What full specification is the Server?

On Act 3 now and really enjoying it. Very Cinematic. It's proving a bit easy so far though in co-op. Pity we couldnt jump straight into Insane mode. Butuz

It's misleading. You only get discounts for your school if your a registered ATSS Technician on the Affiliated Technician Support Scheme. See here. RM.com Shop: Affiliated Technician Support Scheme If you are "just" an RM Certified Technician or Network Manager your school recieves no discount whatsoever on your support contract. Makes you feeel good huh? I've brought it up several times with RM as I think it is very unfair - but they don't seem to care.

Make sure you use Raid5 with hot spare rather than raid 1 - this will increase your database read speed considerably, and reads is probably at least 3/4 of all IO operations on the sims database, whilst still keeping lots of nice redundancy.

Sounds as if the problem could be with the server rather than the thin clients. Can you run a Remote Desktop off a Windows Workstation and connect to your 2008 server?

I gave up mass crimping several years ago. Patch cables are so cheaop now that it simply was not worth my time sitting there for an hour just crimping and cutting and trimming. I still do the odd crimp if I need a really long patch cable or something out of the ordinary. But 0.5 - 10m gets bought.

Ironically the main reason I bought HP switches through the school was the lifetime warranty yet I've never actually had to ring them........ Ger rid of the 3com tat as soon as you can, had nothing but bother with them.

And they're rubbish. Your better off withn a cheap 4 port switch to be honest.

If it is hardware RAID you will have to press F6 right at the very Start of the Win2k3 Server Install procedure. - the prompt doesnt stay up for long so be quick! You need to put the drivers for your exact RAID card on a floppy disk too as the F6 prompt takes drivers from floppy disks. I would stick with RAID5 for the Terminal Server as alot of what a terminal server does is reads, with less writes. And reads are much faster on Raid 5 than on Raid 1.

Caerphilly are also pushing towards Moodle but it's very slow going. The problem is all decisions seem to be being made in Headteacher meetings with little or no input from us Network Managers. This in my view is a recipie for disaster if we are not there to highlight the infrastructure and usability issues - but we'll see. Apparently they are going to be trialling it in a few schools but having spoken to one of the schools not a great deal is happening. Personally I can not wait for Moodle - we have held of implementing anything ourselves as to be honest we need to cater for the 14-19 Collegium we have at CCBC where pupils go to different schools to do different lessons, and so basically all pupils will need to access centralised lesson resources from any school. As such it really has to be LEA driven or there is little point in doing it. Wales as a whole lacks Vision for ICT and the welsh assembly should be ashamed as they're getting paid our £millions of tax payers money to be visionless and leaderless. Most LEA's also seem to lack vision which is unfortunate though not unexpected given lack of leadership from WAG. Cardiff do seem to be one of the leaders though as they have had lots of initiatives such as moodle for quite a while. It's a sad state of affairs and frankly in my oppinion it is very unfortunate my school happens to be in Wales.

Strange!! In that case I'd suggest it's possible you may be behind in updates/hotfixes??

In RMMC the "Internet and Email Settings" branch gets overwritten by the "User Types" branch - so you need to go into the "User Types" branch and open the new User Type, change the Category to "Proxy Server" and put a tick in the box and enter the new proxy details. From now on this nmew usertype should override the old settings that are in internet and Email settings just for that user.

If you've lost two disks then I doubt you'll get much back of use. Very unfortunate Butuz

Oh well here goes! I've downloaded VMWare ESXI from the website. Installed it onto a bog standard Workstation - P4 3.4/3GB Ram/ 80Gb HDD Set it on the network with a manual IP etc. Virtualised a test Windows 2003 Web server I had set up to use with Sharepoint. Hey presto - my web server is now a virtual server, connected to the network and accessible from all workstations!!! I created a snapshot of it and now i can fiddle to my hearts content and if it all goes screwy - revert bnack to the snapshot! It was easy to set up! Vmware Convertor is a magic program - how awesome are the programmers behind all this VMWare software?!!

I am looking seriously into virualisation too Gareth, in particular to start off with virtualising several web / app servers that are old and low spec servers but with a view to eventually virtualising the whole system. Also I have three terminal servers unfortunatly running off Win2k3 Stanard edition (thus limited to 4GB of ram). I am looking to virtualise all three of these servers into one physical quad core 16GB ram server in order to free up two aditional quad core servers. It may not work - but if it does I have just got myself two free servers effectively! I suppose the main benefits for me are: 1) Make the most out of existing hardware while reducing support/warranty costs - e.g take 3 old crappy web servers and virtualise them onto an existing hish spec server. 2) Platform independent (take a virtual machine and run it on any server, or even a workstation!) 3) Easy disaster recovery - take snapshots before installing server patches/software, backup whole VM's onto tape/disk/offsite. If your physical server goes down simply install vmware esx on another server or god forbid even a powerful workstation - and hey presto all your virtual servers are back up and running. 4) All the above help to ease managment and critically, reduce downtime. It's all very exiting!

I hope it actually is a good improvment because the old Xbox interface was just so damn perfect right out of the box that there must be a high risk of actually runing it / making it worse. Jets hope the new dashboard doesnt turn into a "vista" huh! Also I hope it has built in web broser as the xbox really needs it Butuz

Yup thats the one the big globe swooshing and wooshing around. It's _really_ bloody annoying now as it seems to come up on 50% of threads. On IE6 here for my sins.

Whever this silly GCHQ Advert appears on a thread it completeley screws up web browsing - mouse stutters, scroll bars stutter - the PC is reduced to a complete mess. 2.33 Core 2 Duo / 2GB Ram / Raptor HDD / WinXp Pro. Rest of the site is fine but as soon as this advert appears say bye bye to usability!!! Please get rid of this advert until it is fixed!
