I know this is slightly OT but moving DNS away from Capita is the way to go. Try using Vidahost which offer free DNS hosting for schools, then you can make your own changes.

Hi, We in the process of testing VPN and looking at the feasibility of including 2FA into the mix. So far we have a Sophos UTM 9 as the gateway and using SSL VPN which works ok. Looking at the logs I see a small number of failed VPN logons each day so am conscious that this will only get worse hence the thoughts of 2FA. So the reason of this post is just to see how many other schools use 2FA and do staff manage to logon ok? Thanks in advance.

Right, using KMS for activation on Office 2016. I understand clients need to activate every 180 days so my question relates to teacher laptops which are out of the school most of the time. If said laptop was brought back into school say every 4-6 weeks would it reset the activation timer back to zero or does the reactivation check only happen at the end of the 180 day period? Junior librarian .net is cloud based. The sims server runs groupcall which syncs with junior librarian sending the pupil details. It is groupcall which is not sending the data so as it stands junior librarian will not have the current class list when the school opens next week.

I wouldn't normally use IE on a server but was having problems with cpoms sending the sims data to Meritec so I opened IE and it took around 10 seconds to load google. I tried the other VM servers and they were the same including the hyper-v host. So it looks like I've done something wrong when setting them up which Meritex think might have a bearing on why cpoms is not updating. Any ideas?

Over the holiday we setup a new sims server (2012r2) on a vm which is working fine. The problem we are having is getting Junior Librarian .net working again as every time we run an update it errors with 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object'. Microlib have tried to sort it but so far have failed. I've googled the error and the closest thing I can find is https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/810098 Anyone else had problems like this?

I've been looking at NAS enclosures to mount the drives I've already got and found this Qnap unit QNAP TS-453A-4G 4 Bay Enclosure (TS-453A-4G) - www.misco.co.uk which doesn't cost too much but now looking closer on the Qnap site it looks more like a home NAS with all the bells and whistles I'm not going to need https://www.qnap.com/en/product/model.php?II=212 Any suggestions for other models?

The NAS was 4 1/2 years old so not done too bad but would have liked it to have lasted longer. There's not much budget here being a primary so will look at Freenas as I've got 4 1TB drives going spare now. It would be nice to get the old NAS running again but without a circuit diagram it would be hard work.

I had a job finding the keys! I removed one drive in turn and now all of them are out but still no power to the LEDs. I've taken the cover off and the heatsink on the PSU is very hot which I don't think should happen without any load so I'm guessing the problem is with the PSU shorting out on a component.

I always leave it set to manual but I've tried both, auto and manual.

We've got a Buffalo Terastation TS-XEL which is used as the backup NAS. It's been working fine and last week I wanted to logon to the web console but it refused to accept the admin password but otherwise it was working ok and the nightly backups continued working fine. I've come back to it today and it still wouldn't accept the admin logon so I tried a hard reset. The front power button didn't respond so I removed the power, waited a short while then reconnected it. Now the whole box is dead with no lights on the front LEDs. The rear fan runs for a few seconds so I know the power lead is ok but otherwise it's a door stop and no amount of holding the power button in will start the thing. Anyone know how to get it working again?

On moving VMs from 2012 to 2012r2 I see there is a new integration service offered called guest services. Goggle tells me this is for transferring files using powershell so is it needed as I managed ok before?

Yes I was reading a thread about 4.6.1 causing problems with clients but nothing was said about servers so I guess the server version was bug free.

I'm setting up a new sims server and in the middle of the windows updates. What version of .net framework does a sims server need? I understand it needs v3.5 but I see v4.6.1 is out. Would v4.6.1 replace v3.5 or are they both needed?

Thanks but I can't see any drivers about chipsets. I'm in the middle of downloading the Proliant service pack which keeps pausing so when that's downloaded I might know more. In the past I've always used Dell servers and they came with software called Server Administrator which showed everything about the server hardware and I expect HP has similar software for their servers. What is the name of the HP version of this software please?

Started setting up a new HP Proliant 380 server today (thanks @ICTDirect_Dave ). Looking at the HP driver list on their website there are loads of drivers that are available. I see windows has already installed most drivers but which drivers do I need to replace from the HP driver page as I expect some will run better than the stock windows drivers? One driver that windows didn't install is listed as base system device. Which driver is needed for that please? Thanks in advance.

Thanks but that was already unticked. The first clue was when I checked the registry and found the usershell desktop settings had returned back to default then in the event log I found After a bit of googling it turns out I need to add 'Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon ' in GP which I've added but it makes logon rather long at 30 seconds.

I should know this but after playing with windows 10 profiles I'm having problems redirecting desktop and start menu. The first time the user logs on it works fine but the next time the redirected desktop and menu setting have not applied. In the past I have deleted the profiles at logoff and all was well but I thought I could make it quicker if I left the profiles in place for say a week and delete if not used so I changed the gp to keep them for 7 days which is causing problems. I am using mandatory profiles so was thinking is there something about mandatory profiles and redirected desktop/menu that is causing the profile not to apply?
