That looks like it's for use with a specific type of system and is only using a single twisted pair per plug - RJ45 connectors are used in a very wide variety of different systems, not just ethernet. Your only realistic option is to extend the cables as far as I can see. Mike.

Look at Stone, they've always given me good prices in the past. You should be able to get a version of their NT305 laptop for the same sort of money as the novatech n3. It's a well made machine, we have 25 of them and they've been very reliable. We also used to buy exclusively Dell machines, but moved away to other suppliers about 2 years ago when Dells costs seem to increase quite a bit. We found we could get the same warranty deal and an identical spec machine from other suppliers and save about £100 a unit, and this trend continues today with the latest quotes I've had.

It does. If you run the .EXE with /S at the end you'll get the settings screen which you can use to program it to work in whatever way you like, by OU is one of the options. The only slight flaw with my program is it reads the settings file from the user profile rather than the same directory as the program is run from.

Yes seasick steve and John Paul Jones were pretty good guests. Foo Fighters always have guests at their gigs, and rarely repeat the same ones. They had quite a few perform on stage with them throughout the gig. The best moment of the sunday night was the qaulity moment with the crowd who just went nuts with the 'woooooooo hoooooo oooooo' bit from best of you for a good 2 minutes or so. Then the same thing got repeated later on in a gap between songs which was quality. There's actually a good video of the first time on youtube

Ah yes, that was a good show, I seem to recall they had some pretty clever laser lighting. I've seen muse a few times as well and agree they also put on a good show, wembly stadium was partiularly good.

Works even better if you put a visible light filter in place of the IR filter, you then get an IR only webcam. You can make a visible light filter from the magnetic surface of a floppy disc believe it or not, as that lets IR light through but blocks visible light. Another common visible light filter is a fully exposed piece of colour film (that's been developed) which to our eyes will look opaque, but that also lets IR light through. I made an IR webcam by doing this and amazed people with the seeing through coke trick. It will also make an LCD monitor with an image on appear completely black from certain angles, will see through some clothes or dramatically change the colour of them (black t-shirts look much paler for instance) and a few other interesting things.

I think we need to move with the times and start allowing these technologies to be embraced. Only a few years ago most schools banned mobile phones, but we don't bother with that here now as it's a losing battle. Students bring them in at their own risk, and as long as they're not using them in lessons then that's fine. Same with i-pods etc. For linking them up to computers, most phones and PCs support bluetooth now, why not use it? For our new building we are actually planning it with student owned devices in mind, making sure they have somewhere secure to store them and charge them, and designing the systems as much as possible to support their use within the building and we will be actively encouraging their use in the school. While this may create some problems, it will also allow more use of technology in and around the school, students could in theory hook their phones up to our network to recieve their e-mail, or even use their PSP or other device on the system. We know there will be problems, but we also know there massive potential for a different approach which we are going to try our hardest to make a success. Mike.

I've always presumed the only data we have to keep for archival purposes is data stored about the students, like the data in SIMS and any associated documents and their school record etc. and not the students actual home area directories and e-mails etc. However some schools read this requirement as if we should be retaining backups of students actual work for x number of years. Yes, version 8.0.2 is the latest admin kit. The full version number of the absolute latest version is Version: 8.0.2163 I suggest keeping an eye on it initially and if the same behaviour repeats itself, it would be well worth giving their support a call, I've found them to be very helpful in the past. I've no suggestion to make myself except checking you have the very latest version of the admin kit. Mike.

Kaspersky is quite a hungry program when it comes to SQL, but it shouldn't cause that sort of problem. Our kaspersky database is about 1GB with the associated log file being about 470MB and that's on a 2 year old installation. What version of Kaspersky admin kit are you running and what version of SQL?

Webserver installed with http://gallery.menalto.com/ setup with LDAP authentication is the closest I've found. I've not set it up myself, but there's potential there to do what you want. It wouldn't be that hard to teach staff to use it as it's fairly straightforward and you can set limits on picture sizes in the admin console and it will automatically resize them. Mike

I knocked our toner bill down from around £15k a year to around £5k a year in the first year of having papercut. Students have a personal quota, staff print to a department shared account except admin staff who have unlimited printing for obvious reasons. No more than 3 copies, no duplicate documents within 2 minutes, student printing requires staff authorisation using a release queue. Same policy runs school wide, except in the art department who fund their own printer and chose for it not to be restricted. Colour print costs 2 credits per page, except our nice solid ink xerox printer which is 3 credits as it costs slightly more to run. B/W print is 1 credit per page with a 25% discount for using duplex mode. Students get initial allocation of 100 credits a term, plus 20 credits per week upto a maximum of 200 credits. Departments get 500 credits per term per member of FT teaching staff. Simples! Mike.
