SIMS.net does Identify gender, but it also has a pronoun section - so I am assuming, Salamander can pull information from either section. I've asked questions such as what is the intended use of these groups but I've heard nothing back. I'll hopefully update this thread once I know more

I've been asked if I can create email groups based on gender, so certain emails can be sent to Year 12/13 boys or Year 12/13 girls. I've voiced my concerns and said it should be referred to the DSL and SLT to make the decision but should the groups go ahead, email groups can be created based of gender within SIMS.net but I am a bit concerned about student who may identify as another gender such as Trans etc which may not be recorded on SIMS.net and there be some kind of complaint for email a student part of an email group such as Year 12 Females, and if you identifies as Male or Trans, etc Not sure they email groups can be created from the Pronouns - and if they can, what email name/group would we use for students who identify as They/Them Has any other school done email groups based on gender and if so how have you navigated this minefield? Cheers

BETT 2023 GIVEAWAY - What is your earliest gaming memory?
mdrabble replied to VeryPC's topic in Our Advertisers
Can't remember my age, playing Pong on what I think was an Activision console is my earliest memory Then ZX Spectrum and Jetset Willy, Manic Miner - and the frustration of have to start to reload again as it failed to load as it go to the end of the tape - or even worse, when the tape got chewed in the player! Oh for the joy of a pencil to help wind the tape back in -
SharePoint - automatically set as followed for users
mdrabble posted a topic in How do you do....it?
Is there any way I can set a SharePoint site as followed for New Users? Thinking, for when they first sign in to Office 365, I it would be nice for it to be set as followed and appear at the top automatically, instead of them being confused and not being able to find it and then me having to explain they have to search and then set to followed... Cheers -
For years we have no issues using a single generic network account for cover/agency staff which as an Office 365 account and access to the Student Resources only. If the supply are just there for the day, they do paper registers, and if they are more long term (2 weeks +), they are given a sims account to take registers. Work fine for years and now with a new HR person - this is an issue. Don't really want to go down the route of manually creating accounts as we never get told if they leave etc How do other school handle this kind of thing? Cheers

Student Appdata folder - redirect or not?
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
Thanks for replies Just checked and turned out I removed app data redirect for staff when I set them to local profiles. Was a bit confused when I went to check and the settings wasn’t applied, so I checked my notes and I changed it over 18 months ago. Students that that use unity are taught in two different rooms over the two week timetable. Will change those students to local profiles and see how it goes. -
Currently have students using mandatory profiles, with only documents, etc being redirected. Updated to the latest version of Unity and they now store details in the AppData folder, which get created and deleted at logon/logoff which is causing a fair few issues. I already have the staff Appdata folder redirected, so I am wondering if there is anything to stop me from doing the same for a small set of students who need to use unity. What are peoples thoughts of Student Appdata folders being redirected? Cheers

Sorry to jump on board - been asked to check how a school goes about checking if they are eligible. I've said I don't think we are as I think school are contacted by the Dfe directly - but if anyone has any links I can forward on to our Business/Finance person it would be very much appreciated. Cheers -
We have a simple intranet page which uses a mysql db to display messages to users which staff can add - and either side are tiles with links to websites (kindly donated by a fellow edugeeker) I have been asked to update it "make it more modern looking" and at the same time produce a "staff" only version - which I could do but ideally I could do with moving it to SharePoint. I did post a question about adding news section to a SharePoint site, but after trying and failing due the constant interuptions and side tracked onto other things - I decided to look for a company who can set up the following General SharePoint "landing page" for all users with "Student News/Notices" which staff can add - this can then be filtered by year groups, etc. New Staff SharePoint area with "Staff only News/Notices" which staff can add. Set and check permissions for users. Added bonus would be a design template I can then add to all departmental SharePoint Sites I'm fed up of not having the time to do a proper job and managing a half decent job So... any recommendations? Cheers

Another quick question....... how do you go on with automatically deleting old pages?

Have an interesting request for an email addresss/account. We have some sixth formers, head of science and external Dr (Dr of what I have no idea) But I’ve been asked to setup an account/address where any incoming emails are sent all people in this group (so like a distribution list) but they also want to send emails from this address to invite external guest speakers into school. Not used Shared mailboxes before - so no idea if if this is the way to do or a different way. How would other people do this? Cheers

Thank you - will have a proper look when I’m back in on Thursday :-)

We currently have an on premise server running our noticeboard and intranet page (very kindly given from another edugeek user - sorry I've forgotten who...... but massive thank you - has gone down extremely well) Anyway.... as we move things online, I have been asked to create a staff only area and since I am moving the staff central document to SharePoint, I thought, why not use that. So....... Whats the best way to do the following. Staff need to be able to enter create the notice, select an end date for notice and then post. When then notice end date has arrived, it disappears...... Is this possible or am I only wishful thinking? Cheers

Freehdesk for Helpdesk after moving from On Premise Manageengine. Parago for asset management (was using SnipeIT) but auditors recommended switch to a system that covered the whole site and not just IT. Parago seemed to fit and offered areas to put financial details to generate valuation reports etc to cover depreciation costs and an area to upload invoices and warranty informations.

Smoothwall - Legacy warnings and Major Headache
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Sorry - think I am getting confused and possibly being a little thick - hectic morning and little coffee. I have Radius Accounting in my Auth Directories - If Radius Accounting is being removed - how will Smoothwall know how to assign the correct filtering to users/groups? Do I not actually need Radius Accounting in my Auth Directories? -
Smoothwall - Legacy warnings and Major Headache
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I'm using a Windows NPS as a Radius Server as I can use AD groups to allow/disallow Wifi Access, plus with NPS I can dynamically assigned VLANs to separate Staff and Student devices. As the NPS box authenticates users, the user account information is then passed onto Smoothwall via Radius Accounting so I can assign levels of filtering etc. Is that the correct way of doing things? Or is there an easier way of using a NPS box with smoothwall? As far as I know, Smoothwall BYOD offering doesn't offer the same features as NPS such as AD Permissions and Dynamic VLAN assignments. Cheers -
Smoothwall - Legacy warnings and Major Headache
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
That sorted the Legacy Auth Methods Just need to work out how to get around the Radius Account bit now. -
Needed to update our Smoothwall CA as it was due to expire in 11 days - so done that and still getting the annoying red bar! - Go away!! Anyway..... back to my question, went to look at updates and it is telling me I am using Legacy Auth Methods and Legacy Directories - fair enough, but what does this mean....... Well I have Active Directory - in Directories enabled, but since I am now using IDEX on domain joined devices, I can disable Active Directory..... so all good on that part but Wifi connected devices is going to be a major issue. What the warning actually mean is that my Wifi/BYOD setup will no longer be supported by smoothwall. Problem 1 ====== I currently have our Unifi Wifi setup using NPS for authentication and then depending on AD Group, they are dynamically assigned to the relevant VLAN. NPS server then passes Radius accounting information to Smoothwall, so they can been assigned the correct filtering - but here is the first problem - Radius Accounting is now a legacy Auth Method. Problem 2 ====== Guest Wifi uses HotSpot, single use codes - which when connected is assigned to the guest Wifi IP Range. Becuase Codes are used, no authentication takes place, so on Smoothwall, I have Identification by Location enabled, and Student Filtering applied. - dentification by Location is now a legacy Auth Method. So does this mean I now have to use Smoothwalls BYOD function - which doesn't support Dynamic VLANs What are other people who use Unifi Wifi doing? Cheers

I and trying and failing to get my 20H2 and 21H2 stations to install the 22H2 enablement package via SCCM. I’ve followed this guide - http:// https://www.prajwaldesai.com/windows-10-22h2-upgrade-sccm-feature-update/ But they are updating. Anyone any idea what I will be doing wrong or where to look for possible reasons as to why not deploying. Cheers
