I imagine you would not allow relay from your local domain / local hosts. and allow them only to send to certain people by using the recipients_reject_except = [email protected] command perhaps?? dont know if exim supports a hashed or plain text file e.g. recipients_reject_except = /etc/exim/whitelist that might work ??/? :\

if you mean the students use exim... I can imagine its muchly similar to postfix,,, try reading through this : http://www.exim.org/exim-html-3.20/doc/html/spec_toc.html#TOC813 it should be somewhere in your exim documentation. most likely ALMOST the same commands i can imagine. Sorry that i canrt help further because i dont use exim and the idea of learning about another mail transfer agent i dont have to know scares me :\... good luck!!

May be just being supid here, but isnt squd a HTTP proxy / cache. Does it handle e-mails? or do you mean your trying to filter who they send e-mail to through there webmail? cause i could imagine you would find that hard :\... how do the students send and recieve e-mail?

use a PC Floppy drive that you know works... run this commmand: CHKDSK A: /F /R If it still says tough then your going to need to use a program such as GETDATABACK for FAT. download the trial as you can recover files one at a time with it... Good luck!!

We use postfix here, to use we would add the following in our main.cf: smtpd_recipient_restrictions = reject_unauth_destination, check_client_access hash:/etc/postfix/client_exceptions, check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/sender_exceptions, reject_rbl_client list.dsbl.org, reject_rhsbl_sender dsn.rfc-ignorant.org You would add whitelisted clients to /etc/postfix/client_exceptions and people you dont want restricted you would add to /etc/postfix/sender_exceptions hope this helps :S sorry that its not for squid etc.

Good luck with that googlemad ... psychometric tests seem silly to me, there are alot of people i know, who are intellegent, as in, they would pass them with flying colours.... but yet still have NO clue when it comes to ICT at all... I also know lots of people who can blurb out lots about IT, thinking they know everything (they are the dangerous ones!)... At least i know enough to know that i dont know everything!!

Can someone talk to me about the use of Linux as thin clients in schools?? Ive spent a while before making a computer authenticate against AD. but then its hard to make a policy for them, you can edit the skel folder to put things on there desktop and in the KDE auto run folder, I made a script which asks them there domain username and password once they have logged in and mounts a folder on the desktop to there work area... Maybe im going about this in a very stupid way but up here its VERY hard to find a linux boffin, so most of the things i end up reading how-to's, putting ! commands into the debian bot on the irc room or reading my debian bible book. (its not very detailed) If anyone could give me a hand or perhaps let me visit a school where you use thin clients or desktop linux machines that happily authenticate against AD and allow students access to there workarea's, while still being secure enough for them not to break everything. It was also possible we found to mount /home/mailoutlog on another system with a windows share, or a linux share... , for all you who like your networked backup...

We looked into this as we have a mail server, which was almost ready for the students to use.. We use postfix here and one of the commands in our main.cf file was: always_bcc = mailoutlog Which means EVERY e-mail sent or recieved would end up also written to an inbox called "mailoutlog", just a standard user with an almost impossible password for security... We could then as root archive the /home/mailoutlog file to DVD or CD, every few months... as most e-mails are small... perfect <3

Buy something really cheap, like a small amp + speakers,, they take the phono's which is part of your composite. (the red and white ones) or you could get a pair of speaker cables, and get a FMPhono - minijack cable. Swings and roundabouts really... although the PC speakers would work out cheaper, just dont get landed with USB powered ones. Good luck!!

My guess is with the increased rate there will be more crosstalk, which will further compound the problem of using all 8 wires in the cable.. Same reason why you need an 80pin (40 real 40 shields) cable for fast IDE Drives rather than a 40pin....

Sounds silly to me, surely there'll be a problem with cross talk as there are more active wires????/ just run two cables you cheap people , even we can afford them!!!

Use an ip address scanner such as angry IP scanner... My guess would be that its most likely on a differnt range from yours.. Try the 192.168.0.1-192.168.10.254 range, i dont think it would be any higher then that. otherwise scan your network and compare MAC addresses, put the MAC address coloumb in your search, export the results to excel and then sort it... the AP should have a MAC address sticker on it somewhere!

Build it yourself we (with out VERY limited budget) got a 2 opteron , 4gbs ECC Buffered RAM, H/w RAID 5 controller /w 4 146gb scsi. 2 dvd rewriters, lovely case, £200 worth of hp hardware network card, aswell as the 2 1gbps onboard broadcoms. 600Wpsu etc... £1200 (about a year and a half ago) were building another one this year, with just one processor, 2gb RAM, with 2tb of storage, with a RAID 5 HW controller. £200 H/W based network card etc. basically just as a fast storage area, £800 delivered Just how we do things here, not enough money for any other options.... the rackmounted cases are too much ALONE without any hardware... We have a dell poweredge which the first server we built up is actually higher spec.. but the poweredge cost £5k, 5 x more for less ram less processor less hdd... infact we had to add another drive so it cost us more then that!!!

We have more servers, just not windows server 2003 ones, were porting more stuff over to linux these days... I agree that 10K is not much to spend on that much software... but when your whole IT budget is 10K a year... and out of that we have to get toner + paper i.e. we get 5K to spend... spending 10k on software.. really... just isnt going to happen!! lol we can hardly afford to replace machines.... hence,, why were porting more and more over to linux these days

We ordered a 2TB Lacie rack mounted drive from Dabs.com for about £550 to put in a different building for fire reasons.... We got it a tad cheaper because we moaned about how much stuff we were ordering... anyway, It seems fantastic... If only it would fit in the damn cabinate!! :\ oh dear. were in the process of putting it somewhere else, secure...
