Ok guys, I am really not having a lot of luck trying to install Server 16 DC core onto this server. The server is an HP ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2. I have been trying to install Server 2016 Data Centre core onto an 8gb USB drive connected into the back of the server so I can utilise the space on the 4x1 tb raid for hyper v images as suggested, but the server 2016 installer refuses to accept the USB drive as a possible install location. I have tried other USB drives, but it has made no difference. It just doesn't seem to like them. On the install options screen, it shows the drive as having a total size of 746.4gb - this is incorrect. It should be 7-8gb. I have taken the top of the server off and can see that there is a vacant MINI SAS slot but no USB slots or SD slots available for me to plug anything in to install the OS to. If I install Server 2016 DC GUI version, as soon as I install Hyper V, the server will not boot up. I have had an ongoing call open with HP for this issue since November and they have STILL not got to the bottom of it, despite a BIOS reset, various iLO updates and a new main board. The whole thing is getting a little beyond a joke now as I still have an appliance not fit to be used. Any ideas.

Works a treat. Thanks! N.B. This failed several times initially because of a failure to establish a WMI connection to the computer. This was rectified by disabling the firewall on the computer in question.

Did look into this and some people suggested getting Server 2016 Data Centre, but it is quite expensive to purchase. And after spending months (I think this is now the third month) trying to install it to our server, it just doesn't work. I have had two HP engineers out this week and they are baffled. We can install server no trouble. As soon as you install the Hyper V component and bounce the server, it gets stuck booting and never boots up. We have wiped and it tried again so many times, tried different versions of server, checked the BIOS is suitably configured (Virtualisation enabled etc) and all to no avail. Has put me off a little as VMWare just went on so easily with no issues. We have version 6, and I believe we can upgrade to 6.5 which may be tricky.

Hi there, Quite a few people both on here and in similar positions to me have suggested I should virtualise our servers. We have a copy of VMWare ESXI which I believe is free for schools. Can anyone recommend if this is worth using? My thoughts are that usually if something is free, there is a catch. I have a copy of Server 2012 R2 running on it and it seems to be working quite well considering it is on an older HP ML350G6 server. I would be looking to move over our curriculum server 2016 with active directory, DHCP etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there. One of the sites I work at has RM CC4. One of the more useful features I have found with CC4 is the ability to rename a domain connected computer without having to log into it locally, remove it from the domain, log in again, change the name, reboot and then re-join to the domain. Does anyone know if and how this is possible on a vanilla install of Server 2008, 12 or 16? With Windows 8 or 10 stations. It can be really handy if, for example, a station is moved to a completely different area, or if the naming conventions are changed.

Thanks. Agreed, warranty is second to none. Had a 24 POE recently, around 7 y/o. Fan stopped working. Got a replacement one within a day. I think the warranty is life time. Pretty good if you ask me. Only suggested as many years ago, I did CCNA so am far more familiar with the iOS commands than the HP ones. Most are similar, but you don't seem to be able to get away with the shortcut phrases in terminal.

No, not as far as I have seen. They have a really old version of RM Finance. No doubt if and when they upgrade, they will do. Pretty basic stuff tbh, I am quite surprised at the number of places that don't seem to be doing it. There was no requirement for it to be recorded at my main school but I did it as I am organised and for the sake of spending an extra minute on each order, have saved myself bags of time when things like this happen. A great majority of the places I work at do not record these details. It is very basic: Make, Model, Asset No, Location.

No they don't, despite my recommendation to do this back in the summer. I only help them once a day per week. At my own school, I have cost paid, invoice number (internal), order number (internal), Supplier etc along with all of the usual asset register stuff, I also keep all copies of whatever the bursar has for any orders I do. I can pick out an order in seconds. All schools should be like this, but funding is the issue I guess. Most places don't have the resources to have someone do all of that.

Right ok. That's a pain, I thought they were L3. The newest 48 port is slightly different. It is an HP 2530-48G. Have just checked, but that is also a L2. What type of layer three do you think I would need? Layer 3 Lite, Dynamic or Advanced? I get what you mean by getting one L3 and running it as a core, but what does this do for redundancy? Presumably I would be better off replacing all of the other switches with L3 models as and when the time is right? Currently all switches are located in a shiny new rack, with cat 6 (I believe) running to each computer/printer/other device. Wiring is all fresh and new. I have no understanding of stub networks, so I am going to have to try and get my head around that. In terms of your suggestion for the VLans, would you be suggesting that the admin network would also take the Paxton traffic (the network interfaces that connect to the mag lock doors around the site)? Just trying to get my head around the configuration work involved. Thanks so much for your help, really useful. I don't want to waste funds on this site, but want it to be future-proofed and as well set ups as is possible. Had been looking at maybe getting rid of all of the switches and getting some Cisco or a proper stack, but don't think there would be the funds for that.

Hi, does anyone know if there is a quick and easy way for me to find out what some older equipment may have been worth at purchase. We had a couple of really thick burglars in one of my schools yesterday afternoon. They managed to break through three securing wires for laptops and stole them. There was an unlocked iPad docking box full of 8 iPads right next to them, but they didn't take them! They did however bag an iPad which was on another table. I wanted to get some estimated costs of what we would have paid for the items, but the laptops are from before my time and we have a new finance manager in the job now, so she can't easily find the orders. Does anyone know how I can find out roughly what we would have paid for them when they were first being sold? Obviously, I can easily find out on ebay etc what they would be worth now, but the insurance will be looking to know roughly what we paid for them when we bought them. Hi, we make use of the built in LGFL filtering (we have an Cisco LGFL firewall on site) and we have two sets of internal IP ranges one for admin: 10.232.162.0 and one for curriculum: 10.232.164.0.

Very sensible suggestion. We are LGfL. Couple of notes: We currently have a 24 port managed POE switch, the new wireless solution will have 26 APs which will mean we will need a larger POE switch. We went with the wifi solution as they offered us a very good price in exchange for our old hardware. We have always really struggled with poor wifi signal and when fortinet came in, we were very impressed with the signal range they were able to achieve in comparison with Meru. I have been really keen to get everything down on Visio for a while now, but I have had real trouble getting the right stencils. I have sourced the nearest to the real ones I could and put something together as attached. It is far from perfect, and doesn't have anything about printers, but gives a good idea of the current network topology. Basically, at the moment, there are two networks in the school. An admin one (office staff computers, office printers, CCTV boxes, premises manager and Paxton Access Security Control Doors) and a curriculum one (class computers, ICT suite, Juniper managed wifi, all other school printers, display screens). We have a number of servers, all with multiple NICs. There are two smaller 10 port switches, one for admin one for curriculum. These deal with all of the iLO connections for the respective servers along with a NIC connection for each. Each server is connected to both the admin and curriculum NIC which allows some printers to be shared across both NICs (someone like a class based deputy, could print to her office (admin) printer from her class. Current servers are as follows: HP ML350 G9 - Curriculum Server HP ML350 G5 - Admin Server HP Proliant DL320e Gen 8 V2 - soon to be replacement Admin Server running Server 2016 DC with virtualisation enabled. HP ML350 G6 - VMWare VSphere server running 1 x Server 2012 for WSUS and Sophos EC 1 x Windows 10 testing image and 1 x Windows 10 to run the Paxton Access Data Server Service for admin connected computers. HP Storageworks X1600 G2 Network Storage System for shared admin and curriculum files and onsite backups. I anticipate that the school will move to VIOP telephony in the near future and with the new wifi solution, we are going to need to implement Vlans to get the best use out of it as at present, the wireless solution will only work with curriculum systems. Hi there, I have been working with a school in London for quite some time. They have about 4 48 port layer 3 managed HP Switches and then several 24 and 8 port HP managed switches. They currently don't use Vlans but have two physical networks running on the site. They are due to get a new managed wireless solution from Fortinet and I am keen to get their network up to scratch before hand. Can anyone recommend a company or business in the London area I may be able to get in for some consultancy and advice? I am not sure if it would be more cost effective to remove the switches they currently have (which are about 6 years old) and buy a proper stack and then set up Vlans. Just not too sure on how to proceed as not worked with a school of this size, usually only work at smaller primaries. If anyone who works at a larger primary/secondary has any advice, I would be keen to hear from you. Seems sensible to me to utilise the current switches and get some Vlans running, maybe one for the wireless, curriculum and management, Paxton Access (one for VOIP for future) etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there. I seem to have a problem with the Group Policy for our domain controller. I was looking for Computer Configuration>Policies>Administrative Templates>Network but could not find it. I have logged into another 2012 server at a different school and observed that Administrative Templates there does have the correct folders and is called Administrative Templates: Policy Definitions. At the problem school, it is called Administrative Templates: Policy Definitions (ADMX Files). How can I add the default folders back? If I right click on Add/Remove Templates, nothing is listed in the list.

Hi there, I am somewhat confused. I have a standalone HP system with one 110gb SSD and a 2tb conventional HDD. All of the My Documents folders are redirected to a new folder on the 2tb drive so that the SSD only has the OS and any software which has to be installed in C:\Program Files. Recently, the C: (SSD) was showing low on space. When running TreeSize, I was surprised to see that my user profile is showing as using 48.8gb on C. This can't be right as everything is redirected. Sure enough, after manually checking each My Docs folder for my account on C:\, there is nothing inside of most of them, not even anything worth 1mb. It looks as though most of it is taken up by Adobe Lightroom caches. Is there any way of clearing these and does anyone know if this could mess the software up?
