The thing is a SAN is just a term rather than a specific hardware platform. Back in the day Sans were all the rage and very very expensive but if we take the definition of a san it is storage attached to the network and presented typically via iscsi. Which these units all Do very well. its like everything you can spend as much or as little as you like but generally these days a well specified setup will work for thousands of users without any problems at all. BTW not being awkward just wanted to give my personal view for what its worth. In a school we need high availability and reliability but at a small cost this is where the synology / qnap platforms come in as they have a level of performance which is good enough for the setting. i wouldn't use them in a bank but will use them all day in a school, college and university even with 10,000+ users

Out of interest what SAN and switches are you using and for how many users ? (I'm really interested in how others have their storage setup) Cheers

We can't afford what's Deemed a "Proper" SAN so Also Synology RS3614XS+ been using for years and always worked exceptionally well for staff and Student Data. We use WD RE (Now "Gold") Data centre class disks. We use 10gbps Card connected to a standard 10gbps switch and use ISCSI to Present to our servers. Not saying its the best solution out there but works well for us. Planning on using Additional units for CSV to put our VM's on too (with SSD's) they also do High availability (Active + passive) which works well enough.

@markwilfan to begin with so did I lol. Ok the Silver Unifi switches are the ones I have. They do have an RJ45 Console port on the back (I'm 99% sure they all do but it maybe only a few models (I have most of the unifi range) will confim next week for you if I remember. I have never been a massive CLI user to be honest. I much prefer to see what I'm doing so the unifi controller is awesome for that they do have cli but not touched it yet. The Edge switch range are more advanced and do L3 whereas the unifi ones are L2. I purchased an edge router pro 8 port for the L3 routing. (yet to be configured) but looking online it seems very straightforward to setup. The other difference to note is the edge switch range do not talk to a unifi controller. Hope that helps

Hi Guys yes I'm using the Unifi range. The only Edge product I'm using is the Edge pro router (Yet to configure) but it should do all i need nicely according to the re-seller and the specs as it does full L3

Yes fully ubi now as of 3 weeks ago. 38 installed switches 70 x 10gbps uplinks incl SFP's for just under 20k ! incl 7 spare switches best thing I have done.

Hey i'm using them been installed just over 2 weeks. Been good on the whole had 3 dodgy ones which were RMA'd but the whole experience has been excellent. I personally don't see the point in having a really expensive "Core" with loads of resiliency. We are a really large school (1800 students) 200 staff etc and we just have a few spares in stock to allow for RMA time if anything goes wrong. I'm sure a lot of people would strongly disagree with me on the whole core switch thing but we are a school not a bank. downtime is annoying but really how long does it take to swap out a switch?? in my case 10 minutes. The bang per buck is outstanding on these and although only really just started with them to me its a no brainer. I wish I had done it years ago! one central managed console see and configure everything. its great.

Had 1 which refuses to adopt at all, one telling me its overheating and one which doesn't show in the dashboard at all. they are US-48 switches. Also got 2 of the us-16-xg which are intermittent link / no link

Thanks yes have found the issue is some faulty / intermittent switches RMA done and new ones on the way!

i can second Gbics.com are great never had an issue using their gbics with HP or netgear kit

Thought I would update you all.... I have taken the plunge and completed my install today. Verdict is good on the whole. I have 3/4 faulty switches out of 44 which is high but on the whole (so far all has been ok) kit seems well made in general and is easy to manage and use. lets see how well they hold up ! (Hopefully well and they last a long time !)

haha thanks all I'm known to be a bit slow but no i have tried reversing the polarity to no avail. one thing i noticed tho is if i put the fibre back the old core switch it works fine. i suspect its the "Compatible" SFP mods which are causing the problems but for no i working solution. i think I'm going to run new fibre in the summer though and will buy the proper sfp+ mods.

Yes new switches and new mods. both 1gbps and 10gbps fibre I'm told is all OM3 (some areas are working on 10gbps fine) distance is well below 200 mtrs. I'm told by the supplier they are compatible and according to the ubiquity support are known to work this is what's confusing me! all "should" be fine.....

Hi All, very strange this. Installing our new Ubiquity switches with new Microtik SFP's / SFP+ modules and am getting a lot of disconnects and some switches light up at one end but not the other (Activity light) Can confirm fibre is ok. New Patch leads too! Anyone seen this before or any ideas? schools back in next week and I need to sort this out ASAP. Any advice gratefully received!

Had a look and to be honest I'm a bit lost it all looks ok. Have added the group who is allowed access but not sure if I need to do anything else. ? would anyone be willing to pm a screenshot of how you setup yours ? I need to get this working ready for Monday.

I'm having a really strange issue. Setup rds all working for domain admins and 1 standard user in group "staff - sims" who isn't an admin. login vid rdweb and all perfect for the user "Test" login as another staff - sims member and i get "you are not authorized to login" have checked group memberships and they are all identical, Anyway i comare the working "test" user with all others in the same group ? Any idea why my mysterious user works and no one else does ?
