Hi all, Wonder if anyone has seen this after a clean install of Windows 7 32bit with SP1 (clean install WITH SP1 from the VL Centre) where after a sysprep the audio device just stop working (see attached). I've only tried this install once so I guess something plain odd could have happened but if anyone else has seen this and has a solution I'd love to know what it is! Have already tried uninstalling/reinstalling device, then disenabled digital sig enforcement and uninstalling AV all of which didn't help a bit. I'm going to remake the image in a short while (however I would prefer not to with the sheer volume of software on it) so will see how that turns out. Thanks, James

Creating avatars (avatar) for year 6 pupils
jamesfed replied to chris_007's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Are you an IT Tech or a Teacher? If your a teacher then I'd get ahold of your IT guys to see if you can get a website unblocked. If your a Tech and your web filtering is done by your LEA then I'd get ahold of them to get the site unblocked. -
Already had it running on the 9800GT with the Beta RemoteFX works with quite a few cards with varying results but naturaly in a production enviroment itd be nVidia Tesla or FirePro. As far as that HP doc goes we've been looking at the Workstation blade servers as our first choice.
-
I'd love to hear from you if you've played around with RemoteFX - were looking at it here and have got some HP and 10zig thin clients on the way to play with (are going to be running them off my home desktop PC with its 9800GT). You might also want to have a look at the D385 - higher core count with the new AMD 8 and 12 core opterons (potentialy 24 cores total) but only one graphics card slot as I understand.

Been given £8000 to spend before April, any ideas?
jamesfed replied to farquea's topic in General Chat
Full on server upgrade - G7 HP blades all the way with a nice San attached (maybe even blade storage). You can get cashback on trade ins at the moment as well. -
Besides what has already been said about a Hyper-V host should only be for Hyper-V and nothing else I don't see any issues. As part of this the whole idea of running VMs is that the host should be uberly stable state with nothing else running on it besides Hyper-V but then again if you don't have anything better to run your VMs on then why not!

slow network performance between physical and virtual.
jamesfed replied to itgeek's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
What hypervisor are you running your VMs on along with what is the Client OS, have you got whatever intergration services installed and is this a new problem? -
Were pretty strict about ID cards here - every staff member has one which must be displayed at all times. We have them to help keep the LA happy but also because we have a high number of 6th form students wondering around and it can be very easy to mistake them for staff members.

Usaly a shirt (untucked), a pair of outdoorsy trousers (Craghoppers Kiwi) and my outdoorsy shoes. From some angles (and because Im only 20) I look like one of our 6th formers if it wasnt for the ID badge!

Ahh good thought - Im not too sure that a sitemap has ever been submitted. Will get one done and see how google likes it.

Hi all, I've just been made aware that when people google our school 'Fitzharrys School' that although the first link on google is to our site (fitzharrys.oxon.sch.uk) that the title word instead of being Fitzharrys School is instead the word 'week'. Looking at our site the only time the word week appears on our homepage (and any other page) is on some sub menus but then looking deeper in the source code the word week appears frequently in the calendar that we have in our sidebar. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can do to get our google title right? Thanks, James

Could you show a few screen shots of your setup in NPS?

If you need any help I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who can help - just post your needs and current enviroment

Everything in house - didn't even get a consultant in. All you need to figure out is how much RAM you need to run the VMs and what kind of disk/processor usage you will need. As far as converting physical to virtual as we used Hyper-V it wasn't that difficult to get System Centre Virtual Machine Manager installed and converting the physical servers (you can do it through the trial if you need).
-
That sounds pretty good infact - if anyone has any ideas on performance then this would probably make our ideal setup. Thanks!

Hi all, Just further to my previous thing on Hyper-V - we've got the Smoothwall trial installed inside virtual box - everything seems to be running fine but naturaly I don't want to point everyone at a VM running on my desktop to see how well it would run in our enviroment. As such does anyone know if it'll run inside VirtualBox ok in production? Again I guess its not supported (like XenServer if I understand corrently) but if it runs ok then we might end up with a Server 2008 R2 machine with Hyper-V on - a TMG server running inside a Hyper-V VM and then virtualbox running (Virtualbox is accualy how we started out with VMs here) the Smoothwall server. I know that it can be quite an intensive thing running services like this at the same time but it won't be a problem for the server that we are looking at running it all on. Thanks! James

We run something called Kaviza - think of Citrix XenDesktop in a box - includes all the provisioining services, connection clients and so on all in one thing without having to worry about running anything on Server 2003 and it breaking. You can use it with Citrix HDX or RDP both of which work great (although HDX is a bit more) and the 10zig clients even have the connection client built in. As far as desktop hosting goes the whole system runs off XenServer however we are going to move to Hyper-V when they release the next version.

Hi all, We are looking at a more long term storage plan with the main focus being on capacity (and the ability to expand) and redundancy. So far the DroboElite has caught my eye for these main points and most of all its low up front cost. The main purpose for the Drobo would be storage of users work and shares – nothing intensive like hosting virtual disks. We already have a number of 500Gb hard drives out of use since we migrated over to a virtual server environment so if I could save on buying new drives (as I would have to should I buy something branded like a HP array) that would be another benefit (especially considering there is nothing wrong with the spare drives I have). So to that effect does anyone on here have any good/bad/ugly stories to tell of the DroboElite – a quick search reveals a few answers but nothing in detail. Thanks, James

Staff access to student work folders
jamesfed replied to GoldenWonder's topic in How do you do....it?
We have RO access for staff - it needs to be requested by the staff member and then access is approved by the IT Manager. As far as setup goes we have a GPO applied at the top of our staff OU - security group filtering makes it only apply to staff members who we put in our 'Read pupils folder' security group. This GPO then makes a networked drive appear in my computer from which they can browse the work. Main reason for setup was for staff to get ahold of work from students who were absent. -
We have been using the AMD Opteron 6100 series processors in our virtual servers - 8 core HE for server OSes and 12 core for virtual desktops. Core count is always one of the key things when virtulising and AMD have the king pin on it at the moment. The two servers you should look out for are the HP DL165 G7 and the DL 385 G7. Also....don't underesitmate your needs for fast hard drives - if you have the ablity to keep user data on some kind of NAS/SAN then invest in low capacity high speed drives (e.g. 72Gb 15,000rpm).
-
With multimedia although the application is running on your virtual server if you use HDX/Windows RDP 7.x all it does is sends the data for the video onto the client for it to render (called client side rendering). The other option is host side rendering but this has the draw back of if your network isn't fast enough then you could come across bandwith problems however the main problem is simply running out of processing power on your virtual server. However.........stay tuned on Server 2k8 R2 SP1 - it will allow you to use a graphics card in your server to do all the hard work however details so far haven't been very clear on how well this scales. So...your best bet would be to get some new thin clients as part of the solution to.
-
That might be our option then - I've sent a thing through on your site to get a trial version and I'll give it a go on Xen. Thanks! James
-
Cheers for that - how does it run on XenServer? I'd hope with 4x15k SAS 6Gb drives and a 8 core processor resources shouldn't be an issue - the only other thing that it would be running side by side with would be our internal web server (a few local sites nothing like Sharepoint) and a smattering of TMG to handle direct access and VPN.
-
A Microsoft Surface (expecily the new gen) would be pretty cool. Otherwise I would be looking at thin clients for any of the PCs in there - tiny PCs and if you kit out the server right they will fly and people will go ooooo. That and super bright LED screens everywhere.
