Hello (Again)!! I need to hide the path of my home folders using a GPO. Currently if you open My Computer I have three mapped drives:- Shared Drive (S:) Public Drive (P:) User1 (\\server\home) (K:) I could do with the user drive appearing something like..... User1 (K:) Thanks...... John

The desktop widget works fine on Win7, but I need to have a similar desktop tray on XP Pro. Something that the kids can easily click onto to logoff or shutdown a PC. Be great if it fits in the bottom right hand corner. Thanks.

Partly fixed !!! The temporary profile error (see screen shot) was my fault and was due to the fact this test Win7 PC had been a member of a W2K3 domain and I had logged on with the same two student names; so they had SID's from another domain!!. . See.... A temporary profile is loaded after you log on to a Windows Vista-based system I deleted all the sub keys that had any mention of student1 and student2. That fixed the temporary profile log error. I'm still having some issues with the profiles not always taking effect first time and I'm sure this is due to services starting too quickly on the workstation. Any help there.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. This is on my test 2008 R2 server and Win7 PC, so I’m going to have another look at it tomorrow (Sunday) and change access rights etc to prove a point. By the way, it happens to the three test users that the “students” group policy is applied to. I have setup some mapped drives and restrictions in the policy, they work ok, every time. Thanks again…. I have setup Desktop and Start Menu re-direction on my test server. Something I did on Server 2003 and it seemed to work ok. I am having a bit of a "hit and miss" affair with Server 2008 R2. The re-direction works ok, but I have to log the user off then on again before I get the correct desktop shortcuts and start menu. I'm sure this is down to the way the policy is running...here is the error from the event log:- "The Group Policy Client Side Extension Folder Redirection was unable to apply one or more settings because the changes must be processed before system startup or user logon. The system will wait for Group Policy processing to finish completely before the next startup or logon for this user, and this may result in slow startup and boot performance." Once I log the user off and back on again I get the following two errors in the event log:- First: "Windows failed to apply the Folder Redirection settings. Folder Redirection settings might have its own log file. Please click on the "More information" link." Second: "The Group Policy settings for the user were processed successfully. New settings from 2 Group Policy objects were detected and applied." Each time I also get a pop up saying "You have been logged on with a temporary profile" (see screen shot) and a number of Temp profiles are created in users. BUT - the desk top is now ok, so is the start menu, both of which are on the server. Ref to the fault is found here, but no fix. Event ID 1112 ? Application of Group Policy Anyone out there seen and fixed this fault????

Does anyone know where I can download any freeware Log off / Shut-down button's /Panel for XP or Win7. I know I can create a shortcut to do the samething, but I have seen a small control panel that sits in the right-hand side of the screen which look really neat. Any help please.

Hello al and HELP please...... I am trying to configure desktop and start menu re-direction on Server 2008 R2 on my test virtual server setup. It works ok on my 2003 server with Windows XP and a test Windows 2007 PC, but on server 2008 the re-direction will not apply. I think this might be an issue with the fact the Win7 PC has already had desktop and start menu re-direction apply via a 2003 GPO. The share is correct and can be accessed by the test user accounts. Is there a simple way of disabling the fast user switching in Win7 so I can go back to a normal XP logon style screen i.e. CTRL/ALT/DEL, choose domain and enter user name and password. Does anyone know if there is a different front end logon screen option available for Win7 to allow children to select their group, then their name from a drop down box – a bit like Winsuite. Have a look at the info I found on the Alice support site......this is the issues I'm having but the replies tell you it can be fixed but does not tell you how!!! can anyone please help. Gallery viewer will not load at startup - Alice Community When I load alice I get the following error: "Unable to create the gallery viewer". This does NOT happen when logged in as an administrator but none of my students get to login as administrator Error details below: Unable to create the gallery viewer We had the same problem, but on our system it was caused by folder redirection pointing to a read only share. When Alice 2.0 loads it acesses the foloing registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\desktop If the path that is in that key points to an area that the users has no write permison then the Gallery will fail to load and the user will get a permison error when the user exits. ------------------------------------------------- Here how I have fixed it: My roaming profiles mean that my users will never have access to save things to the desktop, And all of my users are redirected to a single desktop area which is read only. Once my users have logged in, the desktop has been cached on the local machine. This allows me to change the relevant HKCU entry using a vbs script(mentioned above) and it won't affect the desktop for that session. -------------------------------------------------- It work like this: The alice shortcut points to a batch file (see below for why) The batch file runs a vbs script and then launches alice For some reason, using objshell.run to lauch Alice in the same vbs script as the registry change won't work, the registry puts itself right before Alice has a chance to run, and you end up with the smae error. If group policy refreshes during the login session, then alice is already running and doesn't care. On the next login, the registry key is changed back to a redirected share.

Check what is running on the host machine. My host machine run's very little and most of my virtual machines run at very low CPU rate. Also make sure you only dedicate one CPU and dont leave your host machine short of memory.

I cant seem to get my virtual network adapters to connect to the network - see screen shot. I cant ping the outside world from any of my Windows PC's but the funny thing is I don't have the same issue with Ubuntu Re-Mix which connects to the outside world without any problems running in Vmware 7 It was suggested that I changed the VMware network drivers to Intel pro 100/1000 ?? Anyone got the answer?? Many thanks.

Hello all, The network adaptors are bridged and the VM machine's (Server 2003 and Windows XP) can communicate ok, I just cant get to the outside world. I'm interested in James comments about using an Intel driver instead of the VMware driver. Where do I need to change this? can you please let me know. Many thanks again.... John

Hello All, I'm looking for two things if any one can help? 1. I need a way of logging on students by selecting their full names or perhaps a colour. These are special needs children who would find it difficult typing a user name and password. This is the sort of thing Winsite allows you to do - select a group name then a user name. I want to use a GPO to control the desktops, but need a "dead" simple method to allow the children to log on. 2. I need an application that will place on the desktop an option to shut down or log off the PC without having to select start, shutdown etc. The sort of thing thats on the desktop of Classmaster 5. Hi all, and many thanks to al who have set a reply. Finally traced the fault to the HP USB printer plugged into the USB port on the back of the server. Once this was removed the USB hard disk burst into life and all was ok. I then plugged back the printer and the drive continued to work. BUT, if the drive was unplugged then any external storage device plugged in we got the same error. Goes to show what problems other USB devices can cause. Lets hope USB3 fixes some of these faults. Hi I have a HP Proliant ML350 server that will no longer recognise any external USB hard drives. The error that pops up says “USB device not Recognised” and says one of the devices connected to the PC has malfunctioned. It has not, as the drive works ok on other PC’s and laptops. This problem happens on all four USB ports, but the ports are ok with our USB printer. Sounds like some sort of corruption within Server 2003. I have “googled” the problem and tried a couple of fixed with no luck. This fault happens on any storage device attached i.e. pen drives, external HDD, card reader etc. See screen shot. I have updated all the drivers on the server with no luck. Any quick fixes ?? Looking at the response from google - I don't think so. John School ICT Suites and Servers

Has anybody had any experience of OpenDNS as a content filter system? It looks good to me, but as I understand it is not free for over a certain amount of users. Is it worth taking a look at?
