It's hard getting into education IT - not many schools are recruiting and those of us in are battening down the hatches and holding on to the jobs we have whilst riding out the storm. Volunteering at one, especially over the summer during big projects could be a help.

Very interesting. Clubs still forget the thing they need most is time with a Manager. All we get now is a merry go round. No gaffers have any real emotional investment in a club. As a Derby fan I'm pleasantly surprised they've given Cloughie a fair crack to get things right, and not dump him. Sadly this is not prevelent in any league, and frankly for Nigel Clough if he was anyone else he'd have been out months ago.

Well I've found one thing I like- mounting ISOs direct from Explorer. As for the rest ... I'm still playing. I hope Server 8 isn't like this. Touch enabled Server Manager - the horror! Edit - The Start "menu" won't appear whilst installing software!

Install?! How the hell do I get the Run box up?!

I think they've screwed the pooch. No enterprise is going to want this. No Start Menu, a fiddly tablet menu system to launch an app - which takes you OUT of the desktop to do so. Either they are being very, very clever and assuming most enterprises will either stick with 7 after an arduous XP migration, or be on XP and be in the process of migration to 7. This really feels like a home only system.

Can't buy the bugger though!

Weird one this, been banging my head against it since August and just a minor eureka moment now. I had to rebuild the network and the moron that I am I set the internal domain name to be the same as our external one (school.bham.sch.uk) as it was how it was at my last place. Of course this broke Live@Edu autodiscover. I created a CNAME record pointing autodiscover.trapper.bham.sch.uk to autodiscover.outlook.com, but it's never worked. Hence I now know our server details intimately. Just on a fluke I created an internal SRV record tonight: _autodiscover_.tcp_10_2_443 pointing to autodiscover-s.outlook.com (apparantly the S is for the SRV connection) and it works! But it takes an age for Outlook to connect as apparantley the SRV record is the last thing it tries. Well, anything is better than nothing. I've tried changing our CNAME to autodisc-s.outlook, but it doesn't do anything. Either I'm a complete idiot and missed something obvious, or Birmingham is doing something funky (I'd guess option 1). However even if no-one has a solution to the CNAME option, I thought I'd post the SRV solution as an "it-works-but-is-a-bit-crap" possibility.

I once heard of someone (*AHEM*) stealing it and then making the worst offenders listen to their most embarrasing music in the office. However that was for the staff, so as for the students ...

Hey folks, I've found one of these (lucky as we were going to spend £200 on a new one!) however the CD is missing. The EcoLog website has a support section that is "coming soon" and I really need the software. I emailed them a while ago, but no response. Does anyone have the CD?! Cheers

I have the UBCD on my multiboot USB stick. I think this has a deeper implication for the costs of some products which especially small scale infrastructures like schools would hardly use. I glad to see more open source replacements however.

I had a Yaris on holiday and it was pretty good. I've got a Focus now (1.6, 52 plate) and it costs a bomb to run. £170 odd for road tax, and as I only drive in the city the fuel economy is shocking.

It was a combination of several drugs, several painkillers, a sedative and a badly knackered system. I told the GP not to give me anything for it, the last thing I needed was more chemicals in my system!

I'd also say staff IT skills plays a large part. Last place Computing Spec. Status, where I am now they haven't had IT changes in years. That also takes up a large chunk of my time.

Mine is a bit weird were all age, but I'd still call us a Primary School. However as we're special our budget per student is much larger. We have around 140 on roll, but with a budget of two medium sized primaries. I work full time, my techie works term time only and spends 20% of his time helping in the office. At the moment we're coping just fine, and if I'm honest I could drop my techie down to 50/50 and do a bit more hands on work. However we are planning on moving to a site double the size, so the team is in place for a dramatic up in the work. 140 kids, 70 staff (20 teaching, rest support/TA), around about 100 devices at present which will at least double within the next year. When I was in mainstream secondary we had a team of three, although honestly we could have got by with two - 800 kids, 90 staff, ~500 devices - but importantly much newer. Where I am now 8 year old projectors and 10 year old IWBs take up a lot of time to keep running.

We've only had a couple I just forward them SLT way and ask for guidance. I've never received any guidance so we've just ignored them. The important thing with this is that SLT feel they are in control. As long as you respect that and make sure everything goes through them they seem to jump on board.

When I retire circa 2086 I plan to complete a PhD in History. Most of my friends back home have PhDs, it really is like being Howard from the Big Bang Theory when you're the only non-doctor.

Yes we use it, after a long, long, long, LOOOOONNNG battle between me and the old DH and the rest of the SLT. It's used instead of the classic "newsfeed" on the website. Much quicker to tweet information and then have it appear on a medium with multiple ways to access it (website, Twitter, email notifications, mobile etc.) All content must be SLT approved before being Tweeted, no replies, technically no re-tweets but if the National Autistic Assoc. sticks something good up I do it anyway! All followers have to be checked, we've had some folks that the Head disliked (even one was the partner of a staff member, the donkey decided that boozing was a good thing to put on his about status) who've then been removed. For me it's easier to get information out without having to faff with Joomla, the parents get multiple access routes and we have a social media preference. After a while they even suggested Facebook, but I nixed that. For a start I can't update it from work, secondly the school could really do without students "friending" us and finally I know we'd have staff who'd friend the school and then we'd see that they spent all weekend boozing, posting stupid photos of themselves and then really open a can of worms!
