How hard is it to change spark plugs on a 53 plate 1.6 petrol Focus? I was half way home from a food run when the engine management light started flashing and the whole car started shaking at anything under 20mph. Not to mention it sounded like crap and smells of petrol. The ECU is telling me cylinder 3 is misfiring, so I assume it's the plugs. They haven't been swapped out in at least five years. The loss of power was so dramatic I thought the car had gone into limp home mode, until I discovered it doesn't have it! I can't remember the last time I prayed so much to a diety I don't believe in to get home, my breakdown cover expired and I haven't renewed yet!

I'm looking forward to running RISC OS 5 on mine!

Not being in the area this probably won't help, but I'd assume 443 would be open, and it's trivial to get Sharepoint running on that with a self signed cert.

I hate it. That is all. The doctors in their infinite wisdom have decided to put me on six different types of medication all of which have fairly nasty side affects. I thought I'd be happy when the vomitting stopped, but 38 hours without ANY SLEEP at all is started to cause a slight disconnect from reality. The worst part is I stopped taking them all over 24 hours ago.

No funky lights anymore! Finally I get my hands on a budget, and an agreement for an uber laptop - and they don't do flashy lights on the XPS series anymore! That was a great meeting with my Head : Me: "Erm, I hate to be cheeky..." Head: "I like cheeky, go ahead!" Me: "Well I had a chat with the old DH and he said I could look into a superdooper laptop at the end of the financial year along with getting me a budget sorted to streamline operations... so too cheeky?!" Head: "Why do you need one better than ?" Me: "Blah Blah Blah, Virtual Machines, Blah, Work from home, Blah" Head: "OK, how much?" Me: "Around £600/£700" Head "Oh, that little? Go for a better one that'll last" Me: The downside is I now have to buy all the bloody photocopier paper as well.

Why pay for laptops if they are only going to be used on the network on site? Surely a desktop or netbook with Terminal Services would be much cheaper. I've never understood this reluctance to let staff use their laptops as they need and want to. Yes it may be the schools, but at the end of the day we're always complaining about teaching staff IT literacy and some folks then go and lock staff machines down so they can barely use them. Ours are on the domain, staff have local admin rights. Sophos AV updates from a secondary source provided by the LEA, and they are all encrypted with Sophos Safeguard. I also use LANSweeper to report on software installed, and give them all the copyright and virus reminder each term. No one has abused this. Their home page is set to Sharepoint which is in the proxy exceptions list. So on site they log straight in, and when at home they get the Forefront web login page. Staff actually comment on how much better it is compared to other schools where they were severely restricted. My father in laws old school (retired physics teacher) locked down staff laptops so staff could only use white listed applications. Anything else had to be trialed by the IT Support department, approved by them and then installed by them. Talk about restricting innovation!

In reply to a message posted to me almost a year ago, if you do encounter massive weightless without exercise (even with much less food) check it out. I've lost 4 stone in 14 months, and tomorrow I get the joy of a camera shoved down my throat. I've also been anaemic for several months without realising - well it makes sense now, light head, cold and fuzzy extremities, getting up with under 12 hours sleep is like waking the dead, migranes, bouts of sickness etc. I ignornatly thought I'd just lost weight, and that the other symptoms were just a physical response to not enjoying work at the moment. Actually I'm bleeding internally somewhere, and was lucky it was caught with a blood test for a stomach bug. Don't risk it! God knows what they'll find tomorrow ...

To be fair more primaries are starting to see the need for in house technical professionals to stop this sort of thing happening. Those who don't have it, or can't afford it have to make do the best they can which is either relying on the LEA, or relying on a teacher who has limited experience, very limited time and limited patience who'll sign anything to an outside "expert" to get it over with. My place was the same (or no where near as bad) before I started. 4 hours a week LEA support and the IT Coordinator doing everything else. Luckily she's an AST and soon to be SLT and been doing the job for decades, so knew her limitations. Now we have an IT Manager (me) and apprentice technician (80% IT, 20% office) and an IT Coordinator whose on the SLT. Yes, not all primaries can afford to do it on this scale - but surely for the one in the article paying a techie £20K a year would have been far better than owing the bank £700,000!

Don't buy cheap. I still haven't invested in a decent one as suburban Birmingham is frankly piss poor for viewing. You can't even see the Milky Way.

Hello, Does anyone know which ports need opening to where to allow me to access the Live@Edu PowerShell sessions from work? At the moment I can't connect either with PS or EMC (which uses PS to connect) so I have to do it all from home. This can be bore as you're stuffed if working to rote, and if you actually need to do something to a mailbox urgently which is more advanced than the web management tool is has to wait. M

I've been tooling around with Small Business Server 2011, and just as a thought I tried using Exchange Management Console (2010) to connect to my Live@Edu forest. And it worked! Either I've been exceptionally ignorant or Microsoft haven't publicised this as well as they could have. The one major thing that I found missing from Live@Edu was the GUI management console, as PowerShell can be a bit of a pain at times. Did anyone else know that this worked?!

I went to Tesco just before closing last night, cos were sad, obviously. I was amazed still loads of veg, meat and next to no one there. I was expecting empty shelves and mad rushing around consumers. The worst part? By 6:30pm on Christmas Eve they'd already removed all the Christmas signage and had the sale section up and running.

Nothing! But then again I use PeerBlock whenever uTorrent is open.

I swapped out an old P4 with board, for a Core 2 Duo last night. The P4 had a smaller, unbroken case. It's now my Fedora box. The P4 board is going into the old Core2Duo case which is massive along with 5 old PATA DVD-RW drives to make a home built DVD duplicator for next years Christmas show. 200 DVDs copied in 2 working days this year! Thank God for an IT suite and 20 PCs with DVDR drives!

This has been going on for years in one form or another. Back in the late 90s my GCSE History teacher told the entire class he'd chosen a London based exam board as their exams were aimed towards pupils whose English was a second language. Hence they marked according to that assumption, so a bunch of white working class kids from the Shires would get better marks, than if he'd chosen another one.

Some fellows are trying to get RISC OS running on it, as it's ARM based.
