Yeah, basically if your phone has a SIM card it's GSM. Just installed Oxygen and so far it's awesome. TBH I did love Sense but seeing something like Oxygen seems to make Sense look a bit laggy, so maybe I could live without it. Oxygen doesn't have an option to set up a proxy host though, which was what was cool about Cyanagen based ROMs. I'm still on the lookout though

OK fairplay. It felt like a brick when it wouldn't get past the HTC startup screen, but it wasn't broken beyond repair. Now downloading Oxygen BTW.

OK, so I (almost) bricked my beautiful desire yesterday. Spent the best part of a day tearing out my hair until, after trying loads of different fixes, I realised I had missed some TINY detail on the installation instructions (pah, who needs instructions). Now I can't stop installing different ROMs. Yesterday it was Cyanogenmod, this morning it's OpenDesire and now I'm looking at Villain. My poor old phone doesn't know what's hit it. Anyone recommend any ROMs for the Desire? I did like Cyanogenmod but I missed HTC Sense.

So we've decided to get some digital signage for our school and have been looking at Navaho and Sedao; both companies that supply 'all-in-one' solutions with cool little boxes that attach to the back of the screen. We've also been looking at Xibo, and I was wondering, how could someone do a Navaho mediacat style box themselves? Is there any ultrasmall computers out there on the market that would fit on the back of an LCD screen?

Hi All, This may be a completely stupid question, or it should perhaps go under 'Learning Network Manager' (i'll be happy to accept either or both). We have a rogue IP address on the network and i've been using the ARP command on our gateway server to try and find the perpetrator. The problem is this person hasn't been online all day it seems, and I just have to make educated guesses at the best time to do a search (break times etc). Is there any way you can loop ARP requests so I can just leave it running all day and take action when it finds it? Thanks for any suggestions

We sell off our old laptops every year to staff for a small fee. This year we had one teacher who put is name down, was picked out of the hat, and then forced us to wait almost a whole month until next payday before he could buy it (becuase he couldn't afford it). I couldn't afford one so I didn't put my name down.

Hi, I just wanted to hear what people would do if they were faced with the following scenario: So you're an IT technician in a school and it's all fine apart from the salary. Things just aren't adding up, and increasing living costs mean that you're skint a lot of the time. You look for something else which pays better on the downlow. You find something, apply, get an interview and although you haven't yet heard back you're pretty confident. The potential new job pays a lot more (lets say for the sake of argument it pays approx 1/3 more than your current gross annual salary) but there are downsides. 1. It's a temp, year-long contract. Although you may get a premanant job at the end of it. 2. You're currently in a permanant position which is pretty safe; something that's rare these days 3. Your potential new job is pretty different to your current one. You might hate every second of it. 4. There MAY be a chance of you getting a small pay-rise in your current position in the next few months. This is not guaranteed however, and if you were successful the resulting pay would still be significantly less than the potential new position. Now lets say you get a phonecall and are offered the job. Bearing all the above factors in mind, what would you guys do? Any opinions would be a great help

One of my favourite tracks so far is 'The game Has changed'. i just love that muffled Daft'esque intro. I'm unsure of the film though/slightly apprehensive. Checking out the page on IMDB and the guy directing it has never directed a feature film before. How crazy is that?

Just listening to it now and...wow! Amazing effort from Daft Punk. Sweeping synths, epic orchestras, Daft Punk meets Hans Zimmer meets something else equally as good (i could never be a music reviewer). I guess if the film turns out to be crap at least the soundtrack can remain awesome.

Hi, Can anyone recommend any good, fairly low cost VPS hosting companies out there? My school is currently on a shared hosting plan with Names Co, and speed issues are forcing us to change. Obviously in an ideal world we'd love to have a dedicated physical server , but that aint' gonna happen in a million years. We have also hosted locally before, which was great when the servers weren't down (no where near 99.95% uptime promised by most hosting companies). Also if you've any shared hosting suggestions too that would be just as appreciated Any suggestions would be great cheers Stats: We get an average of around 60-80,000 hits a month and around 10GB/month bandwidth usage. The site is primarily for prospective students/parents but also offers school calendar functions and a letter download area. We're using Joomla the main reason for the move is purely speed issues.

Hi. Thought I'd get in on this post too. We're currently using a Names Co shared server but our site has been lagging recently. We changed the SQL database to another server which seems to have made things speed up a bit, but our Names Co plan expires in January so I think it would be a great opportunity to go elsewhere. Can anyone recommend any dedicated serve plans out there? The site uses Joomla CMS and is the main portal for prospective students, and a source of news information for students, staff and parents (large traffic volume). Cheers

Yeah, I've been spending a lot of time studying the IT Jobs Watch website, looking under the keyword 'Developer'. I did like the look of Python too, and I have read a lot of comments about how PHP is a horrible language, but again, everyone seems to have deifferent opinions.

No that's what I mean by 'A kick'. I guess I just want opinions, plus if anyone out there has started learning, or has learnt Ruby.

I find I get bombarded with thousands of opinions on what to learn and what not to learn, each one with another set of opposing posts. And then when you've decided there's that age old question 'what's the best way to learn'.

Hi All, Now I know you guys probably hate this kind of cliched question, but here goes. It runs along the line of that old chestnut 'What programming language should I learn/what type of hot beverage should I consume on a daily basis' but with a twist. The truth is I know which one I want to learn, but i wanted to know what you guys thought. I really want to learn Ruby, and then Rails but I have no programming experience. The next thing is I'm one of those annoying people who like to do something different to the norm. I like Ruby's philosophy and the fact that it's fairly new and a bit punk (maybe?). In a nutshell I need some guidance. NB My goal is to get into web development. I am currently an IT Tech at a school. Thanks in advance

Hi all, firstly this is my first post, but I'm looking forward to being a regular poster on Edugeek from now on. Our school is looking into using USB sticks for examinations, which means a lot of USB sticks. One of the main headaches with this is easily backing up USB data onto a local computer. Ideally we would love a piece of software that automatically detects a USB stick's been inserted and backs it up onto a specified folder without having to bother about configuring individual USB sticks one at a time beforehand, or telling the software to do something over and over again. There seems to be plenty of software that does the opposite (backs up computer data onto a USB drive), but very few that does what we need. I guess the last resort would be writing our own script. Also if it included a mass wiping option too, that would be amazing If anyone has any suggestions of software which might fullfill this objective, I would be one greatful ICT technician.
