If I understand you correctly, we've got a similar set up with 12 laptops in a trolley... A wireless AP in the trolley broadcasts a network and if it's plugged into a nearby LAN port - it's a portable wireless extension of our standard wired network. These Dell laptops have Intel wireless too. Setup Intel Wireless for PreLogon Described on the link above is the process I used to tell the PROSet wireless tool to connect the wireless network *before* the user logs in. I think that will solve your problem. (Our set up is XP, but I guess it should work the same on 7!)

The beef is, they suck at Internet Service Providings don't they... Case in point: I know a consumer, who switched from BT to Sky Broadband in order to get a better deal by buying all services from one supplier - made sense to me and I supported their decision. Now I'm a cable bb customer I must admit but as far as I'm aware, Sky actually provide (A)DSL service down BT backbone/ infrastructure - so how it happened that on Sky, they would be getting 0.1 megabits down and 0.4 up all the time was beyond me.. That's not even "broad" band!! So they're switching to their local cable provider.

I've been overall thoroughly impressed with Reader X, it's gone out to pretty much all machines via GPO, wiping 7 which we had previously on the way in and had zero reported issues...!! I couldn't quite believe it!

Hrmm, do all the clients and the server need special firewall rules to allow them out?? Sounds like a bit of a pain..

City & Guilds - What's happening Looks like City & Guilds are moving AWAY from Promissor towards this web-based "E-volve" thing.. Can't wait to try it. Almost anything will be preferable.. The most techie news I can find from that site is, it'll be a web-based install (probably ActiveX or some such).

We've always had issues with Promissor. I for one, hate it. An upgrade, in their book, is a complete reinstall including removing reg keys which the unistaller doesn't touch, and then adding Everyone permissions to the reinstalled reg keys and rebooting a few times and moving the old stuff in the DATAPATH elsewhere, then making sure the new DATAPATH stuff is there, ringing their tech support to reset authentication keys (usually takes ~15mins) then manually upgrading every single client in a room.

I don't think it'll be worth the hassle...

All the data is kept in a MySQL database, so it is a database!! The website is just a nicer way to look at the data..

Same here!! Argh, I'm torn between my Nokia brand loyalty, the definitely superior spec of the N8 vs. the Android platform which is definitely getting more attention and probably will get even more in 2011. Absolutely torn.. Can't make up my mind. Keep putting it off and putting it off..

My other half got the aforementioned HP Photosmart B110 Wireless for xmas.. Set it up yesterday and really impressed so far. Unpacked, turned it on, put in wifi password and that's that. It scans, copies and prints. It's got a unique HP eprint email address so it'll automatically print anything emailed to that address from a whitelist of email addresses. Installed on our two ubuntu laptops in a few clicks. Not tried installing on Windows yet but I do suspect it won't be so easy.. Well chuffed with it.. Only down side thing is, for some reason it totally forgets the wireless association when it's been switched off :/

I found FacePINCH real-time Facebook search | FacePINCH [facepinch . com] a while back. It scrapes publicly accessible Fb profiles and indexes their status updates.. Perhaps some well executed screenshots of this site could show students learning about e-Safety what it's possible to see from their profiles - this data is obviously available to anyone any where.. I also use it to track mentions of the school name on unsecured Facebook accounts to see what the general vibes are from the student body. Although I haven't decided what to do with abusive messages etc. yet - I suppose send them to our Safeguarding Officer for him to decide what the best course of action should be. This seems a bit dishonest.. Problem is, the smallest legit license is for business use at £400 odd. Perhaps they should do an "advanced home" user type of license where it's a little easier on the pocket/wallet but would allow multiple sessions etc.

Just adding another name into the hat: we had a presentation from txttools - txt messaging for education, healthcare and business TXT Tools recently, not sure if we'll be going with them or not at this stage.

We've rolled out UHPClean on all machines side wide to fix issues with roaming profiles breaking for students.. It worked too. I used to have to reset a few profiles per day, now we get don't get so many but we do still get the Cookies.dat error as above. Thanks for the top though.

I've tried clearing out old profiles in the past - and letting Windows re-create them with fresh settings- the problem just comes back after a while..

Yeah, I use SysPrep then take the actual image. It resets all the security IDs and whenever a the image is installed it asks for a machine name and joins to the domain as that, appearing fresh in WSUS usually.

We get a similar error on cookies.dat a lot of times when people log off. I'm not 100% what the cause is and it doesn't appear to break anything to haven't really looked into it properly yet. Any clues on where to look would be appreciated..

T'is true. Mozilla's weave and Chrome's syncing extensions have been life savers and I think are definitely the way forward.. I had to start a-fresh though when I first actively started using those services. Never was very organised or structured with bookmarks in the past but am now..
