  1. Yes the hyper-v is set with legacy. Actually I seem to have an issue on another machine also... Its looking like its a problem with WDS. Fingers crossed its a service not running. But I have just used WDS to create an image. I will investigate
  2. hi I am booting hyper-v vm in hope of imaging using WDS. I have tried several of my deploy images, but I keep getting no images available shift-f10 command prompt shows me that my network settings seem good. I can ping server, net use \\xx.x.x.x\reminst to view files. But I still cannot browse images in WDS client The are no images available Anyone help? Thanks
  3. I am not sure why but I have ended up with a much smaller image than I expected
  4. I will try that after this run fails! I find it a slightly misleading use of English in the capture dialog box. 'You may also choose to upload the new image directly....' after it has been created on local disk!
  5. Hi I am trying to capture an image with WDS It seems that it will have to be saved to local HDD before being transferred to server. I thought there would be an option to just load it up to server without using local HDD but it doesn't seem to be the case. Unfortunately the local hdd will not have enough room to store an image of itself Is there a way round this. I have tried to add a shared drive but been unable to in the WDS capture interface Thanks
  6. Hi Am measuring up this tape drive Quantum LTO-5 Tape Drive Half Height Internal SAS (TC-L52AN-EZ) - www.misco.co.uk The server I was hoping to fit it in is a HP ML115 G5 but the housing from the bay that I removed has dimensions 4cm x 14.5cm I was wondering if anyone has a tape drive in a HP ML115 G5 and any suggestions on tape drives to fit Thanks
  7. Hi I decided to take the plunge and update our server and take it up to SP1, mainly because of the pain in the backend that is IE11 on the clients and having no ability to configure it centrally from the server. Anyway that aside, I updated it at weekend and it all seemed fine. I could log in and it all seemed wonderful, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Yes. Err NO... Come in this morning and I cannot remotely log in. I go locally to the machine and login but get this message "The object invoked has disconnected from its clients" So basically I have to wait till later so I can reboot the damned thing. I wondered if anyone has encountered this error and managed to fix it? Thanks.
  8. No. I need to service pack 1 it before I can put IE11 on. worried it might screw server up so been procrastinating, and getting time can be tricky. No alternatives?
  9. Thanks for help Hmm I must be missing something as I do not have this option. Any particular admx files I should be installing for this that you know of? This lot by any chance Download Administrative Templates (ADMX) for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 from Official Microsoft Download Centre
  10. I am logging into Server 2008 R2 and using gpmc.msc That's the view of my path in gpmc.msc User Configuration/Policies/Classic Administrative Templates(ADM)/Windows Components/Internet Explorer/??
  11. it appears that the item Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Compatibility View does not exist in classic administrative templates. So I presume I need a new template for IE11, but am unsure
  12. Hi Cheers. Am not sure if this is actually for Server 2012. My current group policy does not seem to manage IE 11. I had to start using Group policy preferences. I will have a look now
  13. Hi Thought I would start a new thread for this issue, although related to my last post. Seems I cannot find a way to control the Compatibility View Settings in IE 11 centrally through group policy Does anyone have a way to overcome this ? Seems that we have quite a few sites that need adding to compatibility list to work properly. Thanks
  14. Ok just reset the max value to 99.9.9.9. It was 10.x.x.x or something thereabouts. I will try this out asap Cheers
  15. Thanks again. This actually sounds familiar too
  16. Thanks for replies So when you say I don't need to install IE 11 to manage it.... how do I manage it? Cause group policy doesn't seem to manage it
  17. Hi I am having problems with group policy settings on browsers now that clients have updated to IE 11. I am unsure, due to information overload from google searches, whether the way to remedy this is to run IE 11 on the server and use group policy preferences. If this is the case I need Service Pack 1 on my R2 server. I don't want to do this just in case...... But if its the only way I better get on with it. Is this the only way? Anyone any ideas? Thanks
  18. Hi I seem to be having trouble getting group policy to allow restricted users using windows 7 pro to have access to network connections or ncpa.cpl I used to have the group policies in XP lax enough for access to network connections, but am finding that windows 7 is not giving me access to anything other than wireless connection from the taskbar. I have been into group policy and tried find solution within : User Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Classic Administrative Templates (ADM) -> Network -> Network Connections I am also not sure about the entry for the 'Classic Administrative Templates (ADM)' policy and whether that is legacy and causing the issue. Anyway I wondered if anyone had any pointers for allowing access for restricted user to Network Connections via the taskbar Thanks
  19. Thanks I don't think its even possible for me to do this in theory as I would be unable to get the system state to recover to a different machine. So I will probably have to wait till its a necessity. Only other option is to have a complete mock up DC with users and computer accounts and try and run restores on that.
  20. Scary
  21. Would anyone entertain Bacula?
  22. Do you use that to backup the whole hyper-v server, or just the VM's? Ta
  23. I like virtualisation for some things, but others it makes me fearful!! recovering my hypervisor if I had to What do you use to backup your virtual server hypervisor? I also seem to have some issues using citrix vdi in a box also, performance issues, so am unable to utilize the hyperv server I have to host a RODC as am concerned about more performance issues on the vdi vms on there
  24. Thanks Not sure I want to take images, sounds good but am unsure. The environment is standard physical DC, no exchange or SIMS My recovery plan.... well I have another post on that, but I am still having issues trying out a dummy run on a non production server at moment. Getting a system state backup only is proving tricky for some reason (file system of backup storage I think) So recovery plan question I cannot fully answer, but already the issues I come across with windows back up makes me want to move to 3rd party software. If I was to image with acronis, I suppose doing a dry run would be equally as difficult if I was trying just to restore system state to another machine? These test recoveries are proving to be tricky. Having to think of ways to recover to a non production server without causing a conflict with the production server. But thanks for input I will look at these products.
  25. Hello Anyone any recommendations for backup software? I am currently using Server 2008 R2 built in back up but am after something 3rd party and better. Thanks
