  1. Hi All, I have just added my 2016 server to my school domain - DC is server 2008R2. The functional lever of the domain is server 2008R2. When I promoted the 2016 server to a DC - there is no SYSVOL or NETLOGON shares on the 2016 server. I had a quick search and found its not uncommon for this to happen. I found this in the event viewer - it was one of the messages seen during the upgrade File Replication Service (FRS) is deprecated. To continue replicating the SYSVOL folder, you should migrate to DFS Replication by using the DFSRMIG command. If you continue to use FRS for SYSVOL replication in this domain, you might not be able to add domain controllers running a future version of Windows Server. DFSRMIG /GetGlobalState DFSR migration has not yet initialized. To start migration please set global state to desired value. Has anyone seen this issue and is there a quick fix for it ? Many thanks, John
  2. Thanks for the reply - I will give that ago - we have 32 of these devices and no media. They were supplied via a third party without any consultation, a bargin as seen by SLT.
  3. We have a number of Lynx 2in1 tablets. I have a strong feeling these have been upgraded to Windows 10 Educational version. Big issue - if any of our students or staff try and login they get the message "Username or password incorrect" - domain administrator seems ok. There seems to be no way around it. Having a look around the internet it says that this can be caused if the OS has been upgraded from Home to Pro or Educational - suggestion is run a fix or a re-install !! I understand there is a fix for this - KB3197954 - this wouldn't work on the version of Windows 10 on the Lynx tablet. This is taken from this support document - click here Has anyone seen this issue and is there an easy fix ??
  4. Hi all, I use Securus in one of the schools I look after and its seems to work ok. I was wondering if there are any other e-safety monitoring solutions out there and your experience of using them. Thanks, John
  5. Thanks All, Done now via an GPO as suggested. Thanks for your quick help and support
  6. Hi all, Does anyone have the msi installed for the new Lightspeed certificate that Talk Straight is rolling out? Previously, after some asking, we was supplied a 32 and 64 bit msi that allowed us to roll out the Lightspeed certificate via a GPO. This time the download link points to a lsproxy.der file. I dont fancy visiting 140+ computers just to replace the certifcate !! Regards, John
  7. Hi All, Thanks for the all the replies. I have done a lot of research since I posted the message and now have a test 2008 R2 server and Windows 10 PC built ready to test the GPO's before roll out. We will be updating to Server 2012 in the new year, but need to get 30 Windows 10 2in1's rolled out ASAP, hence the questions. I'm a bit green when it comes to Win10, so for anyone following this thread I will post some updates on my progress just in case anyone else is on the same road. Many thanks .....
  8. Hi All, Just gathering some information before I begin the road to Windows 10. We have Server 2008 R2 and lots of Windows 7 machines. We use desktop and start menu redirection to manage the students and all in all the GPO's used work fairly well. Question is, does the Desktop / Start Menu redirection work under Windows 10? Also, can I easily add to the GPO management console on 2008 R2 server the extra polices required to fully manage Windows 10 PC's. I'm about to build some virtual machines to test a few things before going live, but any feed back would be helpful. Many thanks, John
  9. We have real issues using the circulate on Junior Librarian.net. Once activated with the administrators account it works fine for the user who is logged on. If a different user then logs onto the same PC, it requires unlocking again. My understanding is once unlocked it downloads a cookie to that users profile. If I am correct then every users who logged on that PC will need circulate unlocking before it will work. With 480 students, potentially logging onto 180 PC's in the school that is an almost impossible task. Junior Library tell me there are 30,000+ schools and none have a problem. Is that right, and if so why are we? Thanks, John
  10. It's not my school, so I don't know; I did the original install. But the GPO's are fine on all the other computers. A very odd problem We have images of both servers so the next step is to restore on of these !!
  11. No, we dont have any proxy setting. I'm still looking for a fix to my GPO issue. Amazing really, had no problems with the Multipoint server since they went in about 4 years ago, and now this !!!
  12. When did the problem happen, has it ever fully worked? - I have a major issue with GPO's on Multipoint 2011 not being applied - see link below... http://www.edugeek.net/forums/thin-client-virtual-machines/161229-multipoint-server-wont-apply-gpos.html
  13. Hi All, Just wondering if anyone has seen this issue with Multipoint 2011? It would appear that our two multipoint servers are not applying group policies. This only came to light when new users logged on and they were not getting the managed desktop. We have no idea how long this has been going on for because other members of staff and students were getting a cached profiles so their desktop were ok. We have two multipoint servers and we have identical problem on each server which is very odd. Both servers are fully up to date as far as Microsoft updates are concerned. If you do a “gpupdate / force” you basically get the report back that the computer and user policies can’t be applied. Running GPReport shows the following error. Group Policy Infrastructure failed due to the error listed below. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. Note: Due to the GP Core failure, none of the other Group Policy components processed their policy. Consequently, status information for the other components is not available. RSOP shows red X on both the users and computer configuration. Both server have been removed from the domain, computer accounts deleted and then added back - same problem. Running “gpupdate / force” on any other computer on the domain works fine. NSlookup resolve both the server and FQDN name to the correct IP address. We don't appear to have any DNS problems and everything apart from the two multipoint servers is working. I know it looks like a AD / DNS issue but all other computers and laptops seem to be fine. It’s just the two multipoint servers and both have worked for the last four years with few issues or problems!!
  14. Hi All - Can anyone help with the following problem or offer an explanation as to why the following is required. Our School have just signed a new 3 year agreement with Talk Straight, and let me first say we have not had any issues with the service or support they have offered in the past. That is why we choose to sign up for another 3 years and take up their offer of free LightSpeed MDM. We filled in a network information sheet and shortly after returning it we received an email telling us we needed to completely change our internal IP addressing scheme for the whole school, if we didn't LightSpeed would not work. Our IP scheme is 192.168.x.x. /22 - the schema we needed to be moved to 192.168.16.0 /22 Our school is a big primary school spread across three building, we have five servers, a big managed wireless network (AP's with fixed IP's), IP telephone system (with IP hand free phones), a CCTV system plus lots of networking printers. We don't have access to the IP phone system or manged wireless so a charge will be incurred to re-configure these. This was explained to Talk Straight, and they suggested keeping them on the same IP address, but anything that needed filtering would need to be on the new IP range. It stands to reason that if we did this we would then need some internal routing between the two network schema? I have to say the internal network has been flawless we have not had any issues at all. Considering the amount of work involved in changing the IP address scheme (and if it works don't fix it!!) we are very reluctant to carry out the work just to be able to manage a hand full of iPads. I checked with a number of other school using LightSpeed and they have not had to make any changes at all?? It's worth mentioning that the Fortinet filtering is being moved to the cloud and we feel that the IP address change is more about that then LightSpeed. Can anyone throw any light on this please, has your school experience the same issues ?? Thanks.....
  15. Ok - I will take a look at Display Note - I have heard of it but not sure of what it can or cannot do.... Thanks...
  16. Hi All - we have a number of different devices in our school and need to mirror the smartboard or touch screen content onto them We have Windows PC's as well as iPad's and Android tablets. We will be looking at Chromebooks shortly. mirroring360 looks like the only option - or is there better solutions out there - any comments please. Mirroring360 – Share your devices' screen Thanks John
  17. Just over £345 with 21.5 inch screen and 5 year on-site cover. I think the price is good. Just waiting to see quotes from Misco, BT Direct who, I think, are quoting Dell.
  18. Its a Genie with VIG690M Motherboard, Intel Core i5 Processor i5-4460, 3.20GHz, Quad Core. with 6MB Cache, 4Gb RAM, 500GB HDD Small form factor desktop case. I'm just trying to get a decent 21.5 inch monitor included with HDMI connection as well.
  19. Hi - thanks for the reply - Just got a quote for i5 computers - they are about £40 cheaper then Stone. I have not dealt with them before and was just wondering if the kit and support is ok before taking the jump !!
  20. Hi - Has anyone had any dealing with XMA. Home Just got a quote for PC's and they are cheaper then Stone. They appear use Viglen as a source of PC hardware. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience - good or bad. Are they a company you would recommend?
  21. Might have found it myself !! - does anyone know if it works ok ?? Open Sankoré | The Free Interactive Whiteboard Software
  22. Hi All - is there any free software that will allow me to draw or write directly onto any touch screen with my finger or stylus?? I'm running Windows 7 Pro on a laptop. If its not free how much. Many thanks..... John
  23. Hi Dave and thanks for the reply. I know its the HTTPS deep scanning that is the issue. But I look after three other schools who use Fortinet filtering and they do not have the same issue. Connecting any wireless device to the the school network will give them internet access without the need to reserve an IP address or install a certificate. Likewise, when I install or rebuild a PC with Windows 7, most of the drivers are installed for me over the internet because an internet connection is available. But how does HTTPS deep scanning fit into BYOD - the idea of that is to quickly connect almost any wireless device and get instant internet access, it would appear this is no longer possible. How does "SchoolsBroadband" work in a school who want to run BYOD and are reluctant to install certificates on devices that do not belong to the school or when there is no IT manager around to do the job?? BYOD in schools is going to be massive, there must be a simple solution to connecting wireless devices to the school network, offering them filtering without the need to play around with reserved IP addresses and certificates??? Thanks, John
  24. We have just changed ISP providers - both used Fortinet filter boxes, the latest one is the 60D. I cant help but feel this change has introduced major issues in getting our devices to work on the school network. All the PC’s need a new certificate before they would display internet pages, a GPO fixed this but it was a very hit and miss affair on some devices, taking three or four reboots the get it installed !! . iPads needed to be given reserved IP address from an IP address range; this had been setup for “student” filtering. This had to be done even before they would get the certificate error from the Fortinet box, you could then choose to ignore this then you finally got a webpage. I then had to configure an FTP server to install the certificate onto these devices - quick to do, but all the work has been very time consuming. Android devices are a different story. These too had to be given a reserved IP address, but I couldn't FTP to these devises like I could from Safari on the iPads - so I had to email the certificate and install it from an attachment. All this brings me round to BYOD. We were hoping to introduce a very simple BYOD hotspot in the school where we could issue a tick that would allow internet access for a few hours, half a day, all day etc. Very important for guest or trainers and future plans for the school to open Saturdays when there won't be any IT staff around. But that would seem to be a very difficult job to do judging by the issue above. Question is - where has it gone wrong? Surely, if we want to set up BYOD access in the school we shouldn't have to reserve an IP address of that device then install a certificate. I can tell you now, IT staff draw the line at installing anything that is not owned by the school, particularly on personal devices. Has anyone got a similar problems with the Fortinet filter solution or a fix for the above nightmare ??
