  1. i've now noticed somthing that i'm not too hapy with about fasthosts i have used them for years. and i use catchall mail forwarding so i can use throwaway email addresses eg: [email protected], [email protected] 12345@@website.com etc. However i'm now getting loads of junk mail sent to different addresses I used ONLY ONCE from years ago. So it poses the interesting question of how those addresses got out. Either Fasthosts has been hacked before or more likley, someone within Fasthosts is selling email addresses.
  2. ok it's not that then
  3. how does this compare with netsupport school ?
  4. check your access point. We had that problem, I swapped our AP and the above problem stopped.
  5. I've found a handy tip from the windows secrets newsletter to help prevent autorun attacks. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf] @="@SYS:DoesNotExist" The AutoRun function in Windows can launch installers and other programs automatically when you insert a CD or flash drive, but this convenience poses a serious security risk. Unfortunately, simply turning off AutoPlay, a separate feature, isn't enough to prevent AutoRun from introducing a rogue program into your system. 7. Anyone use the schools version of eJay ? The problem i have is that when kids record their own wav's, eJay saves them to the local eJay directory in a folder called recsav. Now i'm getting a stream of kids reporting their work is lost because they are logging onto a different PC in the music suite. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO REDIRECT THIS LOCATION? I need to have these files saved into the kids network drive (z:) Thanks
  8. Why not throw a couple of disks in an old PC and use robocopy to mirror overnight? Add redundency with mirroring or raid 5... Once you have done the first copy, subsequent copies would be quite quick
  9. to launch exe's from the browser A solution, but not very secure would be to install the run protocol handler, then you can launch exe's from a webpage.... I use this for my custom network-admin intranet i have written in asp to launch VNC, Ping, Darkpush, PSshutdown PSexec etc. etc. although it's only installed on the two pc's i use in my office
  10. opera for me
  11. Just added another free app to the toolbelt. spotlight-on-windows i've only seen one brief mention of it in the forum so i thought i would bring it to your attention, it's a jem and the slideshow looks nice. Blurb from their site is below. Spotlight on Windows For a busy IT professional, it is nearly impossible to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve every component affecting Windows Operating System (OS) performance using manual methods. Without a clear view of I/O and system activity, you learn of performance issues only after problems erupt. With its unique graphical view of the Windows OS internals, Quest® Spotlight® on Windows empowers you to quickly identify and eliminate bottlenecks in the Windows environment. Displaying the real-time flow of data within your Windows OS, Spotlight enables you to quickly identify and resolve performance problems. Please Note: Spotlight on Windows is unsupported freeware. The license key is provided in the download package and expires one year after installation. To renew, please revisit this website. An activation key will be made available prior to the expiration date of your current key.
  12. I've just got Hardglass 19" Widescreen TFTs from PCWorld business for the very good price of £109. Thats the good news. Now for the two gotchas: 1) Like an idot i did'nt think about the aspect ratio difference for IWB's because we split the signal to the whiteboards and the monitors. 2) Dell Optiplex PC's don't have 1440x900 as a native resolution. GRRRRRR! and as it's the intel Chipset i guess that would apply to many other brands
  13. 1) enable lagacy support in bios 2) also if you are still having problems and it's not the drive letter: try uninstalling the USB ROOT HUB in devices restart and then the drivers will be re-installed.
  14. :hiding: Thanks !! gr8 input, did'nt mean to sound negative if it came across as such.
  15. my aim was not to shutdown the pc's but to identify the serial offenders and stick my foot up their arse I could have just batched a psshutdown for the portion of my subnet outside the fixed ip range but being a control freak i like the idea of knowing whats going on. the script parses it at source, no exporting
  16. I thought i would parse the DHCP logfile because that seemed like a good way of not having to tie into AD (we have 3 domains) and people bring in their own laptops etc. Also did'nt go down the route of ping sweeps incase the device (because it may not even be a computer) may not reply to echo requests.
  17. just written a little vbs to parse the dhcp logfile for renews after 8pm (i run a short lease) It works very well but am i going about it in the wrong way... how do you do it?
  18. set it up today!!! not done the demo yet. easy as ABC, stick it in a VM!!
  19. this one is great http://smoothslideshow.jondesign.net/
  20. usually there is a hole on one side of the drive covered with a silver sticker, stick a srewdriver in there and scratch it all up then smack it with a hammer, the Tech's love it
  21. different virus same attack vector though what antivirus are you using? make sure autorun is disabled for all drives to stop it spreading because when it gets on a network share. BLAM all clients reading that share with autorun enabled will get infected Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:000000ff [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:000000ff if it gets on a network share then check who the owner of autorun.inf is and that will lead you to any infected machines

Have you tried pressing CTRL+F5 on the client to force an update through the proxy?
  23. it's a trojan, if you get rid of it effectivly let me know how. http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10847 http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10834 anyone got any good ideas for preventing infection in the first place? I have disabled autorun in registry for all drives that helps on writable server shares i have created a fake recycled folder and a empty autorun.inf and locked them so they cant be overwritten to stop it spreading. If your using Sophos then you will have to add .INF as an extension to be scanned PS. this one is a pain in the ARSE
  24. If you have an employer that knows about IT then the MCSA and especially the MCSE is very valuble. Be prepared to take a lot in; subnet math in your head can take a little getting used to dont cheat and go the braindump route, learn it for yourself, It's much more rewarding to get your MCSA Tie Pin knowing your an IT Ninja than a answer remembering monkey. I done the Network Design and AD Design as my MCSE electives... Thats a lot of meat on them two bones at four hours per exam.
  25. i use mircosoft Netwatch. I think it's an old NT RK tool, but it works well in ad shows shares, and in-use files
