Both interfaces have the correct SNMs: 22 bit on existing network and 24 on new subnet. There are no ACLs - the router has been reset to factory settings and has only basic configuration. Internet > SMOOTHWALL > Main Network > Router > Wi-Fi is exactly how it is.

Sounds very complicated for what I'm trying to achieve! Basically, I need to allow wireless access for some visitors next week in the classroom next to my office. They need to be able to access the internet without having to manually configure their favourite browser on their personal device (laptop, iPad, smartphone, etc) with the proxy settings deployed via GPO to domain computers. I have no time or budget to buy / install a Layer 3 switch, configure VLANs or buy / install a proper managed wireless solution. I already have a Cisco 1841 router and a Draytek Vigor access point. The AP will allow access purely by entering a WPA key and I have configured transparent proxying on our Smoothwall box. So, Fe0/0 on router has (say) IP address of 10.1.100.1 on new subnet 10.1.100.0/24. Router configured to be a DHCP server for that subnet allocating 10.1.100.151 to 10.1.100.254, DG of 10.1.100.1. Laptop receiving IP address in this range wirelessly. Fe0/1 on router has (say) IP address of 10.1.1.2 on existing subnet 10.1.1.0/22. Smoothwall box has an IP of 10.1.1.3. Static route set "ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.1.1.3" Show IP route has: Gateway of last resort is 10.1.1.3. 10.0.0.0/8 is variably subnetted. 2 subnets, 2 masks. C 10.1.100.0/24 is directly connected, FastEthernet0/0 C 10.1.1.0/22 is directly connected, FastEthernet0/1 S* 0.0.0.0/0 [1/0] via 10.1.1.3 From the router I can ping the WAP and the main network. From the laptop I can ping the WAP and both router interfaces but not anything on the main network.

Glad I understood correctly - the way my brain is this week I'm massively surprised. There's a more fundamental issue that is causing the problem, namely that the router isn't routing! Problem is I'm not sure if it's the router that's broken or I'm not configuring it correctly.

It's a long, sordid story about trying to give wireless access for a meeting the Head is having one evening next week. We don't have managed wireless or Layer 3 switches and you need to manually enter proxy settings to access the internet if you're not on the domain. My cheap and quick solution was to use a spare router I already have and connect a wireless access point, such that all the user would need to do is enter the password for the wireless.

No and it would not have occurred to me to do so. If the traffic is being sent from a router with an interface on the same subnet as the Smoothwall box why would I need to add the other subnet? And more importantly, where?

It's a long time since I did any Cisco stuff and I have a problem that is driving me mad. If I set a static route on a router, does the next hop address have to be the IP address of the router interface or can it be an IP address on the subnet the router is connected to? e.g. I have two subnets 10.1.1.0/24 and 10.1.2.0/24 and the interfaces on the router are 10.1.1.1 and 10.1.2.1. I want to route all internet traffic on 10.1.1.0 to a Smoothwall box 10.1.2.2 so is this valid or not: ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.1.2.2 Please note I need to use this router - VLANs are not an option!

We nearly got a Patterdale from the local dog rescue when Sandy died three years ago. At the time it was too soon and in some respects it's a good job as my wife was made redundant so now can't get home at lunch times due to her new job being 20 miles away. Is that something you have been told or can you provide a link to a definitive statement? The reason I ask is that I was told that all I needed to buy (annually) was a Remote Desktop Services Unlimited External Users External Connector.

Why doesn't it cover Office? If Office is on a school computer being accessed by an employee or pupil I don't see why it wouldn't be covered.

As long as the processor supports it you should be fine. I bought a 2007 Dell Optiplex 745 on eBay for £150 to put VMWare on and it works fine. Check the compatibility here: VMware Compatibility Guides

Thanks. I've looked at the document I found on there from January 2012 (17910) but that indicates XP 32-bit will be supported on the Summer update. I wondered if there was a newer SIMS Technical Roadmap or if I'm reading it wrong.

Do you have a link to a source to prove this? I will need it to show to SLT. Still XP / 2003 here although we have some 2008 / 2008R2 servers. It has been stable and reliable, allowing us to do exactly what we need to do which is vital due to the limited tech support personnel to machine ratio we have. I'd started to plan for upgrading about 18 months ago but for a variety of reasons that I won't go into I am no further forward.

After replacing the storage server over the summer students were upgraded from 150MB to 1GB and staff from 150MB to 5GB (they had previously been on the same logical drive). This should be more than enough for the foreseeable future but there is the capacity to increase to 2GB and 10GB respectively. Some Year 11 ICT students have already needed theirs doubling but I have been assured this is only because of a specific unit that only a handful are doing.

We used to try resetting Serif when the user loads it (I think you hold shift down when you click on the shortcut) and then agreeing to everything. If that didn't work we just deleted the existing profile.

This is a point that I have raised here. I know that UltraSurf can bypass proxy servers so I have ensured that Sophos blocks UltraSurf and it's ilk but I also know there are certain 6th Form students that will have UltraSurf installed on their laptops before they even bring them in.

We're kinda sorta looking at it, but only in the context of allowing 6th Form students to use their laptops in the Common Room.
