Hello all, I have a student and staff GPO setup, and they work well. Controlling desktops, start menus, security etc. They are currently applied to OU's containing staff and students. What I want is for the GPO to only apply if a users logs-on to a certain workstation - i.e. in the suite or onto a netbook. This is mostly for the staff who I want to allow control of their own laptop, but are then under control of a GPO when they log onto a computer in the suite or Netbook Most of the restrictions in the GPO are under USER so wont apply to a workstation only. But I do I set-up a policy that allows a teacher total control of their own laptop but enforces restrictions if they log onto a suite computer. Thanks, John

Has anyone got any experience of WebAnyWhere internet connection and content filter solution. Our school is think about moving, the cost for set-up and the first year is around £4,620 on a 40MB connection dropping to around £3,620 for second and third year; 36 month contract. Hello All - Has anybody got an information about a system (I think its a card) that allows one PC to run multiple monitors, mice and keyboards. It sounds like the card allows some sort of virtualization but locally on the PC. Is there anyone out there know what I'm talking about or even has it in use. Thanks everyone for your help. Really, the advice is not to use the printer drivers that come with Server 2008 R2, but download the latest 64/32bit drivers from the manufactures web site and use them.

Hello all, I am having major problems installing XP 32 bit drivers to my 2008 R2 server. I have two printers, LaserJet 2700 and a LaserJet 4100. There is a simple VBS script to install the printers on the workstation at login. It seems to have worked ok with a test Windows 7 32bit machine, but I have a feeling Win7 has loaded the driver and it has not come from the server. I know I need to load the XP 32bit drivers and have downloaded both the "driver only" and the Universal Print driver but I cant get R2 to load them via "Print Management > Mange Sharing > Addition Drivers and ticking X86 and pointing to the un-packed driver. This produces an error telling me the location does not contain driver for the requested processor architecture. I have install the printer has a local printer on a test XP client, then created a new printer port which pointed to the printer share (\\server\Laserjet2700), that works OK, but I feel it picking up the driver locally. I cant do that for all 55 PC's !! So after reading lots of pages on the internet I am none the wiser - Some pages state there is a way of installing it locally and then uploading it to the server?? Anyone know the secret?? Thanks, John

Hello all, Can anybody help with the following questions about DansGuardian. 1. I take it the machine running the software requires two network cards. One set to the local network address with users looking at the proxy port, and the other set to the same IP address range as your firewall?? - so its "IN" one end and "OUT" the other? 2. I have read some guides about configuring the software - is there any REALLY good HOW TO guides which will take you through it step by step. 3. The "bolt-on" for Smoothwall Express, is there any good and simple HOW TO guides for getting that working. 4. What is the cost for School Guardian for around 400 users ?? Can anybody please tell me how to stop the last user who had logged onto a Windows 7 PC displaying when CTRL/ALT/DEL is pressed. I have an OU called Students, and a GP applied. I have set the following as shown here..... Do not display last user name Windows setting (dontdisplaylastusername) Interactive logon: Do not display last user name item, select Properties, and then enable. But, I can still see the last user to had successfully logged onto the PC. Help Please.... John

Desktop Layout: Stardock.com - Your Edge In Software Has anyone had a look at using Stardock Fences to deliver an organised desktop to students? Not only can this product allow you to set out a desktop inside of transparent windows, but it will also handle changed in screen resolution, so it doesn’t matter if the screen is set to 1024x768 or higher “fences” will remember and organise the layout. Just one big problem, it’s not an enterprise solution meaning that a layout can’t be delivered from a network drive. Also, the configuration can’t be locked down in anyway stopping the students changing the layout. I was wondering if anyone has had a close look at Stardock Fences and has managed to over come any of the problems and turning it into an enterprise solution for desktop management. Or perhaps you know of a different product. Thanks, John

I have been having a look at Yahoo Widgets. Does anyone know how I can get the same widgets to load for all users? I want to setup a volume control, clock, logoff and shutdown widget, but need a method of getting the same widgets to load at start-up for all users. Is it possible?

Has anybody seen this problem before with LZshutdown. It works ok in Windows 7 running in a VM but fails to start in Windows XP also running in a VM. Any pointers please. (See screen shot)

Hello all, I need a short script that will check if a user profile is present on the local C: drive, and if it is it will then do a task. I was thinking along the lines of:- If exits C:\users\%username% then……. Or If exits “C:\Documents and Settings\%username%” then…… But it seems to be falling over with the following error after it is run….. C:\users\student1 was unexpected at this time So the user name is identified but the script stops Any ideas? Thanks John

Sorry, not been around for a while. I did fix the problem by disabling file synchronisation on the home folders. I did it on the caching tab of the share, in my case "home$" Simple FIX. The following maybe of some help, but stops all synchronisation.... File Synchronisation – Stopping You may wish to prevent file and folder synchronisation taking place when a user logs off. If so, you will need to edit the two group polices as described below. a) Run group policy editor and navigate to “Default Domain Policy” right click and choose edit. b) Choose Computer Configuration >Administrative Templates > Networking > Offline files. Make the following changes: Allow or disallow use of offline files features Disable Synchronize all offline files when logging on Disable Synchronize all offline files when logging off Disable Synchronize all offline files before suspend Disable Remove “Make Available Offline” Enabled Prevent the use of offline file folders Enabled Prohibit “Make available Offline” for those files and folders Disable c) Navigate to “Default Domain Policy” right click and choose edit. d) Choose Computer Configuration >Administrative Templates > Networking > Offline files. Allow or disallow use of offline files features Disable NEXT e) Right click on the “home” share the select > Sharing > Caching > f) Enable the last option “Files and programs from the share will not be available offline”. If wished, this option can be enabled for all shared folders. Re-boot the server

Is there an alternative to Bginfo?. Bginfo is great but I have having problems with the different wallpapers styles I use for year groups. These are put in place by a GPO on win7 and XP. I may get around the problem with a bit more work, but I was just wondering what else is out there. All I want to do is display the user logon name and name of the PC. Many thanks…. John

Hi there. We got rid of all tape backup now and use NAS / USB drives to backup to. I use Acronis backup and recovery 10 and it works like a dream. Easy to use, FAST and dead easy to restore a file, folder or whole server.

Hello All, I am using desktop redirection to product a controlled set of shortcuts to my students. I have configured a simple desktop layout of how I would like the desktop to look and will need to add shortcuts as required (see screen shot). What I need to do is configure the same desktop layout for all users, i.e. the shortcut icons are all in the same place for each user and if they move them about the screen the next time they log on they are in the same place again. Is this possible via a GPO or other method? The desktop OS will be a mix of Win7 and Win XP. The server is 2008 R2. Many thanks.... John

Hello all and many thanks for your help and replies. I finally fixed the problem by disabling file synchronisation on the home folders. This is what I found was happening…. 1. I created a home folder in AD by using \\server\home$\students\%username% 2. That home folder is empty. There is nothing in the folder so the idea of deleting the desktop.ini file wont work. 3. The user logs on and a profile is created on the PC. 4. As soon as the user logs off the folders are synchronised and it is at that moment the home folder is renamed to “My Documents”; I guess thats when the desktop.ini file is copied across. A real PAIN!! I’m lucky, the 2008 R2 server and test Win7 are all in a virtual format and I had set it up to configure some Group Polices and test for bugs before going live. I won’t be going live just yet. I only have a few hours a week to work on this project and I have spent more time sorting bugs out then getting the GPO’s sorted out. Thanks again. Is there a patch or fix to the bug that renames the users home folder to "My Documents" when you redirect the Documents folder on a Windows 7 based computer to a network share (see screen shot). I have looked at the following fix for Vista When you redirect the Documents folder on a Windows Vista-based computer to a network share, the folder name unexpectedly changes back to Documents I have tried method 2 and it doesn't work for me. Method 3 is a joke as the server may have 400+ home folders and I cant be expected to apply method 3 to all the desktop.ini files!! The home folder is renamed when the user logs off, and once renamed to "My Documents" has not effect on its use. I cant believe this bug even exists on a flagship O.S. like Server 2008 R2. We have had a problem with two laptops showing identical faults when booting. The laptop sometime boots but with a blank screen and a flashing cursor in the top left corner. If a soft reboot is done (CTRL/ALT/DEL) BeCrypt starts without a problem. This can be done over and over again on both machines and each time a soft reboot successfully starts the BeCrypt loader. We have ended up replacing the HDD on one laptop, even though the HDD self test in the bios shows no problems at all. I'm almost sure that both units have not had any hardware problems as the faults were identical. Has anyone come across Becrypt causing boot problems of this nature? Thanks, John
