hope you can help.. i have setup server2012R2 Hyper-V, RDS & desktop collections etc. All working well but i need to point an rdp profile to the Desktop collection. Any idea where i can find the correct path? After authenticating on the web interface and selecting the remote desktop collection it asks you to save / open an rdp profile which appears to be generated per user. once you open it everything works as it should but I'm going to need to make the user experience as seamless as possible so will be booting direct to the remote desktop login screen so all the user needs to do is login as they would a normal domain pc. Hope this makes sense and i can't see what I'm missing here as a path to the vm collection must exist for the session to create a profile for that user to the collection. Many thanks in advance as always !
  9. @catwoman yes i have a few of the older units and they are very good for File shares not used the newer B1200i though
  10. I would be very interested in these for a TS / VDI deployment. would it support 200 concurrent connections ? (with the data aware tearing enabled)
  11. Hi there, You need to plan, plan & plan some more... find out what they need (not always easy I know) as they may not know themselves, Consider the lifespan of servers & OS (Always buy proper brands with business level cover. Remember whatever data is on the servers needs to be backed up. (I use Disk to Disk to Tape) look into Veeam or Backup Exec Depending on if you virtualise. Work out what roles each server will do and decide on required specs then add enough headroom for the future. Contact a MS reseller (Assuming your going to be using windows) to sort out licensing. Consider deployment of OS to Clients, security, infrastructure & switching etc. its a very very long list and i have only mentioned a tiny part of it. If you are not sure on anything (i don't know your background) I would recommend getting yourself a solutions provider to work with you. Hope that helps a little. Appreciate its vague but you haven't given much to work on.... Cheers
  12. Hi all, Sorry I'm ure this has probably been discussed before.... We are going live in a weeks time and all accounts are now provisioned staff are identified with (Staff) in the displayname and students are distinguished with (student) tutorgroup in their displayname. All users are in cloud (havn't bothered with AD sync as all users wanted to keep their original email username / address which differ from AD. can you tell me if I can hide students from searching for staff (all objects containing (staff) and also the quickest way to add all staff to a group and all student to a group based on their description? Many thanks in advance.

  14. Many thanks Will give it a go !
  15. Hi Thanks for that. Sadly that's the key i'm using to list the exceptions but it doesn't seems to Tick the actual "bypass for local addresses" box it just lists them in the exceptions box
  16. Hi there, Yes i'm using windows 8 to do this as the option is no longer visible for ie 10 under windows 7 / server 2008. Im actually using reg keys as well at a different level to ensure everything gets picked up. has always worked up till version 10 ! Thanks for getting back though !
  17. Hi All, Any help appreciated as always.... Since IE 10 for some reason the tick box for bypass proxy for local addresses is un-ticked even though the exceptions are specified. I have looked over the registry settings and all look ok is there something im missing ? does anyone know if their is a key to actually tick the box ?
  18. Thanks everyone for your feedback ! yes its in a school (big) and if i go down this road then it would be dedicated hardware for the VDI setup and the main servers would remain as they are... I will look into the nimble SANs as have heard a lot of good things about them.
  19. @Glennda many thanks for your advice. I will look into the IOPS needed and also look at the assessment tools available.. Appreciate your advice!
  20. Hi there, many thanks for your replies. @Roberto i agree and think this may well be the case. Glennda i am looking at 300 (to start with) concurrent clients, they will run office, Serif suite, internet access etc, As much as i would love to see them running DT software I wouldn't of thought it would handle it? Many thanks
  21. Hi all, We are at a point where its going to cost £110k + to replace a load of our old machines. I want to start investigating using old machines as thin clients connecting to a TS farm or looking at proper VDI Can you tell me what you do and give me an idea of what it's cost you ? i probably will have 60k to start with. Our server & network infrastructure is good so am not concerned about this but would like to know more about our options... Many thanks in advance
  22. I have this as well ! we have DNS scavenging setup and working, the issues do seem to be dns related though. i asked support to take a look and they weren't wanting to get involved, i guess thats fair enough to a point but in my view if the product works on dns (which it does) i would expect a "recommended / best practice doc kb or something) if i work it out i will make one and post it
  23. Hi All sorry i know this is an ongoing topic of late since ie 10 has arrived. i have a vb script set to run at startup which is hashregedit /s \\serverpath\setproxy.reg if i rund the said .reg file as an admin it works but the vb script runs with line 1 char 1 expected statement error any ideas? ps the .reg file contains proxy enable, proxy overide and proxy address keys as pointed out in other topics so i know the actual keys work. thanks in advance Richard
  24. Hi MrBios ! well personally i agree it comes down to need & choice. I want to segregate areas of the LAN to improve performance primarily the security benefit comes in as an additional definitive layer by giving the ability to effectively "hide" different devices / sections of the network from each other you are ensuring a more complete security structure throughout the Lan but by doing so your obviously adding an additional layer of management and complexity (depending on how its setup and also what the documentation includes) i have worked in a school with over 100 vlans. (in my view uber excessive) wherby admin printers were egregated from student printers!
