Been looking though the event logs to try and diagnose some slowness issues around the network and I am seeing the following Event Viewer warning for Hyper-V-VMMS Detected disconnected media state for network adapter '{3447DECC-E1C4-480A-9676-F57364662747}' that is attached to virtual switch '8C7F3949-1719-433E-A81C-6819AF9F53B9'. Any idea how to identify which VM is giving this error. Many thanks Mark

First day back, what has, or is, going to break?
mdrabble replied to Dos_Box's topic in General Chat
Probably my patience and sanity more than anything technical due to idiotic questions and requests. -
We went through this recently and I had the Head and both DSLs involved from in the process from the outset. I had2 sets of demos from each product - first was a technical demo for just myself, so I could see what each product had to offer and then the other demo was the filtering, reporting for Head and DSLs. We looked at Smoothwall (Cloud Reporting including Monitor for Safeguarding), Fortinet (Fastvue and Replog for Reporting) and Sonicwall (Fastvue for Reporting) I gave them my honest and unbiased opinions - Smoothwall definitely the better filtering product and Fortinet the better Firewall Product and for reporting I kept quiet on this as I wanted to let them decide on their own. I made sure the DSLs and Head made the overall decision as it was based on Filtering and Reporting. They ended up going with Fortinet with FastVue and RepLog (for Safeguarding) from SwitchShop - as this gave the reporting features they were happy with- I know Smoothwall have worked on this and have introduced their Cloud Report, but Head and DSLs didnt feel it was quite up the other reporting options. I'll be honest, the decision was a total surprise as we were a Smoothwall customer for years. I would have been happy for Fortinet and Smoothwall combo, but cost was also factored into this as with most things.

Morning all A question for those people who use Fortinet products and have done Fortinet training..... Where and how have you done it? We have had a FortiGate, Analyser and Authenticator in for a couple of months now and I feel now is the time to get some proper training on it all. Any recommendations for training providers? Cheers

Infrastructure update - what to replace and what to keep?
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
Thanks for all the replies, really insightful and massive help. Major spanner in the works is I’ve found out we are having a full electrical rewire in half the building (lights and sockets - whole 9 yard) which is going to be done in phases starting in the summer - thankfully I’ve managed to persuade management I need to be at the meeting with the selected contractor so I know what is happening and when as will seriously impact what I need to get done. -

Never even thought about single mode, as I just had Dfe standards and OM4 in my head. -
Infrastructure update - what to replace and what to keep?
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
Was purely for future proofing. Cabling is going to be done all in house, so was just thinking since we running some cables, would it be worth doing - but realistically it is just "could do" rather than "must do" -

I've after using my fellow edugeekers as a sounding board to bounce some ideas around, so please forgive the incoherent babble, but hopefully it make some kind of sense...... A bit of background on current setup. Network is a mixture of CAT5e and CAT6 cabling from edge cabs to desktops and other edge devices. Edge Cabs to Core are a mixture of OM1 and OM3 (with OM3 running at 10gb) Edge Switches are mainly Unifi EdgeMax both POE and non POE (black ones - none cloud managed), also have 4 x FS switches. Wifi APs are Unifi NanoHD (Wifi5) installed 6 years ago, when it was just staff connecting using mobile devices. I had a Wifi survey done and it has confirmed what I thought about problematic areas, but also helped in confirming number of APs and locations to achieve full site coverage. So far the plan is: Finally replace the OM1 to OM4 and run at 10gb (approx 8 runs) Expand our Wifi to give full site coverage, as we now have 3 laptop trollies and some other additional laptops - which comes to approx 100+ laptops - which is why we had a Wifi survey as I knew we had some problem areas. I'm not sure if to purchase additional 41 x Wifi6 Unifi APs and then replace the existing 43 x NanoHD (Wifi5) versions over time or bite the bullet and drop them and go with another provider for 84 x new APs - but without the stupid costs involved. New APs will need new cables running and at the same time I am thinking of running cables to the interactive screen, so we can use the Management software on them. Some teacher connections are CAT5e - would you keep the CAT5e or replace with new CAT6? Part of me is thinking, if new APs have 2.5gb ports, do I look at replacing some Edge Switches, with 2.5gb ports, so new Wifi APs can take full advantage of the speeds? This will then hopefully tie in nicely for if/when we roll out staff laptops in Sept 2025. (Using Dock when in teaching rooms, but then Wifi when they are in areas which out docks) What are people thoughts on the above? Cheers

Are you using local profiles? Use delprof or a similar tool to remove any profiles Have noticed this a lot recently on Win10 - think could be edge related but not had time to investigate. Clearing the profiles seems to sort the issue.

Interestingly, I changed from ldaps to ldap and back to ldaps and seems to be working again. I’ve sent a message to TES support asking if any reported issues but not heard anything back as yet.
-
Is anyone else having issues with staff logging in? Come to double check everything and the page for configuring LDAPS connections is giving me an error about not being able to contact ldaps server. Cheers

We currently use Cloud Connect which is up for renewal soon so I thought I would see what else is out there. I am currently looking at Iam cloud mapper, which appears to work direct to Office 365 and no sync involves (correct me if I am wrong) What other offerings are out there and which do you guys use? Cheers

FortiGate filtering policies
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Very different compared to smoothwall. Slowly getting there - although we have just started with a strange issue with edge and office 365/One Drive running slow and freezing - not sure it down to some changes I’ve made or something else. I’ve raised a helpdesk ticket asking them to take a look at the settings etc. -
Just finished having FortiGate installed and setup filtering policies (which I need to get the DSLs to review) but I wondered if anyone who uses FortiGate mind sharing how they have their web/app filtering policies. Cheers

Just had FortiGate installed and trying to get my head around the difference in management from Smoothwall. Previously I had the UniFi Guest Working fine through Smoothwall but both the engineer who installed Our FortiGate and myself are scratching our head on how to get the portal working with FortiGate. In the end I told the engineer to leave it as time was running out and I would have a look when I get chance. So…… anyone have the Guest Portal working with FortiGate? Cheers

Haven’t got one to hand and wanted to test before ordering one

Stupid question time - SFP+ LR modules - can I use normal MM fibre patch cable or do I need a single mode cable? Cheers

I have staff in AD/365 groups which I then assign to as members of the site. All students are in simialr AD/365 group and are set as Visitors, so they have read access only.

Originally used a system that @FragglePete kindly shared /forums/how-do-you-do/175168-student-staff-home-pages.html Only moved away from that system as SLT wanted a system that was externally accessible by staff and students.

Not sure - I basically was asked come up with something quick and simple to use and have left them to it...... since it went live, not had any feedback (which is about right!)

Screenshot below - put also slight more info here with PDF docs on setting up and a simple user guide- /forums/cloud-services/231277-sharepoint-can-i-use-noticeboard.html#post2016997

Have a look at this - SharePoint - Can I use it as a noticeboard? /showthread.php?t=231277 Been working well and staff have taken it on and post daily notices for students - saves staff getting emails to read during form etc. Use of audience targeting also helps to restrict whose what etc Hope it helps :-)

Afternoon all I've been tasked with pricing up and purchasing some Paxlocks, including airbridges and euro locks to integrate into our existing Net2 system. Can anyone recommend any suppliers that sell to schools? So far, only found trade suppliers. Cheers

Cloud migration from on-prem storage to SharePoint & OneDrive
mdrabble replied to kennysarmy's topic in Cloud Services
We have been moving things over slowly - this is because staff don't like change! We first moved Student Shared Area, gave that 12 months to embed (2022) We had a drive with departmental folder - this moved to separate SharePoint areas for each department (May 2023) All new users are now fully cloud - so current Year 7 and 12 and any new staff. Plan is to move all students to cloud in the summer and then staff in October We purchased Cloud Connect, and have mapped drives and works well - especially for those who are less tech savy and like using the drive method.
