I got the camera out the other day - this chap was waiting for me on my bin near the front door. Made me jump it did....

Thanks for that ( already knew the limits ) - but still wondering why it states you have 5 licenses. Very odd, and not clear at all - my concern is that if I stick ESXi on a load more servers ( for example - 15 ) - am I then breaking some license agreement.
-
I've having a real problem interpreting the actual T & Cs on the ESXi license. I have a key which states I can apply to 5 hosts. Great - I've applied it to 3 so far. What is there to stop me applying it to more than 5 ( as I can't see within my profile this number going down ) and also as this is a free product surly I can simply keep using it. I would appreciate if anyone has an actual understanding of the ESXi license ( in regards to deploying it ) Quote: This license key can be deployed on an unlimited number of physical hosts, but is restricted to deployment on less than or equal to 1 Physical Servers. Does this mean you can't install it on a host host ? ( I.E. - install it on a server, and then create another install on that server ? )

Can someone give me an idea on costs ?

I'm looking at putting in a small managed wireless option for a few our our offices. When I was working in a school ( 4 years ago almost ) I once did a Aruba setup with lots of help but I've been hearing quite a bit on the Ruckas systems. Has anyone implemented one of these and if so - how easy was it. I'm only looking at 3 / 4 Access points max.

We are HP all the way I'm afraid.
-
Could do but I've been using FreeNas since the early days and know it pretty well - for a simple file backup I think that will be ok.
-
That would run two servers sitting on ESXi quite nicely I think.
-
That would be nice but I don't think they do those as rack mounts do they ? Sorry, I should have said they will need to be rack mounted but in all honestly what you have stated is certainly food for thought.....

Well hopefully the latest version but if restricted then I don't mind going down a few versions. HP have their own installs for it which I've used in the past. The 32 GB will be fine as its only going to be running 2 servers, perhaps one more if required. It's a small office so grunt ( especially for the DC ) won't really be that required. I basically want to know what I can get away with without causing too much stress on the server :-) The bells and whistles will not be required - they will be just sitting there doing their thang...... :-)

I'm wondering what the lowest spec HP servers some of you have ESXi running on ? I'm looking at possibly a very simple solution of 2 servers, one being the primary running a VM DC and VM file and print server and the other having snap shot backups or replication of the primary for DR - I was also thinking of setting up a VM FreeNAS for basic file backups. DR being my primary goal, the DC and file and print server will only be used by around 10 to 15 users.

Very good post.

I do ( well did ) - Aurora on my Mac as it's easier on the Battery. I will never understand why it drains it so quick using Chrome. Also started to us Aurora on my Win7 but flip to Chrome for when testing page updates I've done and also some aspects of what the developers have updated. IE is great, great for downloading another browser.

Spiceworks - the good, the bad, and the ugly
mattx replied to Tesla's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Been using Spiceworks since the early days when it was really slow. The main problem with it is they keep bolting this and that to it ( its free so they need to make money some how ) and every time they add something else it causes problems. Their support is really really poor. The bog standard reply is update to the next version - which then causes more problems. The memory usage is shocking, as soon as the main process hits 2 gig it either just dies, or just hangs - check out the production log and you will see a Fatal Memory problem. I've asked countless times what certain parts of the production log mean whilst trying to troubleshoot and they never give a proper reply. Ver 6 was good, Ver 7 is terrible - the new GUI stinks and you can't display as much info ( tickets ) on one page as you could in the old layout + you have to click more just to view ticket details. How they state that this is an improvement is laughable. Luckily you can revert back to the old gui. If you want it stable and quick then just turn off all the bells and whistles and concentrate on the helpdesk. There are some excellent plugins, and you can use auto ticket allocation, auto response, tickets anywhere ( control tickets via E-mail commands ) and there is a app for both Apple and Android. These are the good elements. The scanning side is good but to get it to work without interruptions we are now installing versions on all our remote servers ( 24 subnets too look after where I work ) and I will either try and merge the collected data into a DB or leave them as is - having a central point and the agents running even once a day on each subnet causes problems for us. And I suggest you have it ignoring any scanning of firewalls, they don't like it. So there are good sides ( helpdesk ) and there are bad sides ( badly written, terrible support - buy hey its free ) - I'm not an expert but I've nursed our setup over the last few years now - I've moved it to new servers, I've linked servers, I know how to knock it over very easily - something which I highlighted to them but they have said 'Ooooo, that shouldn't happen' and that was it !! It's an interesting business model the company runs, but I don't like the forced updates and the constant add ons which just generate more issues. I could talk for quite a while on Spiceworks but will only bore the pants of everyone...... Who said 1000 tickets ? << cough :-) >> See attached screen shot.- 29 replies

Jesus phone - perhaps, they still nark me though that you can't have widgets ( I think ) - and the widgets on my Samsung are just so handy. Not a big fan of fondle slabs ( any of them ) - I got a load of the HP Touchpads when they were $60 each and stuck Android on them. I use them to watch films on when flying.

Did you know you can get purple cases for them ? Redirect Notice

Oh gawd I need help now - I'm seriously thinking about the Mac Book Air now too. That I can take around with me and the Pro can stay at home just for my photo work etc.....
-
15" actually :-)
-
That will only happen if I end up using it for everything..... :-)
-
I did consider doing that but I have a quite good spec Windows 7 laptop for work that I can use however, I've just got the open vpn client working on the mac..... only issue is dns as its not part of the domain and I don't really want to add it - I may just make the Win7 VM part of the domain instead.
-
Don't worry, there are some elements of it I still find frustrating !!
-
I have it on my Windows 7 box but it's easier on my new shiny mac !! The retina display is amazing. I love the keyboard, I love the weight, I will install Win7 as a VM for work purposes only. With 16 GB ram and a 250 SSD I will have more than enough room on it.

I agree, but at the moment my tennis elbow is playing up.

Mainly the screen and Photoshop :-)
