  1. Why do you need a discription on your pay slip to say something when the title on your contract says another? My contract title is Network Manager, as it happens it's the same on my slip (just checked) but I wouldn't care less if it said non-teaching there. It means nothing. If staff are using it as a derogatory term then frankly it's time for senior management to get involved and put an end to stupid internal politics.
  2. Actually to be a teacher you do have to be qualified. You could be considered an instructor but that's a completely different argument. You work in a school, so you are non-teaching as you're not actually teaching. It's purely a term. If it's a case of snobbery then take it up with your line manager and say you don't like being lumped in with everyone else and want to be called Support staff instead. Every IT person has to give some amount of training to staff on new equipment/software, it's part of the job and certainly doesn't make me a teacher.
  3. Are you a qualified teacher?
  4. I think I'm refered to as non-teaching which is great as I point out I'm not there to tell kids off etc when a teacher asks why I'm letting them run riot in the corridors
  5. Eve: Khaser Khan Although I don't really play it at the moment, log in, change skill and then go to the pub!
  6. GOD I wish..
  7. Check your local council websites, they're usually advertised on there then in local papers. So for you it'd be here: http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/jobs/job_listpage.htm
  8. We're undergoing regrading at the moment, I'm lumped in with all the other Network Managers in the county and have the horrible feeling that my pay will end up being slashed something awful. I'm near the top of our current banding (£26K) and expect it to drop by about £6,000. I just know they'll increase the pay for central IT staff or maintain it even though I do far more and have 10000x the responibilities
  9. Sounds similar to Netsupport school, might have a look at impero though as we're trialing NSS at the moment!
  10. We'd not be allowed to use WOL automatically, the council is trying to save electricity and is now asking us to implement power saving in the schools. Waking them up that early would cause mayhem with the council stomping it's feel and demanding it be changed.
  11. The council here has made it's own custom tracking and monitoring system for reports and electronic registration. No idea how it'll work with supply teachers though. Each teacher has classes assigned to them and can't access anyone elses so obviously this could cause problems.. Paper and pen I'm guessing is the only real solution!
  12. Might have a look at the logoff screensaver and see how well it works!
  13. Anyone know how to do this? I've several staff who persist in leaving PCs logged in even over night and over holidays. I've warned them about the security implications of this but as always they think they're above the rules that apply to everyone else. I know by default there's no way of forcing a log out after X number of minutes but what about 3rd party software? ANY help is appreciated, I'm now at the stage where I don't care if staff lose work if they've been away from the PC for 30mins +
  14. Making a mac/PC duel system school is a bad idea if you ask me. Go either one way or another but not duel system. I've got macs and PCs in my school and have no end of trouble because of it. Granted OSX is a lot better than OS9 ever was for networking but I still continue to have compatibility problems between filemaker, office, appleworks versions on each. OSX is also amazingly easy to break once students figure out how to, pray they don't or keep a mac image handy! Macs, like PCs are very easy to pick up and I'd be surprised if you really had to train staff more than the basics. Mac/PC are so similar that most things are almost identical or intuitive anyway.
  15. Most laptops allow you to disable the wireless on/off switch in the BIOS, it's what I've done on all of my Dell laptops. Another options would be to check inside the driver setup program, all of my Dell intel cards are set to wait for a network connection before attempting to log in. Essentially what happens is a student turns the laptop on, puts in their login details, the computer then displays a popup saying "obtaining IP address", "authenticating" etc. If it finds no network it throws up an error and staff know to check the base station is plugged in properly. Sorry not sure about the script you mention, wouldn't it assume that the student could log in? which on most laptops wouldn't be reliable as it'd have to authenticate with the domain unless the profile was cached locally.
  16. The RM symbol puts me off It looks ok, font at the bottom is very olde world looking to me though, but I've always prefered bold style text
  17. Colourscheme isn't great but the website itself is perfectly OK. As mentioned above though how did it take 7 months? I'd expect a competent IT person to knock that out in a few weeks with little or no knowledge of making websites!
  18. Anyone have a standard "blurb" about it? I'd like to put a notice up in the library, however I tend to go over the top and start telling people I'll burn them at the stake etc etc. network admin from hell, that's me !
  19. cheers guys, I'd gone and chatted to the head of computing and we'd more or less agreed that it's fine. I'm not seeing anything that someone in the same room can't see and as it's usually blatantly obvious when the kids are using bebo etc I'm hardly intruding on privacy. I wish senior management would take the issue of proxy servers and network security as a whole more serious in here!
  20. Perhaps it's just me but it seems odd that your servers have this problem after the clocks go forward a hour! I wouldn't have thought that the NTP was even capable of causing that error, perhaps check all hardware to check that something isn't spitting out an odd error when you boot up? I know I've had problems with my old NT4 server lately over a SCSI error that's only shown for 1sec on startup!
  21. Midget - any proxy server on the net gets 90% around it 8O
  22. Moral or not? I'm a little uneasy about doing it without the student knowing they're being watched, the computers in question are in the library and not in a suite of computers but also they're the ones which are abused the most. The head of computing doesn't see a problem with it and actually thinks it'd deter a lot of the problems we've been having with students trying to bypass proxy servers etc. However I'm not convinced and see it as an invasion of privacy, although part of me thinks that they shouldn't have anything to hide. Confused, some guidance please good edugeeks I knew I shouldn't have gone to the pub last night
  23. Ebay is blocked for students here but not staff although it's still filtered for bad words (because obviously adults shouldn't know any!) There are ways around symantec web security though as the students have found out much to my annoyance!
  24. It's primarily for the teachers, I don't really need the management side unless it does something mindblowing. I also know I'll struggle to get funding for it unless it's classroom orientated, software for me is never a priority!
  25. Cheers Mr Hawkins! I'm trying to get the Education department involved as I know for a fact this isn't used anywhere else in West Lothian and could save a bloody ton of time supporting and make lessons more fun (from what I've seen this week).
