Hello... anyone here? Echo (echo..echo..ec)
basicchannel replied to basicchannel's topic in EduGeek Shutdownertron
There's not a huge amount to post really. On the client we're getting shutdownertron entries throughout the day displaying current settings which are incorrect (showing 6pm instead of 7:30 which is how it is configured on the server), and then a second entry that says 'service started successfully'. Then at the incorrect time the service kicks in. It's currently running on Server 2008 R2 and our clients are all XP although I swear I had problems on our Server 2003 setup. Clocks and timezones of misbehaving PCs are all fine. I guess if it is because we're running server 2008, i'll just have to hope for 1.5 to eventually be released. Apart from the above event log entries, as far as I can see there are no errors on either server or client, unless there is a log file somewhere I can view? -
So we've got Shutdownertron installed on the network but I'm having problems with it ignoring assigned shutdown times on the server and just doing its own damn thing on the clients. Before I completely remove it from our network and go back to our batch script, is there anyone out there who can offer an ounce of support or suggestions as to why it's doing this, or is this software completely dead? For example on our server it's all nicely set to shutdown at 7pm, yet some clients are insisting on shutting down at 5:30pm.

Local Web Server Brain-scratcher
basicchannel replied to basicchannel's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thanks for the suggestions guys. It seems like a basic restart of the apache service helped somewhat, although I'm going to look into the other suggestions later today. I shall report back ASAP. -
Hi, I have inherited an Ubuntu 10.04 web server which is currently serving our school website, helpdesk and Moodle. It's fairly robust all things considered, but I'm having problems with certain local clients timing out when they try to access our school website for no apparent reason. It seems pretty random, and it's currently affecting my machine. All other websites are fine, it's just any sites hosted on our web server are a no-go. There isn't any real error message in the browser - IE just says 'Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage' and Mozilla just gives a generic web page timed out message. I initially thought it was our wireless connection as it seemed to affect laptops first, but my machine, and a few others are wired. Can anyone suggest any logs I can look at on the server itself, to see if there's any errors as to why it's refusing to deliver content? We are going to be migrating it soon to externally hosted, but that may not be for another couple of months. Thanks in advance

As a community made up of techies who work in schools, I would suggest we all promote this option.

What software do most Universities and Colleges use for...
basicchannel replied to CHiLL's topic in Educational Software
I did *half* a film degree and the university I went to had both Avid and Final Cut Pro suites for video editing. For some reason the FCP suites were used pretty much exclusively by the documentary film students, and the Avid suites by the conventional film students (not sure if that reflects the industry standard). As for photo editing, I'd say Adobe Creative Suite all the way. -
What helpdesk software do you use?

It's a shame Spiceworks hasn't got a Linux release, as we were looking to either externally host or integrate with our current web server. -

Hmmm, Spiceworks looks very interesting. I'll have a look at that -

We're currently using open source free software too, but it's just very limited. It would be nice to have things like a dashboard, analytics and other fancy stuff. At the moment, having something where you can auto-reply closed tickets would be a start. -
If any. We're currently looking to migrate to a better helpdesk system, so any recommendations would be oh so helpful. Ones I know so far are the likes of Zendesk, but Zendesk is way too expensive (and probably overkill too) Thanks

[android] Samsung Galaxy S2 = Ice Cream Update
basicchannel replied to newpersn's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Screw waiting for Virgin Mobile to release an update. Root and custom ROM it be. -
Has anyone had any problems with Shutdownertron executing at completely the wrong time on just a single workstation? I've got one workstation where the event logs are telling me Shutdownertron was executed at 09:30 this morning. Inside the log it states the correct hour/minute etc as 18:00. Another time it was shutting down at 16:30 (same computer)

Playing on my friends Amiga 600. His house was like a house of tech, and mine was like a medieval cave. He used to get an Amiga magazine every month which came with a free floppy with game trials on. I just remember playing on Lemmings and Civilization. Also, Worms Armageddon. That soundtrack still makes me cry today.

Just got an email today from AppDeploy (didn't even know I'd signed up to their newsletter) saying their website is soon to become ITNinja.com. It's saying the new site is looking at more broader discussion of all things of interest to the IT professional. Older articles are being migrated over, and will be archived. I have used AppDeploy on a number of occasions as I'm sure many here have, and I'll be interested in how this new direction pans out. I believe the changeover happens on 19/3/12, but you can sign up on their ITNinja site to receive updates.

Help for 2 Year Experienced Young IT Technician

Don't underestimate interpersonal skills either. Qualifications are all well and good, as is experience, but if you can't handle human beings you won't get very far. Especially in a school environment. -

I would say that would be an accurate observation. -
It's Friday, so I thought I'd link to my new favourite website for times of boredom. MOVIECLIPS: Movie Trailers, Previews, Clips of Old, New & Upcoming Films and with this I shall link to one of my favourite scenes in one of my favourite films Harumphing with the Governor Scene from Blazing Saddles Movie (1974) | MOVIECLIPS Possibly NSFW, so open with caution

Thanks Achandler, that was helpful. Our main issue is that we haven't money in the budget for Ruckus, yet we need to improve our infrastructure to deal with the glut of shiny kit coming our way. Ubiquiti seems like a good alternative

Has anyone ever heard of Ubiquiti? I've been told they're a much cheaper alternative to Ruckus, but it could be sales spiel.

Analysing an Exchange Mailbox
basicchannel replied to basicchannel's topic in Learning Network Manager
No, it's a bit more complicated than that. I want the statistics of a particular mailbox. Basically we're getting complaints that a certain MoS is receiving too much mail, and this is affecting their job. I want to get data on their particular mailbox which will show how many messages they've received on a daily basis in the last month, and on average, how many they receive in a month. I imagine this is possible using powershell or VBS, but I'm yet to find an example script that gives results at such a granular level. -

OK... any suggestion as to how to go about doing this in Service Manager?
