I was under the impression that only Capita can sell a school maintenance if the school holds the license. Worth checking with Capita.

I remember one year going to the Serco Learning stand to test Progresso that had been setup on laptops in and around their stand. I was a bit disappointed to find that it wasn't a live Progresso being shown, but a PowerPoint of screenshots running in a loop. Are Advanced going this year?

There was also no national user group meeting for LA's using Capita One this year. This has in the past been a set over a couple of days with an overnight stay. Nothing this year....... Given that we pay nearly £40k just for support (excluding-maintenance), you would expect a user group of some description and a road map! Seem to be lots of belt tightening across the board.

This was some time ago, but the booking 'window' for stands for Bett opened during the Bett event for the following year. Capita along with all the other big players (RM etc) would have got their stand location sorted out 10 months ago. Any decision not to attend has to be a fairly recent one. SIMS8 was barely mentioned at the last LA update event, not a good sign. The people running the current SIMS7 have not been involved with the development of SIMS8 - which is IMO a bad thing. The lead person for SIMS7 is leaving, along with a few other key people. There does seem to be major restructring across across the whole of their ES division including sales & account management people.

Agreed - The people that developed it didn't really understand how an MIS works.

They put one of their techie's in the school for a week to type it all back in. DP alarm bells go off, but the school were in a fix.

You can log onto the MIS server and open up Managment Studio and click on full backup on the SIMS database. Once this has happened you can then (Tasks) 'Shrink' the log files. This has helped in a couple of our schools that were running slow with big .ldf files.

Yes. Their ICT provider wasn't backing their SIMS data up - opps. This didnt worry the low-lifes that broke in and stole the server over the weekend. Luckily the school had print offs of their attendance which had to be manually entered into the system.

This has happened to schools in our LA. It is possible to produce a file from ONE to populate SIMS with pupils. However, we don't collect contact details so these would need to be added manually along with attendance\exclusion data. This could be supplied, but not in a format that could be imported.

I think your shortcut is pointing to a different NT6.EXE file. Try 'My Computer' and browse to the S: drive and navigate to S:\SOVA\NT6 > NOVAT and double click on NT6.EXE

Looks like you have 2 installs of Nova on the SIMS server. You are now using a different install in a slightly different folder location.

The file is a worry. The main concern is how this information is transmitted from your sever to the cloud - encrypted or plain text?

You can open up SSMS and run this code to pull off the patches applied. I've found that its worth stopping and starting SQL overnight as it does tend to be a memory hog.

The issue has been around since mid 2017. I would check your CTF log a little further back.

I have a feeling this falls under the category of telling schools why they they don't need (and wont be getting) an increase in their funding levels. "Labour MPs have criticised a Department for Education letter that suggests schools could make up their budget shortfalls by purchasing cheaper photocopiers or switching energy suppliers. In a letter to the Labour MP John Cryer, who wrote to raise concerns about the funding shortfall for schools in his constituency, the schools minister, Nick Gibb, said the government recognised schools “are facing increasing cost pressures” and was advising schools about how to save money. MPs condemn free schools policy as incoherent and wasteful “Schools could save, on average, up to 10% by making use of our national energy deal and over 40% by using the national deal for printers and photocopiers,” the minister wrote. Other suggestions included following advice on better staff deployment from the Education Endowment Fund and the government’s school buying strategy. Cryer said the comments showed the department was “living in a fantasy world, utterly divorced from the reality in our schools” and said one school in his constituency was due to lose £960,055 in real terms over the next four years."

That sounds quite serious to me. I've never heard of a SIMS issue around timetables that kills the DB so that you can't login. What version of SQL are you using? I would ensure you have the latest SP installed on the server as this might be a bug that has a fix. How long did you wait before the reboot/stop start - if SQL was still working on its transaction this might cause a wobble. Is you ldf file massive? Are you sure the backup is from a month ago - SIMS is usually backed up every night, but if the last upgrade was a month ago then you will have .bak from then. Sorry lots of questions.

Not all of your staff who have a personnel record will need a SIMS login account. But those that do should really be linked to their staff record. The only exceptions would be generic Supply Accounts or MIS support contractors.
