  1. Thanks HPLum, ill have a look at that when i am next re-imaging, but I am looking for something else for now. I have added the Office template and setup the File open save dialog box to default to the N:\ (user drive), but when you click Open it is still taking them to the Libraries/Documents.
  2. Hi all, Recently we had students trying to hack the network so I have cut down their access to minimal, so that they can only access their documents through Computer and their homedrive. I have hidden their access to Libraries or so I thought. When they go to open work or save in Office apps they can still get access to Libraries/Documents and I want to stop this, the reason being as the Libraries allows them to see the entire path to their work '\\server\share\year\user' and I dont want them to see this even though they can't get into others work I would rather not give them the temptation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  3. I have disabled the desktop so that they can't send anything to it full stop!! Thats ok, I have tried everything. With regards to hiding, they were able to create a shortcut put a drive letter in, don't ask me how they found out they must have tried every one e.g. P:\ and it fills in the rest for them and creates the shortcut to the drive.
  4. Its ok, I deleted the registry entry to create new shortcuts via a batch file. Not ideal I know, but as a temp fix it works, so it doesn't appear on right click or on File > New either
  5. Cromertech - As a few pieces of software requires them to write to the program for example reading tests and so they can do some damage. SimpsonJ - Traverse combined with execute, so if i deny that I deny them the ability to run the programs.
  6. Hi Network41, I have done that now, and i have prevented them creating new shortcuts, but my only concern is if they have an existing shortcut on a memory stick. I have hidden everything in that drive with the idea that they can mess with what they can't see.
  7. Hi Duke5A, i have tried that but when I disable read, they can't access the software.
  8. We have recently been having an issue where by students have worked out that by going New - Shortcut they can access our public drive which gives them access to the networked programs, even though if they try to access it normally through windows explorer it gives them a restricted error. Has anybody else had this issue and how have you resolved it? I have prevented the creation of new shortcuts through a registry change and have tried to disable lnk files being run in home drives and usb sticks using the software restriction policy which hasn't worked (thanks Microsoft - another success). I just want to stop existing shortcuts being run. Help!
  9. We have recently received Meraki WAP, but I cannot get it to connect to the Meraki dashboard. I have found that I need to unblock some ports and IP addresses through SWGFL, but I don't know which ones they are. The document that supposed to tell me this no longer seems to work http://tinyurl.com/y79une3. Has anyone got the information or know where i can get it? Many thanks
  10. I am at the end of my tether, I am going to join the circus as the person who sticks his head in the lions mouth, as I think it will be less stressful than working in a school and working with Office 365. Right rant over, to problem. Before the latest Office 365 update, I had xml files unblocked for attachments and everything was working fine. Since the update xml files are blocked again and i cannot unblock them I have gone through the process with powershell again and again, but still xml files are blocked. Has anyone else managed to sort this? Or is anyone else having this issue? Also why for the love of all that is holy, do we have to go through a long process with powershell to unblock attachments. Wouldn't it be easier to just have a page within the admin login to manage this sort of thing. Again rant over and I apologise for the rant, having a bad day. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
  11. Hi all, We are getting very slow logons on the 10 PCs in the Library. The PCs in there are relatively new and we do not seem to have this problem anywhere else. Is there a way that i can record the steps taken to logon via a script etc? I will be checking the cabling over half-term and I have setup an NTP server. Is there anything else anyone can recommend to diagnose the problem? Many thanks
  12. I have reinstalled The Dude, but not enabled any SNMP monitoring, ill leave it overnight to see if it crashes or not. I am starting to believe SNMP could be the cause.
  13. I had The Dude installed on a Server, but I have tried it on 2 server running server 2008 and server 2008r2 but it crashed both. I have to admit I couldn't find anything in the event logs that explained the crash. I did setup SNMP on everything, could that have something to do with it?
  14. Cheers Vegas, I should have said we are using Spiceworks for inventory and helpdesk. I have looked at Spiceworks for the monitoring but I am not that keen on the mapping side of it. The reason I like The Dude so much is the mapping side, it is easy to see if something goes down, I want to be able to have a large monitor on the wall in the office and be able to see at a glance if something has gone down/wrong.
  15. I have been looking around for a free (important) network monitoring software, I have tried a few different ones including The Dude, Total Network Monitor, PRTG and The Dude is the closest that came to doing what I wanted, but unfortunately it kept crashing the PC it was loaded onto. It would be fine while I was using it, but in the morning when I came in the PC would need to be restarted as it had crashed, once I had un-installed The Dude it was fine. So my questions are has anyone else had this issue with The Dude? And can anyone recommend a good free Network Monitoring software? I have looked at Nagios, but I am not that experienced with Linux and it sounds like it will take a lot of work initially to get up and running? I have also looked at Shinken, but I just could not get it installed and working (probably having a dumb moment). Cheers
  16. A bit late, but can I request a PM for the dude setup please @sdc Tried Nagios, Shinken can't get my head around them. Thanks
  17. Doh!!! Thats worked, sorry mate having a simple moment.
  18. I have just installed Printmaster, got it all setup but when I go to add a consumable I get the following cost error. {doc_root}\PrintMaster\consumables.php(120): include('C:\inetpub\wwwr...') {doc_root}\PrintMaster\views\consumables\addedit.p hp(35): Consumable->getCost() {doc_root}\PrintMaster\views\consumables\addedit.p hp(35): fActiveRecord->__call('getCost', Array) {doc_root}\PrintMaster\inc\flourish\fActiveRecord. php(906): fActiveRecord->get('cost') {doc_root}\PrintMaster\inc\flourish\fActiveRecord. php(1821) The column specified, cost, does not exist Any help would be appreciated.

  20. I have managed to create a report in SIMS and I have got commandreporter running the report and dumping the data into an xml file. Could anyone point me in the right direction, how I would go about extracting the data into a webpage? Many thanks
  21. Just had Capita dial in, so that I could re-create the issue for them and they could see it happen. But as you probably guessed everything worked perfect no problems at all. Its like these systems do it on purpose.
  22. In the last couple of weeks we have been experiencing issues with SLG whereby when staff have filled in the attendance register or mark sheet, click save they are kicked out of SLG and taken back to the login screen. I have made sure that they are all selecting Private on the login screen, which should allow them to stay logged in for at least 300 minutes. I have contacted CAPITA and they claimed the it was a timeout issue with our ISP, seemed to strange to me but I still contacted SWGFL. SWGFL said it wasn't anything to do with them and that it was application error. They gave me some advice and said I should update IE or try a different browser. So I installed Firefox on a staff laptop and asked them to try it, that was this morning. At 3pm the member of staff came in and said that in the last lesson they were kicked out of SLG 4/5 times. We have a hosted solution of SIMS Learning Gateway, but SIMS is running on a server which is about 4 years old, with server 2003 installed I'm wondering if this is something to do with the spring update, I installed it late. On Monday I was going to also try removing the last few filtering rules I entered over the last few weeks. Is anyone else experiencing these issues? Any advice would be very appreciated, as I am getting greyer by the day with this.
  23. I want to display total and individuals house points on the intranet page and on a display in the dining room. Having this information extracted from Sims in real time would be great though unlikely. We give reward points to students in Sims is there a way to extract this information? Does anyone else do house points and display either via intranet or a separate solution?
  24. Thanks localzuk but I'm pretty set on WDS/MDT. I use UBCD on USB but its a pain having to do it onto every PC. Running something on PXE to format the hard drive or delete the partition would make life a lot easier.
  25. Thanks Dana, how did you add gparted to the pxe boot menu?
