We don't at the moment, but our new buildings ICT 'vision' greatly involves encouraging students to bring in their own devices and a much more 'open' system than a lot of schools have at the moment, allowing these to be used to access resources hosted on the academy network or cloud. We're looking to be as platform independant as possible as well so in theory anything could be used, windows, apple OS, linux, android etc.

Any device, any where, any time access More devices owned by the students, less devices owned by the school More investment in the back end and network infrastructure moving away from the traditional 'client server' model to a more flexible environment encompassing VDI technologies and cloud environments. At least that's what we're striving for here.

Not 100% sure on why you're getting the error, but if deleting the profile solves it then all you probably need to do is make sure the options for deleting users profiles at logoff are enabled in your group policy, and also if you're running windows XP make sure the user hive profile cleanup service is installed. This means the machine will download a fresh copy of the profile every time a they logon instead of caching it on the local machine. This also stops your machines filling up wth profile folders. What colour is the cable? You can get external grade cable which is fine to be run outside un-protected. Although not ideal as it's still liable to damage it won't suffer as a result. This is normally black in colour and feels a bit tougher than normal cable.

We've had a webcam monitoring our new building progress for a while now which has been taking a snapshot every 10 minutes, including at night. I want to sequence these images into a time lapse movie, but first of all I want to remove all the night time frames taken between about 6:00pm and 7:00am which are useless to me. Short of deleting each batch manually which I'd rather not do, is there a quick and dirty script that anyone knows of which will do it for me? Mike.

Without actually looking as the AD structure or knowing the FQ domain names it would be almost impossible to tell, as you can simply create trusts between un-related domains which has the same effect of having all the domains listed on the logon box.

There's a lot of precious and semi-precious metals in CPU's so to the right person there could well be some money in those, however I doubt it's as much as the guy is asking for.

BT don't have a choise, there's a court order in place which requires them to do it which came out of an injunction brought about by the Motion Picture Association. It's a demonstration of the failure of the music and film industry to move with the times, this is a battle they will simply never win. The copyright laws throughout the whole world are essentually un-enforceable as they stand, the ease at which you can download material is rediculous, even my friends 9yr old can search for torrents and knows how to download them. Some drastic changes are needed and I personally think the whole idea of selling recorded material for a profit is an outdated concept that doesn't fit in with the modern way society consumes these products and that model needs to be revised and the laws surrounding it also need to be revised. As for the censorship of the site, we all know that within weeks something new will pop up to replace it owned and run by a different company which will require a new injunction to stop and the whole process starts all over again, complete waste of time. They need to embrace the technology and the will of the masses and find a way of working with them instead of battling against it all the time.

Anyone else tried the experimental new look for youtube yet? You can try it out by visiting YouTube - Broadcast Yourself I quite like it, seems more intuative to me and less rubbish cluttering up the pages and lots of other subtle changes like back and forwards buttons on playlists. They also have proper cataloguing for Music, Films and TV shows which is a big improvement. Mike

Usb Video Capture is the one I've used before with good results, and yes it does do Audio in stereo as well don't ya know.

Bung it on one of your existing servers, as unless it's going to be very heavily used it won't make a great deal of difference to the server, and it'll be a waste of resources having another server running just for that in my opinion. Mike.

Anyone remember Escom? I had a Pentium P75 with a whopping 1GB hard drive and 8MB of RAM from them in about 1995. Windows 95 had not long been out and I was the first person in my class at School to have a PC running it, we were amazed watching all the little Video clips contained on the CD. Cost at the time, About £1300 with a 1MB ATI graphics card and a 14" Monitor. Wasn't long after that they went bust!

I wuld just use the video output on a normal camcorder and a USB video capture device together with VLC players multicast ability. You'll get a better quality video than using an IP camera, and much better quality sound. Just make sure you turn off any 'sleep' mode on the camera and any on screen display and it'll do the job nicely - I've done this many times in the past. Mike.

I rekon it's a legacy item from an old system, probably an old print server for a printer which is no longer there. I had a mystery computer in this school when I started, a very old Tiny PC under a table in a store room connected up to the network. After careful examination I concluded it had been used for some previously removed digital signage. The monitors had been taken down, but the PC that ran them was still chugging away forgotten about in this cupboard.

There's every chance quite a few of you reading this will deal with the same company, and have had the data requested from you in the same format. Mike.

I'm in charge, it's my call. This data has been requested in this format by an external company we use for a service. It will contain names, addresses, DOB and other data on new year 7 students, and I'm not really 100% happy with this security, but I've been informed by them that 'no one else has raised this as an issue' so I thought I'd see what the general opinion was on here. Mike.

Would people consider a passworded ZIP file, with the password being given verbally to the recepient over the phone, adequate security for sending data offsite by e-mail?

Thanks for your reply Andrew. I've actually already informed Adam Jones of the missing machines serial numbers, so hopefully they are logged somewhere in your system. Chances of anyone being silly enough to ring support with a stolen laptop is slim, but you never know - stranger things have happend. So far no sign of them being recovered, so we guess they're gone for good. Mike.

Kaspersky give you 150 free home licenses for your school staff/students to use at home when you buy their enterprise product. If these are what they OP is selling, they should not be re-sold as they are only for use of the schools staff/students and are tied to your organisation as I understand.

Well in our new building we are planning to have lockers with charging points in, so the students can leave them in there on-charge when they're not in use. We are also ensuring there are at least a few tables in each room which are in reach of a plug socket, as invariably there will be one or two students who will forget to charge their devices and I'd recommend provisioning spare powerpacks as well. Spare batteries are a nice idea if you have all the same type of device, you could have a central pool of batteries in a large charging bay, then students could swap them out with you as necessary. Giving each student a spare battery would only have limited effectiveness as they would still invariably forget to charge it or forget to bring it with them to school. Mike.
